'Is Unai Emery crazy?' – Ollie Watkins told to 'push for a move' after being snubbed for Marcus Rashford as Aston Villa reveal lineup to face PSG

Despite being Villa's top scorer this season, manager Unai Emery has dropped Watkins to the bench, and Rashford will lead the line for their Champions League quarter-final second leg against PSG on Tuesday night. This hasn't gone down too well with a selection of football fans, with some calling Emery "crazy" and others saying the 29-year-old should move elsewhere.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

@DrFa1ade posed a question on X, saying: "Watkins should have pushed for a move, because how is he not starting?"

@GodBleedsBlue tweeted: "How has Rashford pushed Watkins out? I cannot for the life of me see it."

@ballknowsme commented: "Embarrassing that club legend Ollie Watkins isn’t starting the UCL games he literally got them into himself for some lazy bum on loan."

@sheila_gooner put: "Ollie Watkins' dream is to play for Arsenal. Emery seems to prefer Rashford to him nowadays. What do you think about us making a bid for Ollie?"

And @TrxpleM added: "Has Rashford actually been better than Watkins this season or is Unai just being crazy?"

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Watkins was linked with Arsenal, a team he grew up supporting, in January but Villa rebuffed their interest. If Manchester United loanee Rashford signs permanently for the Villans, Watkins may consider his Villa Park future more intensely in the summer. Either way, Emery will have picked a team he believes stands the best chance of overturning a 3-1 first-leg deficit to the French champions.

Paul Stirling leads Brave cruise after George Garton extinguishes Fire

Garton takes three wickets in first seven balls to leave hosts shellshocked

ECB Reporters Network22-Aug-2022Paul Stirling proved he has lost none of his firepower as he guided Southern Brave to another nine-wicket victory over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens. The Ireland opener won the match award in the inaugural final last year and picked up where he left off, joining Quinton de Kock in a first-wicket run-fest in his first appearance of the season after international duty. He is a replacement for Marcus Stoinis, who has left to play in Australia’s ODI series against Zimbabwe. He notched a record individual score for Brave with an unbeaten knock of 74 off 42 balls and joined de Kock in a season-high partnership of 121 for the first wicket – just three short of the best for any wicket in the Hundred of 124 by D’Arcy Short and Dawid Malan for Trent Rockets against Brave last season. After George Garton had blasted out three top-order Fire batters in his opening seven balls to leave the home side shell-shocked at 1 for 3, the reigning champions restricted their hosts to 129 for 8 from their 100 balls.Related

Despite a 20-minute break for rain when they batted, Brave didn’t hang around in their chase as they condemned Fire to a fifth successive defeat to leave them pointless. Stirling started at breakneck speed with two boundaries off David Payne and Brave were 18 off 10 balls when the teams went off for the rain break. He then punished George Scrimshaw, hitting him for four successive fours when the game resumed. Next up was skipper Josh Cobb, who also went for a duck, and then Ben Duckett fell to a diving catch behind the wicket by de Kock. That reduced the Fire to 1 for 3 and they limped to a record-equaling lowest powerplay total of 17 off 25 balls.Joe Clarke and David Miller dug in and Miller had the honour of striking the first boundary off the 19th ball. Miller was the fourth man out when he was clean bowled by James Fuller for 15 and Clarke followed after a calamitous run-out with Leus du Plooy for 17.Du Plooy hit three boundaries in his 37 and his compatriot Dwaine Pretorius chipped in with 15 off seven balls. The Rondo, USWNT edition: Are recent defeats worrisome for Emma Hayes, where does Alyssa Thompson fit with Triple Espresso, who should start in 2027?

GOAL and INDIVISA writers discuss USWNT's split with Brazil, Thompson's rise and Hayes' experimentation with squad

Emma Hayes likes to experiment. That much is clear. The USWNT are missing a handful of starters due to injury. Hayes' solution? Rest some of the other big names, and see how deep her player pool is.

She now has more answers. And after a mixed camp, with one win and one loss against Brazil over the last week, the former Chelsea boss is getting increased clarity as to where her squad stands ahead of the 2027 Women's World Cup.

