Arteta pulls U-turn over Arsenal star with Edu ready to open new deal talks

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has seemingly pulled a U-turn on his stance, with Edu Gaspar and co now ready to open talks over fresh terms for one member of the squad who’s been heavily linked with an exit.

Arsenal prepare to face Southampton after 2-0 win over PSG

The north Londoners maintained their unbeaten start to 2024/2025 against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain this week, beating Luis Enrique’s side 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Kai Havertz – who leapt highest to nod home a cross from Leandro Trossard – gave them the lead before a free kick from star winger Bukayo Saka ensured Arsenal’s win against a PSG side who had next to no answers for Arteta’s resolute midfield and backline.

The French heavyweights struggled to unlock Arsenal time and time again, with any real threat coming courtesy of the home side. Havertz threatened to make it 3-0 and really should have, but the forward’s tame free header did little to trouble PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Nevertheless, Arteta will be very pleased with how his side managed the game overall against star-studded opposition. Attention now turns to Southampton, a Premier League match-up which Arsenal really should have no trouble winning on paper.

Thomas Partey is highly likely to start the encounter and make it his seventh nod from Arteta in the top flight this season, with his return to the fold being nothing short of remarkable.

Partey won every single one of his duels against PSG during an imperious midfield display, becoming a mainstay in Arteta’s starting eleven once again after making just 14 Premier League appearances in total last season.

The Ghanaian’s future is still up in the air, though, given his contract expires next summer. Partey was attracting interest from Saudi Arabia in the summer, and Edu will be very thankful that he decided not to part ways with the 31-year-old considering his newly stellar partnership with Declan Rice in the middle.

Despite his excellent form, the consensus has been that Partey is set to leave Arsenal next summer once his deal expires, with Arteta deciding not to extend his contract. However, according to The Boot Room today, this has now changed.

Arsenal now ready to open new contract talks with Partey

Indeed, following an excellent start to 2024/2025, Arsenal are ready to open new contract talks with Partey and are keen to keep him at the club.

The African’s preference is also to remain at the Emirates Stadium, with both the player and Arsenal deciding a move to Saudi Arabia wasn’t the best option during the summer window.

The proposed new terms, if agreed, would be for a further two years. It is added that Arteta and his coaching staff are massive admirers of the former Atletico Madrid ace, who was forced to sit out a lot last season partly due to reoccurring fitness issues.

Arteta hasn’t exactly hid his admiration for Partey over the last two seasons, calling the £200,000-per-week star a “really important” member of the team.

Jofra Archer 'nervous' after Bresnan conversation but eyes West Indies comeback

Fast bowler reiterates commitment to Test cricket despite recurrence of elbow injury

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Aug-2021Jofra Archer has admitted that a conversation with Tim Bresnan about his elbow injury made him feel nervous but he remains hopeful of a comeback in England’s Test series in the Caribbean in March 2022.Bresnan, the seam-bowling allrounder who was part of the England side that went to No. 1 in the ICC’s Test rankings in 2011, has suffered with elbow injuries throughout his career, undergoing surgery three times and struggling to regain his pace afterwards.Archer, writing in his column, said that the pair had spoken recently about their respective experiences.”Tim Bresnan had a similar problem, and we spoke about the issue which made me a bit nervous, I must admit,” he said. “But I’m sure it will be fine in the long run, and I’m grateful that the injury doesn’t stop me going about my daily business. It’s not as if I’m limping around, or anything like that.”When I got the news that I’d be out for the rest of 2021 because I had suffered another stress fracture in my elbow, it was pretty tough to take. But I’ve always been of the view that everything happens for a reason, and the injury doesn’t change the way I look at my career.”Archer also insisted that he remains focused on resuming his Test career, rather than specialising in white-ball cricket.Related

Archer ruled out for the rest of 2021 after recurrence of elbow fracture

“I’ve said many times before that Test cricket is the most important format to me and nothing has changed in that respect,” he said. “It’s frustrating to be sitting out an important series against India, as well as not being to make the trip to Australia this winter – not to mention the Twenty20 World Cup in the UAE.”If I do end up with another stress fracture, I may have a different view on things as regards to my future. But for the moment, I’m still only 26 and I think my best years as a Test cricketer are ahead of me.”Archer was officially ruled out “for the rest of the year” by the ECB at the start of August, following scans which revealed the recurrence of his stress fracture, but he suggested that he was unlikely to play any cricket until England’s three-Test series against West Indies from March 8-28.”I don’t want this thing hanging over me. I want to be out there again, taking wickets and helping win games for England,” he said. “Having said that, I’m trying to be cautious about when I make my comeback, but I guess there’s a chance I’ll be ready in time for England’s three-Test series against West Indies in the Caribbean in March.”But I can’t make any promises, and I’ll be seeing a specialist soon about the elbow.”

