Angels Continue Busy November With Yusei Kikuchi Deal

The MLB's most active team in free agency so far hasn't been the New York Yankees or the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the L.A. area's other team, the Angels. General manager Perry Minasian has been actively adding pieces as the team seeks to snap its MLB-worst playoff drought, which dates back to 2014. The latest addition, according to Jon Heyman of the : veteran left-handed starting pitcher Yukei Kikuchi.

Kikuchi heads to L.A. on a three-year, $63 million deal, Heyman reports. The one-time All-Star began the 2024 season with the Toronto Blue Jays before being dealt to the Houston Astros at the trade deadline.

Kikuchi finished 2024 with a 9–10 record and 4.05 ERA but was excellent after his move to the Astros, posting a 5–1 record and 2.7 ERA in 10 starts. His 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings in Houston would have been his highest mark across a full season.

After beginning his career in Japan, Kikuchi spent his first three MLB seasons with the Seattle Mariners, making his only All-Star Game in 2021.

The Angels have been aggressive throughout the offseason. They dealt for Atlanta Braves slugger Jorge Soler in late October, and have signed catcher Travis d'Arnaud, right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks and infielder Kevin Newman among others so far.

In its first season after losing Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers, the Angels finished at the bottom of the AL West at 63–99, the second-worst record in the American League in 2024.

MLB Fans Roast White Sox Over Anticlimactic New Stadium Name Announcement

For the last eight years, the home of the Chicago White Sox has carried the decidedly conventional corporate name of Guaranteed Rate Field.

In 2025, however, the park will have a radical new moniker: Field.

That's per an announcement from the White Sox Tuesday evening—a change that lines up with Guaranteed Rate's July rebrand, but one that was roundly mocked by fans and rivals of a team coming off a record-breaking 41-121 season.

If you want to gaze into the souls of baseball fans at rock bottom, check out the social media post in which Chicago announced the change.

Jokes about the meaning of the "guarantee" being removed from the park's name abounded…

…as did all your favorite memes denoting a microscopic change.

The White Sox will begin life at Rate Field on March 27 against the Los Angeles Angels. Whether their rate of winning can creep above .253 remains to be seen.

Arsenal star pictured training this week alongside teammates after injury lay-off

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is welcoming his Gunners squad back to training in London Colney ahead of his side’s crucial derby against Tottenham this weekend.

The face-off carries significant weight in this year’s Premier League title race, with Arsenal looking to maintain their position at the summit while Tottenham seek to disrupt their neighbours’ title aspirations.

Arsenal enter the match off a 2-2 draw at Sunderland, which ended their 10-match winning run in all competitions and eight-game run without conceding a single goal.

Arsenal 3-0 Nottingham Forest

Athletic Bilbao 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal 1-1 Man City

Port Vale 0-2 Arsenal

Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal 2-0 Olympiacos

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

Fulham 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal 4-0 Atlético Madrid

Arsenal 1-0 Crystal Palace

Arsenal 2-0 Brighton

Burnley 0-2 Arsenal

Slavia Prague 0-3 Arsenal

Sunderland 2-2 Arsenal

The Gunners have been in exceptional form this season, averaging over two goals per match and establishing themselves as the team to beat. Their defensive prowess has been particularly impressive, conceding just five goals so far and boasting the best defence in all of Europe’s top five leagues.

Fifth-place Spurs drew 2-2 with Man United in their last outing and currently hold the best away record in the Premier League with 13 points won from a possible 15, having scored the joint-most goals (12) and conceded the fewest (three) on their travels (NBC Sports).

Despite having won just three times at Arsenal since the Premier League’s inception, this remarkable away form makes them dangerous opponents and Arteta will be very aware of the threat Thomas Frank’s side pose.

Arsenal also face a real selection headache, with star defender Gabriel Magalhaes poised to be out for at least a month after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with Brazil.

Arteta’s attacking depth faces a severe test heading into the derby too, with multiple forwards battling to prove their fitness. Viktor Gyokeres is still a doubt for the match, with little certainty around Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann revealed that Havertz had a “minor relapse” of his knee injury and is expected to return “towards the end of the year”, casting doubt on his involvement in this weekend’s derby.

Captain Martin Odegaard’s situation remains unclear as well. Norway boss Stale Solbakken said Odegaard is “some distance away”, but the player himself stated the injury is “starting to look better” and will hopefully be back soon (TV2).

