Sheffield Wednesday have been heavily linked to Julian Borner by German football website nw.de.

The site are reporting that the defender will cut his contract with Armenia Bielefeld short in order to move to Hillsborough on a free transfer.

Desperate for defenders

The Owls have made it no secret that they are pursuing a defender this summer. The links to Borner come after the club had also been reportedly interested in Michael Hector and Jordan Willis.

With Hector now a target for Fulham, his return to Yorkshire is looking less and less likely as the days go by.

Borner is a no-nonsense centre-half who will be physically dominant in the Championship. Standing at 6 ft 2 inches the German wins on average 4.9 aerial duels per game and has scored three goals in 25 appearances this season.

Buying from Germany

Buying players from Germany has been an emerging trend in the Championship in recent years but the Owls will want to be careful when picking out targets from the Bundesliga and German second tier.

For Norwich it worked wonders as the likes of Moritz Leitner, Onel Hernandez and Cristopher Zimmerman all played massive parts in the Canaries promotion this season.

In other instances, players who seemed like safe bets brought in from Germany have flopped massively. Leeds’ acquisitions of Felix Wiedwald and Pierre-Michel Lassoga looked to be great business at the time, but both players didn’t impress upon their arrivals in England.

Signing a defender from a team who have conceded 50 goals in the 2.Bundesliga this season may not be the best move for Wednesday.

وأوضح التقرير أن مجلس الإدارة في ريال مدريد، يرى أن قصة البرتغالي مع ريال مدريد قد انتهت بالفعل.

According to Birmingham Live, Nuno Santo has a desire to continue working with a reasonably small group of players next season, which hints Wolves could avoid doing much business in the transfer market.

Wolves have done some fantastic recruitment over the last two years, largely thanks to super agent Jorge Mendes who has managed to pull off remarkable deals. One of those was the incredible coup of Ruben Neves, of course.

But with the transfer window fast approaching, he may have to dip his toes into the water again if they are to compete further next term.

Birmingham Live are reporting that Wolves boss Nuno is keen to add to the playing staff but wants to keep his squad at a reasonably small level.

In recent weeks, Adama Traore, Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa have all been reported as players who could leave the club, per The Mirror. As such, replacements may be looked at over the summer.

Huge mistake if squad is kept small

Wolves’ lack of depth is no secret but if Nuno has desires of keeping his squad small then he’d be making a considerable error.

As much as it would keep players happy, competition for places is always healthy and there has been barely any of that at Molineux in 2018/19.

The Midlands club have been incredibly lucky with injuries but should one of their major players face a spell on the sidelines next season then they could be in huge bother if they don’t have capable backup players.

With Conor Coady playing every minute of the campaign and Joao Moutinho nearing the age of 33, it’s difficult to envisage them playing as much football as they have this season next campaign.

It’s been some time since Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, and it’s still surprising that Divock Origi was the hero on the night.

The Belgian striker’s two goals will go down in club folklore as the Reds overcame a 3-0 deficit against the Champions League favourites to progress to their second consecutive Champions League final in what was Origi’s finest hour in the historic red of Liverpool, and his victims have taken notice.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona sees Origi as a potential summer target as the Catalan club look for backup to Luis Suarez next season, and with the attacker’s contract expiring on Merseyside in 2020, the La Liga champions might be able to lure the former Lille striker.

Following his heroics for Liverpool, it will be hard for fans to see Origi leave the club this summer, especially to the team the striker etched his name into Reds history against. But, at the end of the day it’s still Barcelona, one of the few sides in the world every player aspires to play for, and Jurgen Klopp might find it hard to keep hold of the forward if a bid comes in.

With options to the Liverpool first-team hard to come by this season, Origi might find better opportunities for minutes in Barcelona, with the report stating that the Belgian would be used as a direct replacement for Suarez if he was to join, and for the 23-year-old, this could be an offer too good to turn down.

With the Champions League final edging ever closer, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool head into the showpiece game against Tottenham as favourites.

And, in an added boost for the Reds before the clash, it was confirmed via the club’s official website that Roberto Firmino has now returned to first-team training this week.

The Brazilian has spearheaded an electric attacking trio alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane this season, but after suffering a groin injury, was ruled out of the side’s last three games.

Despite the prospect of his imminent return ahead of the side’s biggest game since last year’s Champions League final against Real Madrid, some Liverpool fans on social media questioned whether Firmino should even be put straight into the starting line-up.

They felt that the 27-year-old’s presence off the substitute’s bench could be a game-changer for the Reds, and would add some serious firepower in the closing stages of the game.

Some Liverpool supporters appeared to clamour for Klopp to choose the same starting line-up that produced that miraculous 4-0 comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final at Anfield.

It has been a roller-coaster of a year to be a Sheffield Wednesday supporter, hasn’t it?

After witnessing their side suffer an appalling start to the 2018/19 campaign under Jos Luhukay, the Hillsborough faithful would have been very concerned about the prospect of being dragged into a relegation battle.

Yet with the club dropping like a stone in the Championship standings, chairman Dejphon Chansiri made the crucial call to sack the Portuguese boss in December with Steve Bruce being brought in to steady the ship.

Having done just that by securing a 12th place finish earlier this month, the 58-year-old will be looking to launch a sustained push for promotion next season.

Yet in order to achieve this, Bruce simply must get his recruitment spot on this summer.

Although it is fair to say that the Owls need to make improvements in several positions in the transfer market, their number one priority must be to sign a winger who has the potential to set the Championship alight.

With both George Boyd and Marco Matias scheduled to leave the club next month when their contracts expire, Bruce should turn his attention to securing the services of one of Swiss football’s most exciting players.

According to Football Insider, the Owls are reportedly interested in signing Benjamin Kololli from FC Zurich after being impressed by the nature of the 27-year-old’s performances.

A fantastic technician, the £2.48m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) has arguably been Stadtclub’s most important player this season as, without him, they could have easily suffered an embarrassing relegation to the Challenge League.

Yet with Kololli managing to fire in a spectacular total of 14 goals in all competitions whilst also providing six assists, Zurich managed to secure their stay in Switzerland’s top division.

Clearly a special player, the 27-year-old would arguably be an upgrade on Adam Reach who despite being brilliant on his day, does tend to drift in and out of games for the Owls.

Therefore, if the Kololli is indeed available this summer, Wednesday must do everything they possibly can to convince him to make the switch to West Yorkshire as he could prove to be the missing piece in Bruce’s jigsaw.