Liverpool wasted £25m on Klopp signing who earned far more than Diaz

Liverpool haven’t exactly got the easiest run of fixtures on their return from the international break, with tricky tests in the Premier League and the Champions League coming up.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal stand in the way of Arne Slot’s men when top-flight action kicks back into gear, whilst an away trip to RB Leipzig then awaits his confident group away from league action, who are two wins from two in the prestigious competition.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot-1

It will be intriguing to see if the Dutchman brings Luis Diaz back into his XI for the home clash with Enzo Maresca’s Blues, with the Colombian attacker on the substitutes bench for the majority of his side’s slender 1-0 away win at Crystal Palace last time out.

Diaz's form this season

Slot had the luxury of dropping Diaz knowing that Oliver Glasner’s Eagles were languishing near the foot of the league, with Cody Gakpo then stealing the headlines with an assist for Diogo Jota’s winner in place of the Reds number seven.

Luis Diaz celebrates

Still, Chelsea will be a far harder match for his table-topping side so Diaz could be thrown back into the mix, having been in electric form this season in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has five goals and one assist next to his name from seven clashes in the league, undoubtedly helping his side pick up six wins from seven games to sit at the very top of the tree as a result.

Two of those strikes came away at Manchester United at the start of last month, as Slot’s flashy away side showed no mercy at Old Trafford in a comprehensive 3-0 demolition job, making the likes of Casemiro look like a school boy with some of his errors on the day.

Whilst Liverpool’s decision to bring Diaz into the building in 2022 continues to pay off, the Reds haven’t always struck gold in the transfer market in the attacking positions, with one purchase in 2018 going down as a notable misfire despite his cult hero status among some.

Shaqiri's time at Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri was arguably a perplexing buy when he arrived through the door at Anfield five years ago. Indeed, Liverpool swooped in for the Swiss attacker’s services after Stoke City fell down to the Championship despite with Gary Neville describing the winger as “unprofessional”.

The Reds picked him up for a fee of £13m, hopeful that he could prove to be a shrewd capture, with the 5 foot 7 menace showing off his class on the books of Bayern Munich and FC Basel.

Away from a bright first campaign that saw Shaqiri’s exploits help Klopp’s side lift the Champions League, injury issues then began to trouble him which saw his minutes significantly dry up.

Only managing to make 33 appearances across his final two campaigns, the Swiss winger just couldn’t justify his hefty pay packet playing for the Reds, which saw him rake in £80k-per-week and £4.1m-per-year across his three-season stretch at the club, according to Capology.

Diaz only earns a lesser £55k-per-week in contrast, with the Colombian forward perhaps edging closer to a wage increase down the line if he keeps up his stellar easy season form for Slot’s men.

Taking into account Shaqiri’s £13m transfer fee, on top of his yearly wages, the ex-Bayern man would cost the Reds a sizeable chunk overall at £25m.

Whilst Diaz aims to continue firing on all cylinders, Shaqiri now finds himself back in his native Switzerland playing for Basel, as the 33-year-old begins to contemplate the end point of his playing days.

He did have some moments of magic in a Reds strip, with this strike against Man United in 2018 late on a fond memory Liverpool fans will still latch onto, but he did end up costing the Premier League club lots of money that could have better spent elsewhere.

The Dutch coach is having a dream outing in his maiden season at Anfield. Liverpool lead the Premier League table by six points and also have a game in hand over both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. They have also qualified for the Champions League knockout stage, having won all of their group-stage matches. Despite the Reds' dream run in the 2024-25 campaign, Slot claimed that his father has been his team's biggest critic and also revealed that he did not approve of the way the Merseyside club played in their win over Lille in the midweek in Champions League.

