Arsenal fans divided on starting line-up against Leicester

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has named his first team of the Premier League season for the visit of Leicester City to the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

With Alexis Sanchez missing because of abdominal issues, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck start behind debutant and club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette, while Hector Bellerin and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fill the right and left wing-back positions respectively.

Mohamed Elneny partners Granit Xhaka in the middle of the park with a three-man defence of Sead Kolasinac, Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding behind them, with captain Laurent Koscielny missing because of injury and Shkodran Mustafi only fit enough to start on the substitutes’ bench.

Arsenal supporters were quick to have their say on the starting line-up via social media, and they were divided with their opinions.

While some were concerned that the defence will cost them against the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, others were pleased with the team and expect an opening day victory.

Why Sissoko could be a key player in Spurs’ title challenge

After coming so close to the title in 2015/16, Mauricio Pochettino needed to bring in a couple of players to try and give Tottenham that extra push to end the season on top.

On Deadline Day last year, the Argentine brought in Moussa Sissoko on a club-record deal from relegated Newcastle, but the deal ended up being one of the Premier League’s worst bit of business that summer.

The Frenchman failed to find the net in 33 appearances and only started eight games in the Premier League. Sissoko was quickly labelled as not good enough and an obvious panic-buy that wasn’t going to work out.

He was linked with a move away throughout this summer but is still a part of the Spurs squad, playing the first 58 minutes of the club’s league opener against his old club last weekend.

If he stays with Spurs after the deadline, which unless Pochettino brings someone in seems very likely, Sissoko could become an integral part to the club’s title challenge and erase the failure of his first season.

The 28-year-old has all the talent to thrive at Spurs but seems to be lacking in confidence after two poor seasons with Newcastle and Tottenham. This is a player who has 52 caps for France and has appeared for his country at both the World Cup and European Championships.

When his work rate is high, Sissoko can be one of the best wing players in the league. It seems like he just needs a goal to get his confidence back.

Pochettino still trusts that Sissoko can turn his Spurs career around, otherwise he wouldn’t be starting him, and the Frenchman can’t let that confidence go to waste.

If Sissoko can find his 2013-15 form, he could be like a new signing for Tottenham.  He still has a lot of football left in him and a lot to prove with a World Cup next summer.

His obvious talent makes him a key player for Pochettino and Spurs fans will be hoping that the Argentinian’s faith pays off.

Arsenal star Sanchez criticised for being overweight

Alexis Sanchez’s future was the main focus on transfer deadline day, and despite opting against signing a new contract, the attacking player stayed at the Emirates.

According to the Daily Mail, the 28-year-old was keen to join Manchester City in a last-minute deal potentially costing around £60m, but Arsenal’s failure to land Monaco’s Thomas Lemar had a knock-on effect.

With no replacement on the cards, the Gunners refused to sell Sanchez, who was thought to have been ready to get the deal done before playing for Chile in their World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.

The transfer never went ahead, and it seems that Sanchez has another problem, according to former Chile youth coach Sulantay.

The current manager of Chilean second-tier side Cobreloa has claimed that the Arsenal man has put on weight.

He told La Cuarta:

“I saw him gone, I saw him out of physical shape, totally. He’s fatter than normal. Without his spark, he never left that Paraguayan defence behind. He never made a diagonal run, it was something else. It was not Alexis. This can bring you problems later, the statements of wanting to leave. The teammates must have felt nothing for him.”

Sanchez missed the majority of Arsenal’s pre-season schedule due to injury and he only returned to action on August 27 in a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Liverpool.

With the Chilean now unable to secure a move away from Arsenal until January, the attacker will have to decide whether to get his head down or avoid game time.

Sanchez will come to the end of his contract next summer.

Underwhelming Hazard display hints at bench role vs Arsenal on Sunday

Far from the emerging crisis many anticipated after unexpectedly losing to Burnley at home on the Premier League’s opening weekend, it’s actually incredibly impressive that Chelsea are just one point off the top of the table and have already beaten three decent sides in Tottenham, Everton and Leicester in the absence of their star player – Eden Hazard.

