Shivkumar, Rasool star with all-round efforts

A wrap of Group C games in the fifth round of the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy

ScorecardServices captain Soumik Chatterjee scored a century to give his team the first-innings lead against Kerala in Delhi. Chatterjee, who opened the innings and batted 313 deliveries for 107, was supported by useful contributions from the rest of Services batsmen, most notably Yashpal Singh, who made 89.The fight for the first-innings lead had got tense at one stage, when Services were 264 for 5 as Chatterjee fell, but the lower-order batsmen secured a 21-run advantage. Sandeep Warrier took 4 for 86 in his second first-class game for Kerala. The visitors were 9 for 0 at stumps, trailing Services by 12 runs.
ScorecardA day after scoring his maiden first-class century to lead Andhra to a commanding total, Duvvarapu Shivkumar claimed his first five-wicket haul to take his team to the verge of securing a significant first-innings lead. Shivkumar’s 6 for 41 reduced Goa to 285 for 9, still behind Andhra by 108 runs. The third day in Visakhapatnam began with Goa on 72 for 1, and they lost Sagun Kamat after only one run was scored. Thereafter, Goa had only one substantial stand – 90 between Ravikant Shukla and Reagan Pinto for the fifth wicket. Shukla ended the day unbeaten on 84 but watched Shivkumar cut through his team-mates at the other end. Goa scored only 213 runs in the day.
ScorecardCenturies from Ian Dev Singh and Parvez Rasool built Jammu & Kashmir a huge lead on the third day in Guwahati, and three early wickets in Assam’s improbable chase gave the visitors a good chance of an outright victory.J&K began the third morning on 1 for 0, with a lead of 159. Ian Dev went on to make 118, and Rasool continued his excellent match by hammering an unbeaten 120 off 106 deliveries. He had made 67 in J&K’s first innings and also taken 7 for 41 to dismiss Assam for 165. J&K scored 318 for 5 before declaring, setting Assam a target of 476.Ram Dayal struck two blows with the new ball for J&K before Assam had even scored, and Ian Dev picked up a third wicket. Assam go into the final day with seven wickets in hand to try and prevent an outright defeat.
ScorecardHimachal Pradesh resumed their first innings on 111 for 5 on the second morning and were dismissed for 260, 181 runs behind Tripura. Manisankar Murasingh and Ranadutta finished with four wickets each.In their second innings, Tripura lost their first four wickets for 13 runs but Abbas Ali steadied the innings with a half-century. By stumps they were ahead by 297 with five wickets in hand. An early declaration on the final day could give Tripura enough time to press for an outright win.

Mohsin keeps players on their toes

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s interim coach, has said he has ensured the Pakistan players understand they can’t be complacent by letting them know there there is plenty of talent waiting in the wings

Umar Farooq12-Nov-2011Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s interim coach, has said he has told his players that, given the bench strength in the national team, they can’t be complacent and must perform to maintain their place.”For me, every player in the 16-man squad is a star,” Mohsin told ESPNcricinfo. “And obviously each one is brimming with talent but there is a factor keeping them on their toes – that is a sense that they have earned their place.”As the chief selector, my top priority was to make sure there was a backup for every spot; this is how you can get results. I wanted to instill that sense among the players and wanted them to be on their toes by building depth for every spot and making them realise that if they don’t perform, there is someone else who can replace them.”Pakistan are especially deep when it comes to the middle and lower-middle order, with the likes of Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Asad Shafiq and Shoaib Malik competing for a couple of places in the line-up. “This situation isn’t a coincidence, it has actually has been created,” Mohsin said. “It means we have a tough time deciding the final XI but this is a positive for us.”This situation keeps the players from becoming complacent as they have to perform to stay in the team. If someone sits out, it doesn’t mean he is not good but it’s a testing time for him. He obviously will be given a chance [eventually] and the break could help him build his mental toughness – he will realise the value of the opportunity [to play for Pakistan].”Mohsin was named the team’s interim coach for Pakistan’s “home” series against Sri Lanka’s in the UAE in early October; he replaced Waqar Younis, who quit over health reasons. Pakistan won the Test series 1-0, and won the opening ODI on Friday in clinical fashion. The PCB recently decided to let Mohsin continue as interim coach for the series against Bangladesh, which starts later this month. The PCB said the decision was taken as a full-time coach had not yet been identified.”It’s a privilege,” Mohsin said on coaching Pakistan. “Though it’s a challenging job, I have coped well and results are there. I feel any work that is done sincerely gives you fruitful results; I am happy with the job and ready, if the PCB asks me, to be the full-time coach.”Coaching the Pakistan team is not as difficult as it seems. I won’t talk about the past but I felt after taking the charge that the players were lacking in mental toughness and professionalism, despite their immense talent and ability. They are as good as the other top teams but were lacking in technical aspects and figuring out the nature of the problem has helped them to flourish.”