Speaking to , the Reds boss said: "That is difficult for fans, and my father is a fan as well. When I call him after a game he says, ‘Ah, it wasn’t as exciting as other games of Liverpool’ [and that happened] when he watched the game against Lille. I had to try to explain to him you can easily lose these games if you are starting to force all kinds of difficult balls, but he’s not always agreeing with me then.

"There have definitely not been many [Liverpool] games where he has said: ‘Oh! I like what I saw!’. I think his favourite games would be one of the ones in which we had a comfortable lead far before the end, because he is always a bit nervous. Every game for us is tight, so I think [his favourite] would be West Ham away [when Liverpool won 5-0] or Tottenham away [when they won 6-3]."

The 46-year-old also revealed which Liverpool performances in the current season have impressed his father, as he added: "But since he was in the stadium against [Manchester] City and Real Madrid, I think if you were to ask him now he would tell you those were his most special moments because he was there with my mum as well.

“He might even know your names. I think he reads everything that is written! He is an ambassador for his amateur club and they play in Holland at a similar time to us. He has a lot of troubles, so the first half he goes there and then goes home really fast so he can see our game. He is following everything like most dads do. The funny thing is he was always quite critical [when I was playing] so when my son is playing I am like: ‘Oh! Well done! Well done!’ I think maybe my son will go to being critical again."

Erratic Royals seek valuable points as race for playoffs heats up

Royal Challengers Bangalore meanwhile will be hoping to find their best combination and firm up their position in the top four

Nikhil Kalro28-Sep-2021 Big picture Despite being a league that boasts some of the best players in the world, no team in the IPL is immune from injuries or unavailability concerns. That has been the case for Rajasthan Royals, who have struggled for momentum in the UAE leg of the tournament in the absence of Jos Buttler, Andrew Tye and Jofra Archer. In the one match they’ve won out of three, they were helped by a stellar final over from Kartik Tyagi and nervy batting from Punjab Kings.Royal Challengers Bangalore have been similarly erratic in this leg of the competition. After a nine-wicket thrashing at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi, Royal Challengers simply did not match up well against Chennai Super Kings at Sharjah, failing to first properly counter spin while batting and then unable to use their slower bowlers to contain Super Kings’ batters.Related

Glenn Maxwell's reverse-handed dominance makes the difference

Harshal Patel hat-trick caps comprehensive Royal Challengers Bangalore win

Samson needs support as Royals battle to stay in the playoff race

Promisingly, from a playoffs standpoint, Royal Challengers fixed those errors as quickly as two days later. Glenn Maxwell scored a match-winning 56 off 37 balls, using either switch or reverse shots to put Mumbai’s bowlers off their rhythm. Defending 165, the slower bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal, Maxwell and Harshal Patel combined to take nine wickets to spark an atypical Mumbai collapse. While Royal Challengers are well placed to make the playoffs, Royals are in a scrappy fight with three other teams for the final fourth spot. Their season could simply come down to whether they are able to adapt to changes quicker than their opponents. In the news Royals have continued to tinker with their overseas combination. In addition to the absence of Buttler and Stokes, Royals haven’t helped themselves by playing batters out of position. Liam Livingstone has batted at No. 4 in two of the three matches in the second half of this tournament. Most of his success, for Lancashire and England, has come while opening. Considering he has scored just 30 runs in three matches, it might make sense to either stick with him as an opener or bring in a specialist middle-order batter, like David Miller.Royal Challengers don’t have too many personnel concerns apart from finding their best combination.Watch IPL on ESPN+ (US only)