Noni Madueke was actually close to making the Sunderland squad, so he could well return to the fold for Spurs, but the game comes too soon for striker Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel Jesus pictured in Arsenal training with teammates after lay-off

The Brazilian hasn’t played a single minute since rupturing his ACL in an FA Cup defeat to Man United at the start of the year, and reports suggest he’ll be the last in a long line of Arsenal attackers to return from injury (Simon Collings).

However, Jesus is back in Arsenal first-team training, with football.london relaying that the 28-year-old was pictured taking part in a session this week alongside Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ben White.

The former Man City star, once he makes his comeback, is set to play a role under Arteta this season, despite reports of a potential January exit.

Arteta has called Jesus an ‘unpredictable’ weapon he can’t wait to call upon, while the player himself is adamant that he’s not going anywhere.

It is unclear when Jesus will be available for full selection again, but it could well be soon given he’s back with the squad.

PCB clears Pakistan to play UAE; says Pycroft apologised

The Pakistan players remained at the hotel beyond the scheduled departure time until they were given the go-ahead by the PCB from Lahore to leave for the venue

The ICC has retained former Zimbabwe batter Andy Pycroft as the match referee for Pakistan’s must-win fixture against UAE in the Asia Cup on Wednesday. It did so despite the PCB’s insistence on having him removed, an insistence which eventually delayed the start of the game by an hour; there had been worries through the day that Pakistan may pull out of the game and tournament altogether. The match eventually began, the PCB claiming Pycroft apologised for the “miscommunication” in the India-Pakistan game on Sunday that led to the handshake controversy. The PCB issued the apology statement minutes before the delayed toss at 7pm local time, though by then it had been confirmed that the game was going ahead.”Andy Pycroft had barred the captains of India and Pakistan from shaking hands during their match,” the statement said. “The Pakistan Cricket Board had strongly reacted to Andy Pycroft’s actions. Andy Pycroft termed the September 14 incident a result of miscommunication and apologised. The ICC has expressed its willingness to conduct an inquiry into the code of conduct violation that occurred during the September 14 match.”Once the match between Pakistan and UAE had begun, the PCB and ACC head Mohsin Naqvi held a press conference where he said there had been a “crisis” following the India-Pakistan match on September 14. “We requested the ICC to do an inquiry on the code of conduct violations on 14th September,” he said. “Politics and cricket shouldn’t be mixed. Leave cricket as a sport.”It brought to an end days of uncertainty during which Pakistan cancelled their pre-game press conference on Tuesday, though the subsequent training session went ahead as planned. Later that evening, around midnight, the PCB issued a statement that said “consultations were underway” regarding Pakistan’s participation in the Asia Cup as the fallout from the handshake controversy after their loss to India continued. The board said a decision would be taken keeping the “interest of Pakistan” in mind.On Wednesday, there was fevered speculation of what the PCB might do ahead of the game against UAE. The first signs of trouble came in the afternoon, when the Pakistan players were told to stay at their hotel beyond their scheduled departure at 4.30 pm local time. At the same time came news that Naqvi would announce a decision in a press conference in Lahore. Soon it emerged that Naqvi had invited former PCB heads Ramiz Raja and Najam Sethi to Gaddafi Stadium to discuss the situation. The PCB did not expand on what decision they reached but Naqvi eventually announced at 5.45 pm local time that the Pakistan team had been told to leave for the venue. They arrived just before 6.30 pm, with the toss scheduled for 7pm and the start for 7.30 pm.The PCB had blamed Pycroft following the conclusion of Sunday’s clash between India and Pakistan, during which the Indian players refused to shake hands with the Pakistanis at the toss and at the end of the game. Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha skipped the post-match presentation in protest, though the coach Mike Hesson did appear at the post-game press conference. The PCB claimed Pycroft had told Agha that there would be no handshakes at the toss, which it argued in its complaint was in breach not only of the Spirit of Cricket but also of the ICC’s code of conduct regulations. In the complaint to the ICC general manager Wasim Khan, the PCB insisted that he be removed from the remaining Asia Cup fixtures. ESPNcricinfo understands the ICC rejected that request and conveyed it to the board the following day, though discussions between them and the PCB continued.Soon after they put out the statement claiming Pycroft had apologised, the PCB also released a video of the meeting in which Pakistan’s manager Naveed Akram Cheema, captain Agha and coach Hesson are seen talking to Pycroft, with the ICC’s Wasim Khan also in attendance.