Indeed, the Belgium international began the campaign on the sidelines due to injury and is only just returning to action, making his second appearance of the season from the substitutes bench last night in a comfortable 6-0 win over Qarabag in the Champions League.

Of course, the primary objective was for Chelsea’s talismanic attacker to get some much-needed minutes under his belt, but his lack of sharpness – especially considering the limited quality of the opposition – was a little worrying. From just over half an hour on the pitch, Hazard produced one effort at goal, which wasn’t on target, one created chance and two dribbles, while missing 25% of his passes and suffering one dispossession and two unsuccessful touches.

That may not matter much when Chelsea are already storming to a victory over Qarabag, but it does create doubts over whether Hazard should start arguably the Blues’ biggest Premier League test of the season so far – a London derby with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

So, Chelsea fans, would you start the 78-cap attacker against the Gunners? Let us know by voting below…

Bilic confirms injury blow to West Ham United’s Antonio

West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has confirmed that Michail Antonio will undergo a scan to learn the extent of his groin problem.

The 27-year-old was forced off the pitch midway through the first half of the Hammers’ 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the London Stadium.

Antonio had a four-month layoff with a hamstring injury that he suffered in April last season.

He has since failed to find his shooting boots having gone five Premier League games this season without finding the back of the net or creating an assist.

Saturday’s injury is likely to hamper his progress, but it is uncertain how long the problem will keep Antonio on the sidelines for.

After the final whistle, Bilic told reporters:

“It is a groin. He felt it a bit. He didn’t pull it big time, but we have to scan it first to see how big or how bad it is. We are not taking a risk, as we are very cautious about that. He passed a test on Friday – not on Saturday because it was an early kickoff – and it was all clear. We’re not taking those kind of risks here, knowing that it can harm him in the long term. It just happened and it is in a different spot, not the same spot.”

Despite losing the game against their London rivals, West Ham had decent spells in across the 90 minutes.

The club find themselves 18th in the league table after winning one, drawing one and losing four.

HYS: Liverpool fans – Pick your England squad

It’s impossible to predict what will happen between now and the end of the season, but the closing of England’s qualifying campaign beckons us to consider what Gareth Southgate’s side might look like by the time the World Cup in Russia comes around.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has become a Three Lions mainstay since 2014 and has even worn the armband on occasion for the national team too.

But amid an underwhelming start to the season with the Reds and following a spate of England displays during which the lack of creativity in central midfield became increasingly evident, not everybody is convinced he should be a key figure in Southgate’s plans for next summer.

In fact, some would argue he shouldn’t be in the squad at all – but what do you think Liverpool fans? Let us know who would and wouldn’t make your Three Lions squad by checking out our 66 suggestions below and giving each one a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

Rangers fans not impressed with rumours of Morelos departure

As reported by Football Insider, Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is the subject of interest from English Championship Aston Villa.

The outlet reports that the Villans had scouts watching the in-form Colombian during the Light Blues’ Friday night win away to St Johnstone and that bids are expected in January.

The 21-year-old has been a sensation since joining Rangers in the summer from Finnish side HJK Helsinki, scoring eight goals in his first 11 domestic matches. In a season of ups and downs so far for Pedro Caixinha’s men, he’s been one of the undoubted highlights.

No surprise then that supporters are not happy with the prospect of saying goodbye to him. They’ve been waiting for years to find a prolific striker at Ibrox and now they have their man, they’re not willing to let go, at least cheaply anyway.

With cups up for grabs and the chasing of Celtic to contend with, it’s understandable they wouldn’t want their in-form striker to leave in the middle of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to incredible Real Madrid win

Tottenham Hotspur beat the Champions League holders Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley on Wednesday night to qualify for the knockout stages of the competitions, and Spurs fans were understandably ecstatic.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men came into the clash against the La Liga giants on the back of a 1-1 draw in the Bernabeu a fortnight ago, and they perhaps couldn’t have dreamt that they would perform so well on their own patch.

The north London outfit dominated the match from start to finish and a brace from Dele Alli – who was making his first appearance in the Champions League this season following suspension – was added to by a goal from Christian Eriksen to wrap up a relatively comfortable victory.

Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the historic win via social media, and while one simply said “give us the trophy now”, another said “never thought I’d see this”.

Tottenham fans throw their support behind misfiring Llorente

Fernando Llorente scored 15 times in 35 appearances for Swansea City last season, but the experienced forward is yet to register for his new club Tottenham Hotspur.

The 32-year-old, who was strongly linked with Chelsea before Spurs swooped to sign him, is now 12 games without a goal in all competitions this season.

The statistics do not make great reading, but Llorente has only played 65 minutes of Premier League football this term, with all six of his appearances coming off the bench.

He was again used during the latter stages of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace, but struggled to make his mark during the final 13 minutes.

It appears that the Spaniard, who is valued at £7.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, still has the full support of the Tottenham fans, however, who responded positively to a Twitter post from the striker on Monday.

Llorente will surely get his name on the scoresheet sooner rather than later, although another 12 games without a goal and the Spurs fans might not be so kind.

Walters’ exceptional scoring record highlights Liverpool’s longest-standing weakness

In both appearance and playing style, Jonathan Walters is anything but a beautiful footballer. And yet, there is something so prettily poetic in a wide forward rarely revered for his technical quality being Stoke City’s Premier League top scorer against a club as famed for their attacking verve as Liverpool.

Indeed, from the Reds and the Potters’ 18 top flight meetings during the last 25 years, no one has bettered the Irishman’s seven goals, a return accumulated in just 13 appearances.

In fact, the now-Burnley man’s tally for Stoke was almost twice that of the next-top scorer in the fixture, Daniel Sturridge.

And while that owes much to Walters’ longevity at the Bet365 Stadium, spending more seasons at Stoke than many of his attacking counterparts, including Sturridge, have at Liverpool, that would be to ignore the calibre of forwards the Reds have boasted during that time, their potency against other teams and the polarising resources and objectives of the two clubs – one amongst the greatest in the history of English football, the other only first featuring in the Premier League in 2008/09.

To put the significance of Walters’ return against Liverpool into perspective, 16% of all of his top-flight goals have come versus the Anfield outfit.

And yet, in many ways, perhaps we shouldn’t be all that surprised. Walters may not be a glamorous attacking player but he’s certainly an effective one, averaging six goals per Premier League season during his time with the Potters, and that simplistic orthodoxy, that impeccable industriousness to compensate for limited natural flair and that robust physicality combines to encompass Liverpool’s longest-serving weakness; the failure to overcome well-organised, direct and gritty teams who, like Walters, do the simple things well.

Of course, such declarations are nothing new and the trend has existed practically since Rafa Benitez parted company with the Reds in 2010. But even this season, we’ve seen evidence of it continuing; Liverpool have conceded the most goals from set pieces of any big-six team, while the average possession of non-top-six opposition during matches in which Liverpool have conceded this season is just 40%.

Likewise, the calibre of forward to score against them falls into a similar bracket as Walters, not necessarily the most talented but for one reason or another still effective; Newcastle’s Joselu, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy and Watford’s Stefano Okaka. They’re all aggressive and physically imposing players who flourish from a shared brand of simplistic service.

The good news for Liverpool heading into their midweek meeting with Stoke is that the tradition of the Potters being their bogey side has steadily seeped out of existence. The exception being the infamous 6-1 at the end of the 2014/15 season, Liverpool boast seven wins out of eight against Stoke, including three wins away from home – that’s a far cry from the two wins, three defeats and five draws during their first 10 Premier League encounters with the Potters.

Similarly, Walters now plies his trade elsewhere, joining Sean Dyche’s ranks during the summer, and under Mark Hughes, Stoke are no longer the fearsome physical outfit of yesteryear. But if there’s one player who can reignite that trend for the Potters this Wednesday, it’s a former Red – Peter Crouch. Enjoying another Indian summer at the age of 36, only Alvaro Morata has scored more headed goals than Stoke’s veteran front-man this season.

Tellingly of how important that aerial threat could be, no big-six side has conceded more headers than Liverpool this season, and headers were responsible for three of Walters’ seven against the Merseysiders.