Srikar Bharat will usually come in at the fall of an early wicket or much later in the lower-middle order should the openers bat past the powerplay. His introduction at No. 3 results in AB de Villiers pushed to No. 5 and, as was the case against Mumbai, Daniel Christian to No. 6. While that worked in the India leg of this tournament, it has not in the UAE. In terms of optimising T20 batters of the ilk of de Villiers, Maxwell and Christian, Royal Challengers might want to be proactive and find their best positions.Harshal Patel has taken 23 wickets, the highest this IPL season. He has developed and mastered a slower ball that dips late, his most effective weapon this season. Of his 23 wickets, 15 have been taken with a slower ball. Seven of his 23 wickets have been taken while bowling a slower ball in the slot (between 2 meters and 6 meters from the stumps), which equates to one wicket every five deliveries. His economy rate is 6.8 while bowling a slower ball and 10.2 while using his stock ball. To counter that, Rajasthan could consider his slower ball as his stock ball and play for the dipping variation instead of his quicker-paced delivery. That will, in turn, negate Harshal’s most efficient delivery and force him away from his strength, just like Ravindra Jadeja did in Mumbai earlier this season. Stats that matter Glenn Maxwell needs 18 more runs to complete 7000 T20 runs. Sanju Samson has been dismissed once every 38.1 balls this season, the second highest balls per dismissal after KL Rahul’s 42.4. AB de Villiers has taken Chris Morris for 86 runs in 44 balls in T20s at a strike rate of 195.4 and a boundary percentage of 72.1.

David Warner turns to concrete pitches for batting rhythm

Laughs off talk of poor form and believes he is close to being at his best

Andrew McGlashan27-Oct-2021David Warner has laughed off talk about poor form and believes he is close to finding his best touch, having swapped the practice nets in the UAE for synthetic and concrete surfaces.Warner, who has played five innings in all cricket since April with scores of 0, 2, 0, 1 and 14, revealed the training tactic – something he has previously used at home – was an attempt to overcome nets which are showing the effects of a lot of traffic over the last few months and, he believes, risk bringing bad habits into his batting. He spoke with the Australian coaching staff on tour about making use of the different surfaces, which are available in Dubai, having received a text from batting coach Trent Woodhill who is a long-time mentor. Warner has had balls hurled at him with the ‘wanger’, or dog-thrower, at up to 145kph so that he can get his feet “dancing” ahead of facing a Sri Lanka attack that possesses considerable pace.”One thing that should be noted is these practice wickets have been up for close to 12 weeks now, so training is quite difficult on them as well,” Warner said. “At the moment I’m training on some synthetic wickets and polished concrete to get timing and rhythm and moving my feet so that’s helping me.”When you are practicing on low wickets that aren’t great it gets you into sticky positions in the games when you are on better wickets. You have to get your brain working again with your feet and hands to get into good positions.”You want to feel bat on ball, but it also makes you move your feet more. We are so used to the ball coming onto the bat and when you do that and are moving, you start dancing in the game. If you are practicing bad habits at training because you aren’t able to get that volume in, you have to go back to the basics.”Warner felt positive signs during his 14 off 15 balls against South Africa which included three crisp boundaries before he drove to backward point. He lamented his lack of conviction in the stroke that brought his downfall, saying he was too focused on seeing out what was Kagiso Rabada’s third over of his opening spell.”In hindsight I should have played it over the top, but I pushed it to backward point,” he said. “My feet were moving, I got into great positions, but my awareness should have been to go with it. Felt I was one boundary away from having a good innings”I actually think people talking about my form is quite funny. I laugh at the matter. I’ve played hardly any cricket. Had two games in the IPL and then warm-up games are warm-up games for a reason. The other day I got my benchmark as where I should be at with my feet.”Warner believes the T20 game is not purely about the volume of runs a batter scores but how they fit into the broader team gameplan. “Individuals have to play their roles. It’s not necessarily a big score, it’s how you get 20, 30 or 40 and then if you get that big score it puts you in a great position. You’ve just got to make sure you aren’t soaking up too many balls.”There is also scrutiny of Warner’s opening partner Aaron Finch, who is another to make use of the concrete wickets, after he returned from knee surgery in this tournament. Finch carved to third man for a duck against South Africa although his overall T20I returns in 2021 are far from poor with 324 runs at 32.40, albeit his strike-rate of 126.56 is his lowest for any calendar year since he made his debut. The opening game was the first time Warner and Finch had opened in a T20I since last September against England. They were a key part of the success Australia had in the format in the 2019-2020 season, but that was followed by Warner’s injury last year against India and subsequent unavailability. “It almost seems like we’ve been in retirement and come back after the time we’ve had off,” he said.

Liverpool plotting move to sign £54m star scouts just saw score four goals

Planning ahead to 2025, Michael Edwards now reportedly wants Liverpool to sign an attacking reinforcement who just put on a four-goal show for his on-watching scouts.