There were a lot of good things to be taken from the two fixtures. Alyssa Thompson was excellent. Cat Macario stood out. Some of the USWNT's attacking play was stellar. But there were also some concerns, highlighted by an unsteady midfield and backline that looked shaky without the influence of Naomi Girma.

Still, if this was about learnings, then Hayes can see the last 10 days as nothing but a success. But what exactly has she learned? After losing to both Japan and Brazil in 2025, should their be concerns? And where do the USWNT go from here?

GOAL US and INDIVISA writers break it all down in a USWNT edition of… The Rondo.

Getty ImagesThe USWNT have lost two of their last three games – should Hayes be worried?

Ryan Tolmich: Not at all. If you’re going to lose, lose now and lose to some of the world’s best teams. This camp was a perfect mix of reasons for confidence and humility, which is just what Hayes will want. The USWNT know they can beat the world’s best, but they also know it isn’t guaranteed. With two years remaining until the World Cup, that’s a good lesson to keep driving home.

Celia Balf: Absolutely not. If anything, more questions have been answered. The record in Hayes' first 20 games is now 16-2-2, and the two losses are against a very good Japan team at the SheBelieves Cup and then Brazil. Hayes experimented in both matches against Brazil, playing two very different starting XIs. The first game was a more expected lineup, with a mix of veterans and new players. Tuesday, however, it was collectively the youngest starting XI in her tenure, average age of 22. Did that show? Yes. The lack of experience showed up in transitional moments, and in front of the goal. This is OK, though, because of when it happened – years before a major international tournament.

Jacob Schneider: Not a bit. The stars were rested and Hayes gave opportunities to a lot of young, fringe players who – in normal circumstances – would be with the U23 camp. It was an unfortunate loss, and it did come with veterans on the pitch after multiple substitutions, but there's no need to worry.

AdvertisementImagnWho was the big winner of the USWNT camp?

RT: The last World Cup run may have been a bit premature, but Alyssa Thompson will sure as hell be ready for the next one. Breaking up Triple Espresso won’t be easy but, during this period where that group isn’t together – Trinity Rodman played just one of the two games against Brazil, and neither Sophia Wilson or Mallory Swanson were in this camp – Thompson looks like the clear favorite to force her way into that attack. She was fantastic during this camp and remains a young player to watch as she blossoms into superstardom.

CB: Clearly Alyssa Thompson. She didn't score, but she proved a point. She's a threat out wide, has the pace to keep up and pass some of the world's best players, and creates absolute chaos on the attack. Thompson's vision to draw in defenders only to then slip a pass to Rodman was exceptional and just a couple days later, she had similar moments setting up Cat Macario for a goal.

JS: It's both Thompson ad Cat Macario, the Chelsea forward who was stupendous in both matches. Thompson was immense in game two with her electrifying pace and work rate in the final-third. With the Alex Morgan era over, and Wilson out due to her pregnancy, it seems that Hayes has found at least two more reliable options in the attack to help when the likes of Swanson, Rodman and Rose Lavelle are not available.

AFPWho had the most disappointing camp?

RT: Just in general, there are major concerns about the midfield. Lindsey Heaps and Sam Coffey are locked in and those behind them aren’t really pushing them. Korbin Albert hasn’t impressed in a while and, playing next to her, Claire Hutton didn’t really standout either. Albert, in particular, needed to show more as she looks to keep her place in a very crowded, but flawed, midfield picture. It's Hayes’ job to figure out some recipe that works. Right now, though, it’s still hard to make something that taste good out of the midfield ingredients at Hayes’ disposal.

CB: This is a tough one. I do think the biggest disappointment of the camp overall was the play of USWNT's backline. It was shaky, in both games. Not much composure and possession, and passes out of the back were rarely converted. As a result, Heaps and Coffey were underutilized as an outlet pass out of the back.

JS: The central defenders. With both Girma and Davidson sidelined, Hayes needed some standout performances to determine the second string pairing. Tara McKeown did well in game one, but struggled in game two, while Alana Cook had a howler of a showing in match two, as well. Emily Sonnett didn't really put a foot wrong, but she didn't particularly stand out, either.

Getty Images SportIf the World Cup started today, who's your back four?