Bayern Munich zero in on Nicolas Jackson alternative as young striker leaps ahead of Dusan Vlahovic in list of Harry Kane backup options

German giants Bayern Munich are eyeing Midtjylland striker Franculino Dju for a summer move. The Bundesliga champions see Dju as a potential replacement for Nicolas Jackson, who is currently on loan at the club but is not expected to be signed permanently. Bayern are also monitoring Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic, who is set to become a free agent with his contract expiring this summer.

  • Bayern's interest in Franculino

According to Germany outlet , Bayern are not expected to make any signings in the winter transfer window, even if Sacha Boey departs the club in January. The Bavarians feel their squad is well covered for the remainder of the season and prefer to focus on long-term planning rather than short-term fixes. In the summer, Bayern brought in Jackson on deadline day as a backup to Harry Kane, but despite the forward scoring three goals and providing one assist, the club are not convinced he is worth the €65 million (£56m/$75m) option to buy. As a result, they could allow his loan to expire without activating the clause.

Bayern are instead targeting 21-year-old Midtjylland striker Franculino as backup to Kane. The young forward has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 19 goals and providing three assists in 26 matches, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking prospects. Looking ahead, Bayern are also monitoring Juventus striker Vlahovic as a potential backup to Kane. With the Serbian entering the final year of his contract and possibly available as a free agent next summer, the club view him as a strong long term option to reinforce their frontline. For now, though, Vlahovic remains a secondary plan, with Franculino considered the main target.

  • Bayern's great start to the season

Bayern’s remarkable start to the season has seen them go unbeaten in 16 matches across all competitions, including the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, DFB-Supercup and Champions League. This run is even more impressive considering they sold key attackers such as Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman and Thomas Muller, while also missing out on transfer targets like Nick Woltemade and Rafael Leao.

Despite these setbacks, Vincent Kompany has crafted a clear playing strategy built on perseverance, collective understanding and fluid attacking movements. His system has unlocked the very best of Harry Kane, who has reached extraordinary goalscoring levels. Kane’s strike against Club Brugge in the Champions League took him to 20 goals in just 12 games – an astonishing milestone that neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi achieved at such speed.

  • Bayern's Upamecano headache

Bayern face a challenging task as they work to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, which expires in 2026. The club are under pressure, especially with Real Madrid showing strong interest in the French defender and already initiating contact with his entourage. Bayern hope that  Kompany, who has quickly earned the players’ trust, can help persuade Upamecano to commit his future to the club.

However, they are also preparing for the possibility that he may not renew. Bayern have identified Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential replacement. Schlotterbeck’s contract runs until 2027, but he has remained non-committal about signing an extension, making him a realistic target.

In addition, Bayern are monitoring Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi as alternative options, ensuring they remain well-covered defensively should Upamecano choose to leave.

Bayern action resumes after the International break

Bayern are keen to extend Upamecano’s contract at the earliest, with the defender emerging as a key pillar under Vincent Kompany. Meanwhile, Jackson will look to impress both the manager and the club hierarchy as he pushes to establish himself as the ideal backup option. Kompany would have used the international break to assess his squad depth, plan effective rotations and introduce fresh tactical ideas. With these foundations in place, Bayern remain fully committed to their ambitious target of challenging for and potentially winning the treble this season.

The German champions are set to host St. Pauli as club football resumes after the international break.

Spurs must sell £22m dud who's one of "the worst players at a big six club"

Tottenham Hotspur are adjusting to a more pragmatic tactical style under Thomas Frank. This has caused several contentious talking points to spring up over the past several months.

Yes, Spurs are imperfect, and improvements are needed. But they are also fifth in the Premier League after 11 matches, and have lost only three times.

Goals are being scored, albeit with underlying attacking metrics emphasising the work is needed in creative departments. But then, even this comes with the caveat that Tottenham have been without Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, arguably the two most creative outlets at the club, since before the start of the season.

Yes, more is needed. And Frank will consider across the next two international-break-filled weeks his options across the park, and how he can water the roots of his philosophy while growing his Tottenham garden into something viewed as new and growing, rather than negative and Nuno-esque.

The changes Frank needs to make at Spurs

Tottenham showed spirit and resolve against Manchester United last weekend, and though Richarlison’s late strike was cancelled out at the death by Matthijs de Ligt’s header, the hosts did not crumble but responded after a wretched first half.

That’s a glass-half-full way of looking at it, sure, but Tottenham must take the positives – as Frank did.

