Fletcher shows all-round talent

Luke Fletcher ensured Nottinghamshire leaders achieved a considerably more substantial total than appeared likely for much of the opening day

ScorecardLuke Fletcher revived Nottinghamshire’s with an aggressive 92 at The Rose Bowl•Getty ImagesLuke Fletcher, a 20-year-old from the Midlands unrelated to his distinguished namesakes Keith and Duncan but evidently an all rounder of marked talent, ensured that the Division One leaders achieved a considerably more substantial total than appeared likely for much of the opening day. His innings of 92, notable for three belted sixes, any number of other hearty shots and two chances offered from horrible, swirling skiers, enabled Nottinghamshire to reach 305 for eight.Fletcher, from Nottingham, is six foot six inches tall and hence towers over Mark Ealham, his partner in an eighth wicket stand of 152. Nottinghamshire, who won the toss on a pitch of no great pace, had collapsed to 147 for seven chiefly through some aggressive bowling by David Griffiths, who has been performance well in Hampshire’s second X1, and Sean Ervine. Only Samit Patel, discarded by England but still a forceful, at times imperious batsman, had made a score of note, 41, although he, too, had been dropped – Nic Pothas missing a difficult chance when he had still to score.Apart from these significant errors – Fletcher was dropped on 27 and 56 by Michael Lumb and Jimmy Adams – Hampshire, badly beaten by Durham in their last match, held some decent catches. Will Jefferson, slashing wildly at Ervine, was well caught right handed by Pothas, who also took a low chance offered by Patel off James Tomlinson. No-one bowled more capably than Imran Tahir, who had Adam Voges leg before, sweeping, and could well have had two leg before appeals go in his favour besides. Then came Fletcher, who also bowls medium pace and whose previous highest score in four first-class matches was a mere eight not out. Soon, in the words of Peter Walker, the ECB pitch inspector who had driven to the Rose Bowl from Padstow in Cornwall, where he gave the address at Brian Edrich’s funeral, he was batting “like Wally Hammond.” His half century, off 62 balls, included four fours and three sixes, whereas Ealham was more circumspect, reaching that milestone off 94 balls with seven fours and a six pulled severely off Dominic Cork, whose length left something to be desired.Tahir, whose deception came through use of his top-spinner rather than making his leg break or googly turn on this bland surface, was twice warned by umpire Rob Bailey for running down the pitch and duly switched to the pavilion end for a while. Still, though, he was treated with disrespect by Fletcher, who both slog-swept and pulled him with an easy pick-up. No wonder he is in Nottinghamshire’s side on merit. “I have not seen him bat better than this and he has been our best bowler in our last two championship matches,” said Mick Newell, their coach. It was a question in the closing overs of whether Fletcher would curb his natural attacking intentions, for his maiden century was but a few runs distant. In the circumstances it would have been folly to have done so, for the field was spread and the bowling by now uninspired.Hampshire, captained by Pothas in Dimitri Mascarenhas’ absence, turned to Jimmy Adams’ gentle medium pace in an attempt to break an increasingly lengthy partnership, but it was Tahir who did so, bowling Fletcher with a quicker ball. His 92 came off 122 balls and included nine fours and three sixes.

LFC fans fume at Robertson performance

A number of Liverpool supporters have criticised Andy Robertson’s below-par showing in the Reds’ disappointing 3-3 draw at Brentford.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had a chance to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday following defeats for Chelsea and Manchester United earlier in the day.

Instead, they produced a sloppy display against a spirited Brentford side, giving away two leads and only leaving west London with a point.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

It was a game which saw too many Reds players underperform, with the defence all over the place for much of proceedings.

Robertson was arguably as bad as anyone, struggling in all facets of his game and losing the ball 18 times over the 90 minutes, the third most of any Liverpool player. He lost 50% of his duels and succeeded with just two of his seven crosses whilst also being dribbled past twice (SofaScore).

Leeds: Illan Meslier’s price has soared

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has been lauded for his ability to coach and improve players throughout his career in the game.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola called him the best coach ‘in the world’ and revealed the respect he has for the Leeds man.