RT: If it starts today, Naomi Girma is on the field, even if her centerback partner’s sole job is to hold her up on her feet, so we’ll start there. Girma is the best defender in the world and she’ll be back soon. Another unfortunate injury knocked out Davidson, but Sonnett is still fine. Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox are, for now, also fine at fullback. But it all starts with Girma, who is the most irreplaceable player in the USWNT pool.

CB: Fox, Girma, Sonnett and Dunn. But that's today. Much can happen between now and 2027.

JS: If everyone is healthy, Fox, Girma, Davidson and Dunn. Left back is surely a debate at this moment. Jenna Nighswonger is being converted into a midfielder at Arsenal, and the other options on the table are inexperienced pros. Dunn has been reliable and it's become increasingly clear that she is comfortable in that role, despite being a midfielder/forward by trade.

Imagine him & Mbeumo: Arsenal looking at PL star who’s outperformed Havertz

The season hasn’t entirely gone according to plan, but after Wednesday’s North London derby win, there is a certain optimism among the Arsenal fanbase.

Mikel Arteta’s side remain four points off of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, but with just under half of the campaign to go, the race is very much back on.

However, to ensure that the team have the best chance of overtaking the Reds, the board must act and bring in some attacking players this month.

Two of the most prevalent Premier League names most heavily linked with a move to Arsenal have been Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

Now, recent reports have linked another forward with the club, a forward who is outperforming Kai Havertz and also starring in the top-flight…

Arsenal chase Premier League poacher

According to a recent report from The Telegraph’s John Percy, Arsenal are now interested in Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

However, the Gunners aren’t the only ones, as Percy has also revealed that fellow Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest are incredibly keen to land the Bees man this month.

A potential price is not mentioned in the story, but considering the 28-year-old’s ÂŁ25k-per-week contract is set to expire next summer, it’s not unrealistic to think he’d be available for a reasonable price, despite Thomas Frank expectedly telling the press he isn’t for sale.

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa celebrates

It could require something of an overpay to get this transfer done, but considering Wissa’s form this season, it might be worth pursuing, especially as a double swoop for him and Mbeumo has the potential to be game-changing.

Why Arsenal should sign Wissa alongside Mbeumo

So, to get straight to the point, the reason Wissa could be an incredible signing to make alongside Mbeumo this month is straightforward: they’re already playing brilliantly together at Brentford.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoin action with Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Magalhaes

For example, the Bees are the fifth-highest scoring team in the league at the moment, and the former has been involved in 33% of their goals this season, while the latter has been involved in 40%.

Moreover, when playing together, the pair have directly combined for ten goals in the Premier League alone and earn an average of 1.43 points per game.

Finally, both forwards are more than comfortable on the wing or down the middle, with the former Troyes ace preferring the right and the former Lorient star the left, meaning they could easily interchange throughout a game, in turn, confusing opposition defenders and potentially even allowing Bukayo Saka to float into the middle at times as well.

With that said, the other reason Arteta and Co should look to sign the “massively underrated” poacher, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is his output this season.

For example, in just 22 appearances, totalling 1549 minutes, the 28-year-old marksman has scored 12 goals and provided two assists, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 1.57 games, or every 110.64 minutes.

In contrast, Havertz has scored as many goals and provided one more assist but has done so in 28 appearances, totalling 2322 minutes, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 1.86 games or every 154.80 minutes.

Ultimately, he isn’t the most prominent name around, but if he can be signed for a reasonable fee, then Wissa could be the perfect addition to Arsenal’s squad this month, especially if the club can get a hold of Mbeumo as well.

'That's what this stadium does!' – Harry Maguire believes Old Trafford played role in Man Utd's incredible comeback win over Lyon to set up Europa League semi-final with Athletic Club

Harry Maguire has credited the aura of Old Trafford in helping Manchester United complete a stunning 5-4 comeback over Lyon in the Europa League.