However, the Danish tactician needs to iron out the many creases in this squad, and one sure-fire way to start that process is by forgoing the decision to field Djed Spence and Richarlison as a left-sided partnership. Width and dynamism are needed down the flanks, and the out-of-position Spence and technically limited Richarlison don’t work well together.

When Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert connected in the second half, things changed.

Likewise, there must be a wider shift in regard to mentality and confidence. Over the past year, Tottenham have played 20 home games and they have won only three. Much-improved away results and a tougher framework from head to toe have scrubbed away the bitter lower-table position of last year, but there remains a need for more positivity, more fluency and enterprise on the ball.

The forwards need to much do more, yes, but the midfielders have flattered to deceive from this perspective this season, and it’s time for Frank to consider parting with one player who lacks the nuance in his role to thrive and make the system tick.

Frank must drop struggling Spurs star

When Tottenham signed Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in January 2022, initially on loan and then for a fee just shy of £22m, they knew they had landed a talented and multi-faceted midfielder.

And yet he’s falling by the wayside in Frank’s system. The 28-year-old hasn’t fallen, not yet, but his performances are becoming a concern, with analyst Raj Chohan even describing him as a “candidate for worst centre-midfielder at a big six club”.

The conundrum here is two-fold: Bentancur has just signed a new contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, raising his salary considerably to around £120k per week.

But the other angle here is that the Uruguayan just doesn’t work alongside Joao Palhinha, a player who has been regarded by many as one of the best Lilywhites players so far this season, having arrived on a loan deal from Bayern Munich in the summer.

So, if Palhinha has to play, his tough-tackling, protective presence in the middle, Frank must start playing a deep-lying midfielder beside him who can drive play forward with surgical passes. Instead, two pragmatic midfielders have been yoked together in a midfield lacking creativity under a manager who is facing criticisms for a pragmatic style of play.

It is not that difficult to identify the potential problem here, especially when bringing Xavi Simons into the equation, the playmaker yet to adapt to the rigours of the English game, and then addressing again the duel absence of Kulusevski and Maddison.

As per data-led platform FBref, Bentancur actually ranks among the bottom 39% of Premier League midfielders this term for progressive passes per 90, underscoring the issues presented in the build-up. Palhinha, unsurprisingly, does not rank highly himself (bottom 11%).

The decision to start Bentancur from the bench against Man United – ending the South American’s run of six successive Premier League starts – tells of Frank’s awareness about all this, but then Pape Matar Sarr wasn’t at his best on that day in any case, albeit growing into the game after a shaky start, his energy and optimism a nice counterpoint to Palhinha’s ruggedness.

Much to chew on. Lucas Bergvall has the progressiveness to forge a protean partnership with Palhinha in the centre, but the teenager has not yet nailed down a prominent role under Frank.

Bentancur might have signed a new contract recently, but that does not mean he is unsellable. Conversely, this could provide an insight into a longer-term plan; this summer, Atletico Madrid were among those interested in an experienced midfielder whose stock has now risen from a financial vantage.

If Tottenham are to persist with the anchoring presence that is Palhinha, it might not be a bad thing to ship Bentancur and his limitations out. When the injured parties return, the picture will become a whole lot clearer, and Bentancur may well be absent from the view.

Hesson: We were a bit frenzied at the start with the bat and then got squeezed

Pakistan coach feels they have “lost a bit of momentum” at the top after they were reduced to 83 for 7 against India

Wahab: Kuldeep always one step ahead of batters

Pakistan coach Mike Hesson has acknowledged that they were “outplayed” on Sunday in their seven-wicket defeat against India. Speaking after the game, Hesson said Pakistan struggled to come up with answers to India’s spinners, who ended up “squeezing” them, and that Pakistan would have to play better cricket to stay competitive against the best sides.”We were outplayed today,” Hesson said at the press conference. “I don’t think we can hide from that. We didn’t bat well enough. We left ourselves probably 20 or 30 [runs] short, and we all know through those middle overs we got squeezed. Lots to work on against a good bowling attack, but I was pleased the way the guys fought hard in the field albeit with a score that wasn’t enough.”For much of the innings with the bat after Pakistan opted to set a target, they looked as if they might struggle to get to three figures. They found themselves on 83 for 7 in the 17th over, before a cameo at the end from Shaheen Afridi took them to 127.Related