His coaching has been clear for all to see at Elland Road, taking the club from being in the Championship to competing in the Premier League, and he has improved several players along the way. One player he has helped progress at Leeds is goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman joined the club on loan at the start of the 2019/20 Championship season as Bielsa looked to bring in a back-up to Kiko Casilla. He ended up playing ten matches in the division that year as the Whites claimed the second-tier crown, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding four goals in that time.

Leeds then signed him on a permanent deal from Lorient in the summer of 2020 and Transfermarkt valued him at £4.05m. Bielsa made Meslier his number one and put his faith in the youngster for the 2020/21 Premier League campaign and it paid off as kept 11 clean sheets in 35 outings as the club avoided relegation back down to the second-tier.

The 21-year-old’s form in the top-flight led to journalist Phil Hay lauding the Frenchman and claiming that he has ‘vast’ potential as a shot-stopper. He said on his podcast, via This is Futbol:

“It was ridiculous [a save from Maja] and he’s pulled off quite a few like that, which I think is the sort of thing that marks him out as massive goalkeeping talent.

“He’s so young that there are parts of his game which are going to have to improve, aerially particularly, I think that’s quite apparent to everybody, but he is only 21.

“That is a young age for a footballer, generally, but a very, very young age for a goalkeeper – the potential in him is vast.”

At the time of writing (04/10/21), Transfemarkt value Meslier at £18m. This is a whopping 344% increase in one year of football for Meslier. This shows how much progress he has made during his time in England and proves that Bielsa was right to ditch Casilla and go with him as his first-choice goalkeeper.

It has been a coaching masterclass from Bielsa, which is proven by Meslier’s exponential increase in value under his management. Hopefully, the Argentine coach will be able to continue improving the French youth international further as Leeds attempt to climb the Premier League table.

Airline protesters interrupt Test

The final day of the first Ashes Test at Cardiff was interrupted by a pitch invasion involving two protesters campaigning against the recruitment policies of a discount airline

Alex Brown12-Jul-2009The final day of the first Ashes Test at Cardiff was interrupted by a pitch invasion involving two protesters campaigning against the recruitment policies of a discount airline. John Foley and Anthony Lea stormed the field during the 51st over, brandishing a banner decrying the Michael O’Leary-owned Ryanair for supposedly charging would-be recruits for training, only to terminate their contracts thereafter.Foley halted play for several minutes while he was wrestled to the ground by four security guards, while Lea broke the stumps at Cathedral Road End before he too was subdued. Speaking after his ejection from Sophia Gardens, Foley, 43, said the protest had been planned the previous evening after Ryanair terminated the employment contract of his daughter. The protest was slightly less eventful than that which occured during the Headingley Test of 1975, where vandals forced the abandonment of the third Ashes Test by digging up the pitch prior to the fifth day’s play. On that occasion, the protesters were campaigning for the release of George Davis, a 34-year-old mini-cab driver who had been sentenced to a 20-year sentence for armed robbery.

Tanvir looks to regain form with Surrey stint

Sohail Tanvir has said he has spent his time out of the side “overcoming his problems” and is now set for a stint with Surrey

Cricinfo staff27-Jul-2009Sohail Tanvir, the Pakistan left-arm fast bowler who was dropped for the series in Sri Lanka after a poor World Twenty20, has said he has spent his time out of the side “overcoming his problems” and is now set for a stint with Surrey. While Surrey have not confirmed the news and are still in talks with several players, Tanvir said he had signed a contract with the county and was waiting for his work permit to be sorted before leaving for the UK. “Since I am not a part of the Pakistan team at the moment therefore this stint with Surrey would provide me with good practice,” Tanvir told the Pakistan television channel . Tanvir hoped the stint would help him get back into the Pakistan side.”I am aware that I am not bowling to the best of my ability, but I am confident that the loss of form is temporary and bowling at The Oval will give me my confidence and form back,” Tanvir was quoted as saying by However the entry of the 17-year-old Mohammad Aamer into the Pakistan side has put Tanvir’s return in doubt. Aamer, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka, had a match haul of 6 for 112 in the first Test before going wicketless in the next two. But he is set to play the one-day series starting on Thursday.Tanvir has welcomed the competition. “The healthy competition would enhance the performance level which will ultimately benefit Pakistan and whoever performs well should play for Pakistan.”