Maguire was speaking to in the aftermath of one of Old Trafford's greatest European nights. While the England international was clearly ecstatic with the result and his important intervention, he still found time to criticise the performance, saying the Red Devils should never have allowed themselves to fall into such a perilous position against ten men. Corentin Tolisso was shown a second yellow in the 89th minute.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The centre-half turned into a No.9 for the last ten minutes of extra time, providing a vocal point in attack for United's comeback attempts. With the game tied at 4-4, Ruben Amorim's tactics paid off in full, as Maguire outwitted Moussa Niakhate at the back post to nod home. A VAR check for a hand in the Lyon defender's back didn't unduly worry the former-United captain, who said there was "nowhere near enough" contact for a foul.

WHAT HARRY MAGUIRE SAID

Maguire said: "Obviously it's an incredible game, we made really hard work of it. We had full control in the second half, had chances to score a third, then they scored out of no where. It put us on the back foot.

"To go down 4-2 in extra-time to 10 men is not good enough, we opened ourselves too much. But we dug in and showed great spirit, that's what this stadium does."

On his goal, he added: "I felt like the fourth goal for them was a sucker punch but that we'd get chances to get back into it. It fell to myself and thankfully I scored, it was an amazing feeling. [Niakhate] was back-pedalling but I just held him there, with my hand, there was no where near enough for a foul."

Their own Marmoush: Arsenal could launch late mega-money move for ÂŁ80m star

The clock is well and truly ticking for Arsenal now.

The transfer window slams shut in less than a week, and despite their acute need for goalscorers, Mikel Arteta’s side have failed to add a single player to their injury-riddled squad.

Worse still, Manchester City, who have denied them Premier League glory for the last two years, have been on a spending spree this month, with the ÂŁ59m signing of Eintracht Frankfurt’s free-scoring Omar Marmoush the pièce de rĂ©sistance of their business.

However, there may yet be cause for optimism among the Arsenal fanbase, as recent reports have linked the club with another sensational forward who could be their answer to City’s new Egyptian superstar.

Arsenal chasing Premier League star

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Arsenal have maintained their intense interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha.

Transfer Focus

In fact, the report has gone a step further and revealed that the Old Gold are now ‘expecting one or more’ offers for the Brazilian superstar before the transfer deadline on February 3rd.

However, the Gunners are not the only interested party, as the story also names Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa as the other particularly keen sides, and while a potential price is not mentioned, reports from earlier this month claimed that a fee of around ÂŁ80m could be enough to tempt Wolves into selling.

It will likely be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line this month, but given Cunha’s ability and Arsenal’s need for more attackers, it’s one the club cannot afford to pass up, and the fact he’s won comparisons to Marmoush can only be a good thing.

Why Cunha would be Arsenal's answer to Marmoush

Okay, before we look at some of the reasons as to why Arsenal should be going all out to sign Cunha before the deadline next week, let’s examine this comparison to Marmoush and where it has come from.

Well, it primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the former Frankfurt phenom is the ninth most similar forward to the Wolves superstar.

The best way to see how this conclusion has been reached is by looking at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, goals per shot and shot on target, passing accuracy, expected assists, through balls, crosses, carries into the final third and more, all per 90.

However, another way in which the Brazilian dynamo could become the Gunners’ answer to Marmoush is by the simple act of joining the club this month, as while the North Londoners would still have spent significantly less than the reigning champions, they would have at least got a marquee and sought-after attacker through the door.

Moreover, and this is also a reason why Arteta and Co might want to sign the former Atlético Madrid star, he also has the ability to play in multiple positions in the attack, be that on the wings, down the middle or even in attacking midfield, which is a versatility he shares with the Egyptian ace, who can play on either wing or down the middle.

Finally, while the 25-year-old hasn’t been quite as deadly in front of goal this season, he’s still been an incredibly effective attacker.

For example, in just 23 appearances this season, totalling 1807 minutes, the “sensational” dangerman, as dubbed by former professional turned pundit Micah Richards, has scored ten goals and provided four assists, which comes out to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every 1.64 games, or every 129.07 minutes.

Ultimately, Arsenal are in desperate need of an attacking signing before the transfer window slams shut, and while he’ll cost them a pretty penny, Cunha looks like the perfect option.

Furthermore, due to his statistical and positional similarities, he could also be their answer to Marmoush.

