QPR: How big a blow would a January exit for Ryan Manning be to the R’s?

Given the circumstances, QPR are having a pretty impressive season with a number of players standing out for the Londoners.

Mark Warburton stepped into the hotseat back in May and had to set about overturning the fortunes of a side who were in misery under Steve McClaren. The R’s won just one of McClaren’s last 15 Championship games and ended the campaign in 19th place.

Additionally, the former Brentford coach had to deal with the departure of Luke Freeman to Sheffield United, while also making 14 new signings in his first transfer window as R’s boss – quite the overhaul.

Despite that, Warburton has worked wonders with the likes of Eberechi Eze, Jordan Hugill, Nahki Wells and Ryan Manning, all of whom have stepped up to the plate to guide QPR into 5th – just three points off the top.

However, the latter of those names in Manning has been linked with a move away. Southampton are reportedly interested in a January move for the left-back at a cut-price fee, with his contract set to expire next summer, while Newcastle are also keeping tabs on the situation.

So, how big a blow for QPR would a winter exit for the Irishman be? Football FanCast’s writers have their say…

Billy Meyers

“I think it would be a monumental blow for QPR to lose Manning at any time, let alone January.  The 23-year-old has provided one goal and three assists in the Championship, playing every possible minute of the campaign under Warburton.

“Aside from what he offers the R’s, what is just as concerning as the Premier League interest in Manning is the lack of options at left-back behind him – it is no wonder he has played every minute of the season.

“QPR are in the playoff places as things stand, and are well in the midst of a promotion charge if their early season form is anything to go by.  Losing such a key player in Manning midway through what is looking like an exciting season would be a cruel blow, due to what he offers the side and the distinct lack of a ready-made replacement.”

Charles Jones

“Manning would be a huge miss for QPR if he was poached by a Premier League side in January. Contributing to four goals in 13 games from left-back is fantastic, but the fact that he’s played every single minute in the league tells you all you need to know about how important he is.

“Warburton clearly has him earmarked as his first-choice in that position, and with QPR flying high at the moment you wouldn’t want to change anything about that team at the moment. Whether he goes or not remains to be seen, but it could change the course of the R’s season if he went.”

VJ “Make no mistake about it, for a team looking on course for a promotion battle this season, QPR losing Manning in January would be a devastating blow. The 23-year-old has been a key cog in the machine for the Hoops, providing one goals and three assists this season – a particularly impressive number considering he is a left-back. “As per Whoscored, his average match rating of 7.21 is the second-highest of any QPR player this season, and is a testament to just how much of a consistent performer he has been for Warburton’s side. Naturally, his displays have attracted interest from the top-flight of English football, but losing him midway through the season could threaten to derail the Championship outfit’s promotion push.” Kealan Hughes “Manning has played well this season but he isn’t irreplaceable, as Warburton has already proved he is able to overcome an important player leaving after Freeman joined Sheffield United in the summer.“Whilst the left-back has shown effective balance to his play with 2.3 tackles per game, as well as contributing a goal and three assists, he doesn’t exactly fit QPR’s passing style, with the R’s averaging 54% possession in the Championship so far.“That is highlighted by his personal pass accuracy of 70.6%, which means that his possible departure could allow Warburton to bring in a better ball player, particularly as the club is likely to fetch a decent fee for the 23-year-old even despite his contract situation, such is his great form this campaign.”

Barcelona’s interest in Sensi doesn’t make sense for the club

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The winter transfer window is slowly but surely getting closer and teams are already on the lookout for potential reinforcements come January next year.

Barcelona, just like many other big teams, had quite a busy summer – many players joined and many departed the club but it seems the Blaugrana are not done spending just yet.

In fact, according to Sport, the Catalan giants have taken great interest in Inter Milan’s 24-year-old midfielder, Stefano Sensi.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Sensi was actually already introduced to the Camp Nou crowd earlier this season when the Nerazzurri visited Catalonia on the second matchday of the Champions League and it seems that he left quite an impression.

The same source claims that Barcelona are big fans of the player and that they would be looking to lure him away from Inter.

As Sport mention, Sensi definitely is a big star in making – he’s still young but already well-developed and more importantly, it seems that he would suit the Blaugrana quite nicely with his skill set.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

But looking strictly at their squad and their needs, do Barcelona really have to pursue another midfielder?

Let’s not forget that their middle of the pitch is already overbooked as it is – seeing how there are eight players fighting for three spots – and as a direct result of that, the likes of Carles Alena and Riqui Puig can’t even get a sniff of any first-team action and even stars like Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal have been struggling to get minutes.

Surely the focus of their future transfers should be in alternative positions; adding another midfielder can only be a step in the wrong direction.

If anything, this only raises additional questions about their transfer policy as a whole.

Earlier they were also linked with a new striker despite buying Antoine Griezmann just months ago and now they want to add more midfielders into a squad that already has one too many.

All of this suggests there’s no clear plan to follow and if true, it could also pose quite a lot of trouble for the Catalans moving forward.

For all the obvious qualities Sensi possesses, he is not the one they should be targeting come winter transfer window.

Arsenal fans celebrate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s half-century milestone

Although Arsenal’s on-field form has been considerably suffering as of late – with the Gunners having won just four of their first 11 league fixtures – the milestone of 50 goals for Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang has led to a number of the club’s fanbase praising the Gabonese forward.

Aubameyang has scored eight Premier League goals so far in the current campaign to reach the 50-mark in all competitions for the north London side, with 40 league goals alongside nine in the Europa League and one in the FA Cup giving the former Borrusia Dortmund man his half-century.