Liverpool transfer news

Whilst Liverpool were one of the quietest clubs in the summer transfer window – only signing Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa – they could yet spring into action when 2025 arrives. The Reds have already been linked with moves for the likes of Orkun Kokcu and Alvaro Carreras as they look to finish their midfield rebuild and welcome a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson. And the rumours are only likely to increase as the months tick by.

Forget Trent: Liverpool have another £100m star in the making

Liverpool could soon have a real superstar on their hands under Arne Slot

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 17, 2024

Carreras would be a particularly interesting arrival, given how he graduated from Real Madrid’s academy before completing a move to Manchester United of all sides. Now plying his trade in Portugal for Benfica, the young left-back has emerged as one to watch.

Meanwhile, Kokcu’s arrival would almost be a reward for Arne’s Slot’s excellent start. The Dutchman worked with the midfielder at Feyenoord with the duo enjoying great success together, but he may not be the only midfielder that arrives.

orkun-kokcu-feyenoord-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-fabregas

According to Caught Offside, Edwards now wants Liverpool to sign Georgiy Sudakov after scouts watched the attacking midfielder score four goals in one game as Shakhtar Donetsk smashed LNZ Cherkasy. Involved in every one of those five goals, having assisted the one effort that he didn’t score, it’s no surprise that Sudakov’s price tag sits as high as €65m (£54m).

Liverpool aren’t the only side interested either, with Arsenal also battling to sign the Ukraine star in what would add crucial depth to their attacking midfield role alongside Martin Odegaard. The Reds will hope that the Gunners don’t get the chance to utilise that depth, however, as they plot to beat their Premier League rivals to Sudakov’s signature.

"Exciting" Sudakov would unleash Nunez

As Darwin Nunez continues to struggle in a Liverpool shirt, it’s difficult not to wonder what an attacking midfielder of Sudakov’s calibre would do for the forward’s Anfield career. A player who has the vision and ability to pick out Nunez’s constant runs – albeit runs he must learn to time right – may just see the Uruguay international finally explode into life under Slot.

The 22-year-old Ukraine international has certainly earned fans around European football, with analyst Ben Mattinson dubbing Sudakov an “exciting attacking midfielder” back in March.

With seven goals and two assists in just 10 games in all competitions so far this season, there’s not many who have started the campaign in more scintillating fashion than Sudakov, who may not reap the rewards for such form in 2025. As Premier League clubs begin to circle, Liverpool should be desperate to win the race for his signature.

Seattle Sounders FC has revealed their new away kit for the 2025 and 2026 MLS seasons, officially dubbed the “The Salish Sea Kit.” The design draws inspiration from the Pacific Northwest’s rich coastal heritage, featuring a color palette and patterns that evoke the region’s maritime culture. Not only that, the Rave Green collaborated with indigenous artists representing the Puyallup, Muckleshoot and Suquamish Native American Tribes in order to bring out the best of the Coast Salish weaving traditions in their away kit.

Not only that, the club, in their statement, revealed that they are set to donate proceeds of up to $50,000 from the first 30 days to preserve the cultural heritage of tribal communities.

“We are proud to present The Salish Sea Kit – a jersey that embodies the Sounders FC spirit and our region’s deep cultural and environmental ties,” said Sounders FC President of Business Operations Hugh Weber. “Collaborating with Connie McCloud, Gail White Eagle and Danielle Morsette, artists and weavers from the Puyallup, Muckleshoot and Suquamish Tribes, has been an extraordinary honor. This kit is more than what we wear on the pitch, it is a testament to partnership, stewardship and our shared responsibility to protect the Salish Sea for generations to come.”

WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR SEATTLE SOUNDERS?

The Sounders finished fourth in the Western Conference at the end of the 2024 season. They then beat Houston Dynamo (on penalties) in Round One of the playoffs and then LAFC in the Conference semifinals to set up a clash against the Galaxy in the Conference finals. However, in a tight fought contest, the Rave Green lost 1-0 to the eventual MLS Cup Champions.

While that did break a few hearts, the Sounders have bounced back well so far through a stellar preseason. The club are currently gearing up for a busy start to their 2025 campaign, balancing their Concacaf Champions Cup Round One tie against Antigua GFC with their MLS season opener against Charlotte FC. The two-legged continental fixture sandwiches the domestic curtain-raiser.
