PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Player of the Month – Bruno Fernandes wins Premier League award for February

Manchester United newbie Bruno Fernandes has won the FA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award for February by a landslide after picking up 58% of the vote in a poll run by fan engagement experts Snack Media.

A return of one goal and two Premier League assists gave fans a glimpse into what the Portugal international can offer at Old Trafford, and he left compatriot Rui Patricio, who finished second with 19% of the vote, in his wake following an impressive month for the Wolves stopper.

In the first of five divisional votes carried out over eleven days via Snack’s digital and social networks and supported by top flight football clubs and press, Harry Maguire claimed third place with 8% of the vote. Burnley prodigy Dwight McNeil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Richarlison made up the rest of the top six.

Maguire equalled Fernandes’ Whoscored rating of 8.01 for the month from the list of nominees as the top-four chasing outfit took seven points from an available nine – including a 2-0 win away at Chelsea – and showcased their growing defensive solidity with a trio of clean sheets in February.

Evidently, Fernandes’ promise in the early phase of his United career resonated most with Premier League fans across the country as the Red Devils showed clear signs of improvement with the majestic midfielder pulling the strings.

The full results of the vote for December’s PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award were as follows…

– Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) – 58%

– Rui Patricio (Wolves) – 19%

– Harry Maguire (Manchester United) – 8%

– Dwight McNeil (Burnley) – 6%

– Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) – 4%

– Richarlison (Everton) – 4%

Southampton: One in, one out needed this summer

One man who truly hasn’t grabbed his many lifelines at St Mary’s is Yan Valery.

The youngster somewhat burst onto the scene last season, scoring at Old Trafford against Manchester United and also netting in the win over Tottenham – however, he has failed to build on such an eye-catching start.

The Frenchman’s blossoming came while Cedric Soares was on loan at Inter Milan, but the Portugal international somehow managed to force his way back in ahead of Valery this season before Arsenal signed him in January.

The Southampton academy graduate was then introduced to Kyle Walker-Peters as fresh competition, but isn’t really doing much to prove to Ralph Hasenhuttl that he deserves to be his leading right-back.

The 21-year-old was entrusted to start against Newcastle last time out, but allowed Allan Saint-Maximin to tackle him and prod the ball home late on, seeing his teammates suffer defeat as a result.

In that respect, he has had far too long to prove himself and seems to be regressing, so Hasenhuttl must ditch him.

In his place? Well, with Walker-Peters also returning to Tottenham this summer, Southampton should swoop for a man they considered signing in January – Genk right-back Joakim Maehle.

The Danish defender could potentially become Hasenhuttl’s modern-day version of Nathaniel Clyne with his eye-catching end product and tendency to roam up and down the flank – Maehle has five goals and 14 assists across both this season and last term.

At just 22 years of age, the Jupiler Pro League star would also be a fine long-term investment – it should also be noted that Clyne was signed as a 21-year-old, so the pair are on track for similar progression in the game.

Are you a true Saints expert? Test your knowledge on these famous academy graduates…

He has long been on the Saints’ radar as the club tried to sign him in January 2019 as well, and seeing how problematic the right-back position has been of late, this is a move which should come as a no-brainer to Hasenhuttl and those who write the cheques at St Mary’s.

In other news, this Southampton star may be having the biggest opportunity of his career snatched away…

Celtic’s Jeremie Frimpong perfect for Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at Celtic was one with fond memories. The Northern Irishman won two SPFL titles, three League Cups and also two Scottish Cups.

From becoming known as the man to somehow fail to win the Premier League title despite possessing Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, he became a serial winner.

He’s now doing a stellar job with Leicester too, taking them to the verge of Champions League qualification for just a second time.

But what the manager has been best at is developing young players into the stars of tomorrow. It’s one of his key philosophies, taking players ditched by their often more established sides and then making them some of the very best around.

Take Daniel Sturridge for instance. Neglected by Manchester City and Chelsea, he went onto score 21 goals in just 29 games in one season in the English top-flight. At Celtic you had the likes of Moussa Dembele, ditched by PSG only to then fetch a £19.7m fee when he left the SPFL.

The list is endless and his philosophy at Leicester is now centred around young and emerging talent too. Ben Chilwell and James Maddison are regulars in the England squad while Caglar Soyuncu and Harvey Barnes have emerged as important players – featuring 55 times between them in 2019/20.

However, there’s one very particular player he would have been drooling over the prospect of managing if he was still at Parkhead – Jeremie Frimpong.

Like Oliver nNtcham and Sturridge of days gone by, he is a Man City reject. The right-back signed last summer and consequently arrived through the gates just months after Rodgers departed for pastures new.

The fact of the matter, though, is that Frimpong has quickly become one of the brightest prospects in Glasgow. “He wears people down,” Neil Lennon quirked last year while also describing the teenager as outstanding and hailing him the best young player he’s ever worked with.