Despite ongoing issues at the club – including Granit Xhaka’s confrontation with fans alongside reports of Unai Emery having just one month to save his job – the consistent form of Aubemayang will be seen as a source of huge relief to the club.

If the Gunners want to get their fortunes back on track, it is likely that the striker will be at the heart of any effort to revive their domestic form.

Here are some of the best reactions to Aubameyang’s goalscoring milestone for Arsenal.

Crystal Palace: Is Steve Parish making the right call with Roy Hodgson contract talks?

According to The Daily Mail, Crystal Palace have entered talks with Roy Hodgson over a new contract.

The former England manager’s current terms at Selhurst Park are set to expire at the end of the season, and talks are underway over an extension which would see Hodgson reach his 73rd birthday while in charge of the south Londoners.

Hodgson surpassed Bobby Robson’s record as the Premier League’s oldest ever manager back in February, and Palace chairman Steve Parish revealed to The Daily Mail that he wants the former Liverpool manager to stay on at the club.

The Eagles have fared quite well since Hodgson replaced Frank de Boer back in September 2017, helping keep the club in the top-flight after their awful start under the Dutchman, before overseeing the south Londoners’ best-ever Premier League points total from a 38-game campaign in 2018/19 – Palace finished with 49 points.

So, is Parish making the right decision in entering contract talks with Hodgson?

Billy Meyers

“I think there is more to this decision than meets the eye. Parish is keen to focus on revamping Palace’s academy with plans to pump £15m-£20m into doing just that, while the Eagles chief also has the £100m redevelopment of Selhurst Park on his mind – both of those projects will be expensive, and the money earned from Premier League survival will surely be crucial.

“In that respect, there is nothing more important than having someone in charge who can keep Palace in the top-flight, something that Hodgson has proven to be well capable of doing – because of this, a new contract for the 72-year-old is the right decision, for now.”

Kealan Hughes

“The club is arguably the most stable it has been at any point since getting back into the Premier League in 2013, and Hodgson is doing a good job on limited resources.

“He gets the best out of the players at his disposal and that is crucial at a club like Crystal Palace. With Hodgson in charge they have the chance to lay the foundations to progress, and despite lacking in certain areas – with just 10 goals in 11 league games – there are signs that this could be a successful campaign.

“The club is right to extend his contract but they have to start preparing for life without Hodgson soon, and that means stepping up recruitment and increasing the appeal, so that they don’t end up with another unsuitable appointment like Frank de Boer.”

Charles Jones

“I think that Palace would be doing the right thing if they were to offer Hodgson a new deal. Despite being 72 years of age, the former England manager may be the best gaffer available to help the London club achieve their aspirations.

“All you have to do is look at the league table right now, and you’ll have your answer. Palace sit just two points off of fifth place, and they look like they could achieve a top half finish this term.

“His age shouldn’t get in the way of how well he’s doing, and Palace would be very smart to give their manager a new deal.”

VJ

“As the saying goes, age is just a number. And for Hodgson, that really is the case. The 72-year-old has been around the block multiple times, managing international teams like Switzerland and England, and taking charge of club sides like Fulham and Crystal Palace. His work with the latter in particular has been nothing short of remarkable, particularly given their lack of spending.

“In the summer transfer window, the Eagles paid just £6.84m for their new signings according to Transfermarkt. Despite having no big-money arrivals, Hodgson has steered the ship superbly, leading them to ninth in the Premier League after 11 games – above the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham. So whilst he may be getting on a bit, the former Three Lions boss has more than proven he is the man for the job at Selhurst Park.”

Leicester fortunate to have Ricardo Pereira, claims Jason Cundy

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

It’s the curse of punching above your weight in the Premier League.

As soon as you start doing well, people just want to tear you apart and flog off your best pieces to someone else. That’s exactly the situation that Leicester City right-back Ricardo Pereira finds himself in after recent comments by Jason Cundy.

What’s he said?

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Drive, former Tottenham Hotspur defender Cundy spoke about just how well he’s been playing not just this season, but in the past as well, and how bigger clubs should be looking at going after him.

“He’s a perfect example of what a modern day right-back is, they’re not just a defender. Leicester are incredibly fortunate to have him. That’s the player that Spurs should be having at right-back”.

Giving yourself a choice

This touches on a similar theme we discussed on FFC last week about Brendan Rodgers when he was being talked about as possibly taking over at Arsenal at some point in the future.

If Leicester are serious about their future and turning the club into one of the established ‘big sides’ in the Premier League, they need to lock down as many of these players down on long term contracts as possible, with the right-back being chief amongst them.

We’ve spoken before about how important someone like Pereira has been to the Foxes. However, if they want to keep him away from the prying eyes, they should give him a new contract to either keep him here for the foreseeable future, or at the very least so that anyone who does want to sign him, has to fork out an extortionate fee in the same way Manchester United did for Harry Maguire in the summer.

Either way it gives them a little bit of leeway when it comes to navigating the future of the team, a backup plan if you will.

Leicester have shown that they can easily substitute their ‘top players’ over the years if they have to, like replacing N’Golo Kante with Wilfred Ndidi so whilst they have a star on their hands in Pereira, at least they give themselves a bit of a chance to find the next one with plenty of funds at their disposal.

Whilst his contract runs out in 2023, and he’s currently on £70k per week (via SportRac), neither of them should be a deterrent to offering up a new deal. This past summer, Fulham signed Tom Cairney and Aleksandar Mitrovic to new deals even though their terms at the time ran out in 2023.

An increase in salary would be a great way of sweetening the deal and rewarding him for his performances since he signed. Whether his future is at the King Power or elsewhere, at least give yourself a little bit more power when the time does come around.