Mondli Khumalo 'fit and strong' after successful final round of surgery

Former South Africa Under-19 player had been hospitalised after an assault near Taunton in May

Firdose Moonda08-Sep-2022Mondli Khumalo, the former South Africa Under-19 and Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland bowler, has had a final, successful surgery after being assaulted in Somerset in May. He is now able to move around without a protective helmet and hopes to be able to return to professional cricket by early next year.”That was the final piece of the puzzle,” Rob Humphries, Khumalo’s agent, told ESPNcricinfo. “Now it’s about healing and the pathway back to professional cricket. He is in great spirits and physically, he is really good. He can get up and walk about. It’s about being able to get back in the gym and rebuilding his fitness. He is fit and strong and in a really good space.”Khumalo, who was on his first trip as an overseas professional at North Petherton Cricket Club, was attacked outside a pub in Bridgwater, near Taunton, where he was celebrating a win with his team-mates.A 27-year-old man was arrested and released on investigation and the case awaits the go-ahead from the crown prosecution service.Khumalo was unconscious at the scene and then placed in an induced coma for four days. He had three operations to relieve pressure and bleeding in the brain. Ten days after being hospitalised, Khumalo was able to stand unaided and his club team-mate Lloyd Irish shared a video of Khumalo catching a sponge ball. His fourth and final operation, to replace the piece of skull that had been removed to attend to the brain injury, took place on September 7. It would have taken place sooner, but was delayed by several weeks after Khumalo contracted Covid-19. He will remain in England until he is cleared to travel, with Humphries aiming for a November return. Khumalo’s mother and uncle, who made the trip across from South Africa to England soon after the attack, have already returned home and Khumalo has been in the club’s care.In June, they organised a crowd-funding campaign to help with the costs of Khumalo’s treatment, which is chargeable by the NHS, and raised ÂŁ27,379. Further funding will be needed, as his bills have exceeded this amount.

Clement must finally hand a start to exciting rarely-seen Rangers teen

Glasgow Rangers take a backseat from Scottish Premiership action this weekend as they resume their Scottish Cup journey – one that Philippe Clement hopefully ends with the Ibrox side lifting the trophy for the first time since 2022.

Queen’s Park are the visitors, and the Light Blues appear to have a fairly straightforward route into the quarter-finals.

Rangersmanager PhilippeClement

Rangers won’t be complacent against the Championship side, but Clement may look to make a few changes to his starting XI from the one that defeated Ross County 4-0 last weekend.

Rangers team news v Queen's Park

Several players are still out injured and won’t be available for the Scottish Cup clash. Danilo, Oscar Cortes, Dujon Sterling and Leon King will all miss the match, while both Connor Barron and Ridvan Yilmaz are doubts.

This could see several fringe players get a runout in order to stake their claim in the starting XI.

Findlay Curtis made his European debut against Manchester United a couple of weeks ago and is one of the finest young talents at Ibrox. He extended his contract last month and could be unleashed against the second-tier side today.

One player who must be unleashed this afternoon is Bailey Rice. The teenager is the brightest midfield prospect the club has had within their academy for several years. He played the second half against the Red Devils and certainly didn’t look out of place against the Premier League giants.

Clement must unleash Bailey Rice against Queen's Park

The Light Blues signed Rice from fellow Premiership side Motherwell back in the summer of 2022. He was wanted by other clubs, including Manchester City, but it was Glasgow where the Scot saw the best opportunity for success.

In February 2023, Rice became the second-youngest player to feature for the club as he came on as a late substitute against Livingston in a league tie.

Last season, he made four senior appearances for the Gers, but in order for the teenager to fulfil his potential, more game time was required.

After failing to play during the first half of the campaign, Clement moved Kieran Dowell on in January, freeing up space for Rice in the first-team squad. Since then, he has featured in three matches.

Analyst John Walker has lavished praise on the youngster previously, stating that Rice “has an eye for a pass”, and he has demonstrated this during his fleeting opportunities for the first team.

Rice played the second half against Ross County last weekend, coming on for Mohamed Diomande. The 18-year-old showed a maturity beyond his years, finishing with an 82% pass success rate and winning five of his seven contested duels, while making two tackles during the second half.

Unleashing Rice from the start against Queen’s Park will allow the teen to continue where he left off against the Highland side, perhaps even giving Clement something to think about.