Everton: Fans react to Luis Diaz skill

Reported Everton target Luis Diaz pulled off an ‘outrageous’ piece of skill during Colombia’s World Cup qualifying clash with Brazil on Sunday.

Diaz was under challenge from Marquinhos and Fred and shuffled the ball from his right foot onto his left, which he used to dink it between the two players.

The game would end up finishing 0-0, with FC Porto’s Diaz playing the full 90 minutes.

He was otherwise marshalled pretty effectively, winning only two of his nine ground duels (via SofaScore).

Diaz could have been a Blue

Everton tried to sign Diaz in the final knockings of the transfer window as part of a deal that would have seen James Rodriguez go the other way. Ultimately, James’ salary was an insurmountable hurdle (via Carlos Aleman).

It remains to be seen whether the Blues revisit their interest in subsequent windows. Manager Rafael Benitez ‘clearly wanted more options out wide’.

Portuguese football feed Proxima Jornada posted the footage, and here’s what Everton supporters had to say.

Mendis secures another Singapore win

Buddhika Mendis stroked an unbeaten century to steer Singapore to their third win in a row in the ICC World Cricket League Division 6

Cricinfo staff01-Sep-2009Buddhika Mendis stroked an unbeaten century to steer Singapore to their third win in a row in the ICC World Cricket League Division 6, when they beat Bahrain by seven wickets on a rain-affected day on Tuesday.Play began at all the three venues but heavy rain set in around midday and only Singapore and Bahrain were able to finish their fixture at the Padang ground, while matches at the Kalang and the Indian Association ground were washed out.Batting first, Bahrain were 122 for 4 after 34 overs when the rain came down hard to stop any further play until 4pm. And when the match resumed, Singapore were set a revised target of 164 in 34 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.Singapore successfully knocked off the runs in 30.4 overs, losing only three wickets, and Mendis starred with an unbeaten 103. His innings was all the more impressive considering he had to bat with a runner for the major part of his innings after he had suffered an injury to his right leg.”I’m extremely happy with today’s result. We didn’t start well with our batting but then Mendis came in and played extremely well,” said Trevor Chappell, the Singapore coach. “He was helped earlier in the innings by Anish Param and later by Monish Arora. Arora and Mendis took us through to the end and I’m pleased with the team. We’re just going to have to wait and see how Mendis’ injury goes tonight, ahead of tomorrow’s match against Norway.”At the two abandoned matches, Guernsey were 184 for 2 in 35.2 overs against Norway before downpour prevented any further play at the Indian Association ground while Botswana reached 144 for 4 against Malaysia at the Kalang when play was called off.Tuesday’s abandoned matches will now be played on Thursday, the next designated reserve day. Guernsey will face Norway at the Indian Association ground and Botswana will play Malaysia at the Kalang.Wednesday’s fixtures will remain as scheduled. Norway will play Singapore at the Kalang, Bahrain will play Botswana at the Singapore Cricket Club and Guernsey will take on Malaysia at the Indian Association ground.

Pundit criticises Leeds star Rodrigo

Leeds United made a big mistake signing Rodrigo for a club-record fee in 2020, according to former top flight striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Rodrigo struggles at Leeds

The Spaniard joined Leeds for £27million last year, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history in the process.

While there were high hopes for Rodrigo when he arrived, he is yet to meet those expectations, scoring just eight goals in 38 appearances after Saturday’s dramatic late penalty.

This season, the 30-year-old has registered just that one goal and no assists in eight Premier League starts.