He couldn’t fit more perfectly into the Rodgers mantra – if only he had the chance to manage him.

Speaking to the FA previously, the 47-year-old noted: “I started on a journey to try and make young players feel important and give them confidence to deal with the football.”

Indeed, there have been many success stories that Rodgers has to boast about. Unfortunately for him, Frimpong’s will be Lennon’s very own triumph if he continues to build upon his debut season in Scotland.

Only real Celtic fans will get 100% on the Ultimate Hoops quiz. Test your knowledge below…

That being said, just imagine if a manager like Rodgers got to craft the 19-year-old’s game and improve him. You only need to look at the influence he’s had on Ricardo Pereira, someone now linked with Barcelona.

In an era where Rodgers and Celtic equalled success, Frimpong would have been a match made in heaven.

Everton fans react to Oumar Niasse getting stopped by police

Oumar Niasse hasn’t started a game for Everton this season but he is very much still a Toffee and has a few months left to run on his contract.

The club will therefore be very disappointed to hear of his late-night activity recently, as the striker was caught driving during the lockdown one evening by police.

Not only that, but he had three other people in the car with him, and therefore showed a flagrant disregard for the measures put in place to protect public health and safety.

It was a careless act and one that could mean the 29-year-old is fined by the authorities, and perhaps by Everton too should they see it as an appropriate course of action to take.

Calling all FFC readers! Raise money for charities and bring together communities this Saturday the 28th at 3pm by taking part in the #FLYTHEFLAG campaign. Click this banner to find out how you can get involved.

Many Evertonians are understandably angered by his actions, and many view them as crossing a boundary that means he should have his contract terminated – though his playing ability may be swaying that opinion somewhat.

Despite the rule-breaking, some feel sacking the player would be too severe a punishment, but do call for him to be fined by the club.

That ought to be the direction the Merseyside outfit take on this matter in order to set an example not just to their players, but their numerous fans also.

Failure to do so would create unnecessary risk and make it seem a little more acceptable to bend the rules to how people see fit, which would be a disastrous outcome in the current climate.

Phil Hay reveals how much Radrizzani pumps into Leeds

Leeds United are certainly banking on promotion this campaign, and failure to do so could have financial repercussions based on the numbers revealed by The Athletic’s Phil Hay in a recent appearance on a podcast…

What’s been said?

The west Yorkshire outfit are sat top of the Championship standings with only nine games remaining, but the current season is on hold for the foreseeable future, which has put the idea of going up or even clinching the title in doubt for the time being.

And given Hay’s revelation, it could be a costly and unfortunate consequence should the EFL decide to void the season, but ultimately, there’s still plenty of time for such a decision to be made.

Speaking to his Athletic colleagues Mark Chapman and David Ornstein on their podcast, Hay said:

“This is a pretty exceptional crisis and 100% unforeseen, but it’s not a secret at Leeds that Radrizzani has to put in around about £1m per month to pay for costs and to cover expenses and without that, they’d be in financial difficulty.

“I mean, the wage bill has almost doubled on his watch and he came in in 2017, and they have a huge turnover by Championship standards – it’s up around £40m-45m and they think they can get it over £50m which I know in the context of the Premier League doesn’t sound like a lot of cash but it is a very successful and slick financial operation at Leeds.

“Despite that, the wage bill is kicking up to around 80-85% of turnover and when you’re in that position, you’re always going to work at a loss, particularly outside of the Premier League.”

Phil Hay on The Ornstein and Chapman podcast.

Gambling on promotion

The figures mentioned by the ever-reliable United scribe are rather alarming – the chairman is pumping in serious cash – £1m per month, which has to amount to around £10m per season given the players’ contracts run until June and that they’d usually be back in for training by August.

No wonder the players, management and coaching staff have all agreed to defer some of their wages in order to help cash flow and allow others at the club their full pay.

Call yourself a Leeds expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Leeds’ wage bill takes up the majority of their turnover, hardly a surprise after the club agreed a £2.5m deal to land Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan in January with the RB Leipzig frontman on £35k-a-week, according to Football Insider.

Helder Costa is on similar figures, as per Spotrac, at around £32.5k-a-week whilst also costing them £15m in transfer fees.

Clinching a manager of Marcelo Bielsa’s calibre won’t have come cheap either, so Leeds are certainly taking a huge gamble on promotion and this situation puts all of that at great risk.

Everton: Fans discuss Roberto Martinez tactic to place Romelu Lukaku on the right-wing

Lots of Everton fans have been discussing a tactic made by former boss Roberto Martinez, who decided to play Romelu Lukaku on the right-wing in a throwback Premier League game against Arsenal at Goodison Park.