Kuldeep, Axar and Abhishek lead India to thumping win

“Up until the last few matches, Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub had averaged 40 opening the batting, and had done particularly well,” Hesson said. “Saim is a key player for us, and it’s important for any side that we get off to a good start. Four games ago, we were doing quite nicely at the top; we’ve lost a bit of momentum there, but I certainly have confidence in those two to turn it around quickly.”There was a touch of mayhem about the first two overs with the bat for Pakistan. Ayub sliced to point off the first legitimate delivery he faced in what was his second successive golden duck. The incoming Mohammad Haris lashed at Jasprit Bumrah right from the outset, and skied his second ball to square leg. Fakhar Zaman was nearly undone by a yorker later that over, surviving on review after the ball was found to have pitched outside leg stump.”With the bat, we were a little bit frenzied at the start,” Hesson said. “The ball held in the surface, as we expected, but we didn’t respond as well as we would have liked. We were in the game at the end of the powerplay, and then we got squeezed.”2:20

How big is the gulf between India and Pakistan?

Farhan, who had watched the carnage from the other end, found the odd big shot, but it was interspersed with long streaks of dot deliveries. He struck Bumrah for two sixes in the powerplay – the only player to have hit Bumrah for more than one six in a T20I. But 23 of the 44 balls he faced were dots, and as the spinners began to tighten their grip on the game, his effectiveness was diminished.”The more big games you play, the more trust you have in your own game,” Hesson said. “We’ve certainly got some players who’re finding their feet. They want to be in the battle, and we’ll come back stronger in a few days’ time.”Pakistan will have to do that. If results fall the way it is likely, Pakistan’s match against UAE will be almost a knockout game for them to advance to the Super Fours stage. Progression for Hesson’s side will mean another meeting with India next Sunday.”We’ll turn up in three days’ time. We need to play better than we did today with both ball and bat,” Hesson said. “We need to be more disciplined with the ball early on. I was actually really pleased with the way we fought in the field, where we showed a huge amount of character. We’re going to need a lot more of that on Wednesday. If we do that, we’re hopeful of having another crack in the Super 4s, where we’re going to have to play better cricket than we did tonight. I’ve certainly got confidence in this group.”

MLS owners reportedly begin planning for Don Garber’s eventual successor with new committee

MLS owners have reportedly taken their first concrete step toward identifying a successor to Commissioner Don Garber, convening a small, closed-door “succession committee” ahead of last week’s Board of Governors meeting, according to the Sports Business Journal. The group held its initial session with Garber in attendance as it began outlining early plans for the league’s future leadership.

Getty Images SportSuccession committee holds inaugural meeting

A newly formed succession committee held its first closed-door meeting last Wednesday in Palm Beach, Florida, prior to the league’s full Board of Governors gathering the following day, per the SBJ report. The committee — tasked with planning for senior leadership transitions, including Commissioner Don Garber’s eventual replacement — is being co-chaired by LAFC’s Bennett Rosenthal and Columbus Crew’s Jimmy Haslam.

Additional committee members include Jonathan Kraft of the New England Revolution, Oliver Mintzlaff of the New York Red Bulls, and John Ingram of Nashville SC. Garber himself attended the inaugural session, according to the report, underscoring his involvement in the early stages of the succession planning process.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTiming coincides with calendar shift and Garber’s contract

The formation of the succession committee comes at a significant moment for MLS, which recently approved a major shift to a summer-to-spring calendar that will align the league with top European competitions. This calendar change complicates the timing of Garber's current contract, which is scheduled to expire at the end of the 2027 season – a date that would now fall midway through the 2027-28 campaign under the new calendar format.

League officials have not clarified whether Garber's contract expiration date has been adjusted to accommodate this calendar shift. The commissioner, who has led MLS since 1999, has not publicly indicated whether he intends to remain beyond his current agreement.

Getty Images EntertainmentDeputy commissioner's retirement adds context

The succession committee's first meeting occurred just one day after MLS Deputy Commissioner Gary Stevenson announced his plans to retire following next summer's FIFA World Cup.

The succession planning process appears to be part of a comprehensive strategic review that began in late summer 2025, which league spokesperson Dan Courtemanche described as focused on improving the league’s structure.

“Major League Soccer is currently engaged in a comprehensive, league-wide strategic planning process led by Commissioner Garber together with a committee of MLS owners and an external consulting firm,” Courtemanche told SBJ. “This process, which began in late summer 2025, is focused on strengthening the league’s organizational structure and preparing MLS for the opportunities and challenges that come with being a growing sports league.

“Like is the case with most high-performance organizations, this work includes broad, long-term succession planning for senior leadership positions, along with a holistic review of organizational design and operational effectiveness across the league office.”