The Latest: Agbonlahor critical of signing

Someone who isn’t impressed by what he has seen is Agbonlahor, 35, who told Football Insider that Rodrigo is ultimately proving to be a huge waste of money, when asked the question:

“I think so. He shows some good touches and stuff but you need to score goals. If you don’t score goals there’s no point being in the team.

“You don’t want him to just be a hard worker who can press without getting the goals.

“I think Leeds need to get to January and try to get reinforcements. Bielsa doesn’t look like he’s doing the job he was doing last season.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-21/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Potential flop

There is still time for Rodrigo to come good at Leeds and Saturday’s delightfully cool spot-kick is a start, but with each passing week, it does appear as though he will never live up to his billing.

While there have been sporadic moments of quality from the former Valencia man – a double at Burnley last season, for example – a lack of consistency has been on show far too often.

Marcelo Bielsa has needed Rodrigo to step up in the absence of injured star man Patrick Bamford in attack and he quite simply hasn’t.

All that said, perhaps Saturday’s equaliser can turn things in the right direction.

Noor century secures draw

Noor Ali compiled his second hundred of the match as Afghanistan secured a draw against Zimbabwe XI in Mutare

Cricinfo staff19-Aug-2009
Scorecard
Noor Ali compiled his second hundred of the match as Afghanistan secured a draw against Zimbabwe XI in Mutare. Noor joined an exclusive list of players who’ve scored a century in each innings of a first-class debut – Arthur Morris, Nari Contractor and Aamir Malik are three others who’ve achieved the feat. Set an improbable 374 to win, Afghanistan ended on 211 for 4 and took first-innings points.Earlier, after resuming on 267 for 6 Zimbabwe pushed their total to 446 for 9, thanks to No. 8 Trevor Garwe’s brisk century. Forster Mutizwa failed to add his overnight score of 56, which left plenty of responsibility on Garwe’s shoulders. He found solid support from the tail, adding 83 for the eighth wicket and 94 for the ninth. Garwe was aggressive during his 122-ball knock, smashing 13 fours and four sixes. Once he was dismissed for 117, Tatenda Taibu declared. The hosts couldn’t get the early breakthroughs as the openers motored along in a stand of 103. Noor was unbeaten on 100 by the 45th over, when the captains called off the game. Noor struck 15 fours and a six on his knock, which came off 134 balls.

Newcastle lining up Lacazette swoop

An update has emerged on Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sunday People (24/10, pg 54), via Geordie Boot Boys, the Magpies are interested in a deal to sign the French forward.

The report claims that he could be available as Arsenal have been offering him out to clubs across Europe in hope of finding a buyer.

Imagine him & Wilson

PIF must secure a January deal for Lacazette as they could seal a deadly strike force for the manager they pick to replace Steve Bruce. With Callum Wilson already at the club, bringing the Arsenal forward in could help to create a terrifying front two capable of scoring the goals to fire Newcastle up the table.

Wilson has been in sensational form since joining from Bournemouth last summer. He has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 28 Premier League starts, which means that he has averaged a goal contribution every 1.33 starts.

Lacazette, meanwhile, scored 51 goals and provided 23 assists in 132 Premier League matches for Arsenal, starting 98 of those matches. This means that he has been directly involved in a goal every 1.32 starts in the top-flight, which is a terrific record for the attacker and shows that he and Wilson could strike fear into opposition defenders in a front two.

When Asked about Lacazette’s future recently, Mikel Arteta hailed his character and refused to rule out an exit in January. He said:

“We discuss that internally, we discuss that with him. It’s a long season ahead of us anything can happen everything is open. He just needs to focus on performing and contributing to the team like he always does.

“He’s a phenomenal character, he’s somebody that’s always pushing and he has a real interest to help the team. That’s not going to change. After we will see what happens.”

This suggests that the dynamo has the right mentality to come in at Newcastle and give the rest of the team a lift, as he wants to help the side overall rather than focus on himself.

Therefore, a partnership with Wilson could be a dream scenario for Newcastle, as both players have sensational records at Premier League level and could work well in a pair, given Lacazette’s unselfishness and willingness to work for the team.