The Merseyside club shared the team on their official Twitter page, which included Steven Naismith up top instead of Lukaku. Everton won the match 3-0 with both players scoring, whilst new Arsenal boss and former Toffee Mikel Arteta netted an own goal for the Gunners, as per the BBC.

Supporters discussed the tactic from Martinez to play Lukaku on the wing, and many were impressed. According to Transfermarkt, the 26-year old only played twice on the wing under the Spaniard, with the majority of his appearances coming in his more natural position as a central forward. The Belgian international scored 61 goals in total for EFC under Martinez, as per the website.

These Evertonians talked about the tactic on Twitter, and many thought it worked, praising both Lukaku and Martinez:

Tottenham Hotspur: Fans react to Jose Mourinho’s plans for Serge Aurier

Jose Mourinho wants Tottenham Hotspur to offer Serge Aurier a new contract, according to le10sport.

The Daily Mail claimed last month that Spurs were looking to sell Aurier in the summer, due to disciplinary problems in the nationwide lockdown imposed due to the ongoing pandemic.

However, the French outlet reports Mourinho is keen to extend the Ivorian’s spell at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, given the fact he only has two years remaining on his current deal (Transfermarkt).

After arriving in North London from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain for £22.5m back in 2017, the defender initially struggled under Mauricio Pochettino, yet, following the departure of Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker-Peters’ loan move, he has become the first choice right-back for the Argentine’s successor.

Unfortunately, the Ivory Coast international has antagonised the board with a number of high-profile blunders, but Mourinho is determined to keep the 27-year-old in the famous Lilywhites jersey.

Naturally, lots of Spurs fans reacted to Aurier’s “shocking” update, with one supporter dubbing him a “clown,” and another adding it is “nonsense from Levy.”

Take a look at some of the mixed reactions down below…

Injury News: Ben Davies’ return timely with Danny Rose suffering from illness

[ad_pod ]Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed after his Burnley pre-match press conference on Thursday, via the club’s official website, that he is hopeful that Ben Davies will be available for the trip to Burnley on Saturday, which would be timely given Danny Rose is reportedly ill.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Davies has been out of action ever since suffering a groin injury in the Carabao Cup against Chelsea last month, but Pochettino confirmed that he is back in training and therefore could be selected for the Premier League clash against Sean Dyche’s men.

The north London outfit’s boss told Spurs TV when asked about Davies and Harry Kane’s fitness: “We need to assess them, there is still one training session more but they are doing well and I hope they will be available.”

The 25-year-old’s return to action would certainly be timely given Football.London’s Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold confirmed via his official Twitter account that Rose has been suffering from illness – which of course could make him a doubt to face the Clarets.

Who gets the nod if Davies and Rose both fine?

It would be a tough decision for Pochettino.

Would you rather your club won the Premier League or Champions League? In the video below, Pl>ymaker FC’s Matty believes English clubs have already decided…

The fact that the former has been injured and the latter has just been ill would suggest that the Argentine would be taking less of a risk if he opted to go with the England international however, and he has arguably been in much better form than his Welsh teammate in recent months.

The 28-year-old has the quality to really hurt Burnley from an attacking point of view at Turf Moor, while he has the tenacity to deal with anything the hosts might throw at him when he is defending as Tottenham look to stay in the Premier League title race by picking up another crucial three points.

Newcastle target Samaris set to leave Benfica this summer

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United will attempt to sign Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris again in the summer after they failed with a move in the January transfer window, per Record via Sport Witness.

Samaris’ contract expires at the end of the season and Rafael Benitez’s side could well get themselves a bargain in the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

Samaris was a target of the Magpies in January but a proposed deal, that would have seen him sign an initial short-term contract before committing to longer terms in the summer, fell through.

The report claims that the 29-year-old was unsure if he would actually have a club beyond the end of the season so decided to reject the proposal.

Newcastle signed Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United and Antonio Barreca on loan from AS Monaco last month.

And Samaris – who has played just six games in the Portuguese top-flight all season – can now begin negotiations with foreign clubs, with his deal soon due to end.

Newcastle, then, have the opportunity to finally get the signing over the line, with Record claiming that he will almost certainly be allowed to leave Benfica.

Patience pays off

Benitez and owner Mike Ashley may have played something of a blinder here.

Fresh from bolstering their squad at the turn of the year, the opportunity arises to do a deal for a long-term target that will ultimately cost them nothing at all.

Of course, it cannot be known if this was the plan all along – hence the convoluted offer presented to Samaris – but bringing him in when the summer window opens makes all the sense in the world.

Newcastle may well have to secure their Premier League survival first – they are currently 16th, just one point above the relegation zone.

But if they do just that, it would be a surprise if Samaris did not end up wearing black and white from the 2019-20 season.