'We believe in each other' – Harbhajan

Harbhajan Singh has said that India’s effort to save this Test from the depths of 5 for 15 showed why they were the No. 1 team

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2010Harbhajan Singh has said that India’s effort to save this Test from the depths of 5 for 15 in their second innings showed why they are the top-ranked Test side in the world. “This is what the No. 1 team can do; anyone can come and perform. We believe in each other. Everyone felt that if Ishant [Sharma] and VVS Laxman can win the game in Mohali, why can’t Harbhajan Singh go out and make 60-odd, and Laxman score 150 for team India and save the game?We have lots of self belief and that’s why we are the No. 1 side.”Harbhajan won the Man-of-the-Match award for his batting exploits, something he never dreamed he would do in a Test. “May be in the one-dayers I thought I can get a chance to go up the order, slog a few, get a quick 50-odd and be the Man of the Match. He also felt that Chris Martin was the real Man of the Match for his devastating spell on the fourth day. “Hats off to this guy (Martin) for he bowled his heart out on this flat wicket. For me he is the Man of the Match; to take five wickets on this pitch was something really special.”Harbhajan has talked in the past about his team-mates have always believed he could get a Test hundred, and they shared his joy after he finally reached the landmark. “Now I know how it feels to get a hundred. I was really thrilled and excited. It helped us save the Test. You must have seen how the players were enjoying each other’s success. When I got my hundred everyone was in the balcony to support me. That was a great sign.”He was effusive in his praise for Laxman. ” toh Laxman hi hai (Laxman is the man for a crisis). I was just supporting him. He was the reason I got my hundred; He kept saying I am batting really well and to concentrate this over, then the next over and then the next. If he was not on the other side, things could have been different. He batted superbly. He was little unlucky with his decision, else he would have got his hundred as well.”Both Laxman and Zaheer Khan fell to poor umpiring decisions today, and Harbhajan was asked his opinion on the Umpire Decision Review System. “As a bowler, I don’t mind if that system comes. We had it in Sri Lanka and I quite liked it as I got couple of wickets. But I am no one to decide on this. Big people decide; my job is to just bowl, bat, and field. That’s the best I can do.”Harbhajan said a lot of the credit for his innings should go to Laxman, who told him what shots to play and what shots not to play. “He told me to not to play on-the-rise shots; that was the only thing I looked to avoid on this pitch. I was just waiting for the right kind of ball in my area where I was comfortable to hit my shots.”The lifeless pitch was reason why India decided not to declare and push for the win. Daniel [Vettori] bowled 35-36 overs to take two wickets. And you saw the replays of them to see what sort of decisions they were. There was nothing in the pitch. We made the right decision of not declaring.”Harbhajan also reiterated his pre-match statements that New Zealand are a good side, saying one bad series doesn’t make them a bad side. “I think it [the performance in Bangladesh] was over-hyped in New Zealand. We also lost to Bangladesh in the World Cup. That doesn’t make us a bad team. When two teams play, one will win and one will lose.”

WAPDA pair amass record 580 for second wicket

A round-up of the fourth day’s action from the ninth round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff06-Dec-2009

Group A

A 580-run stand for the second wicket, a first-class record, between Water and Power Development Authority’s Rafatullah Mohmand and Aamer Sajjad was the highlight of their tame draw against Sui Southern Gas Corporation at the Sheikupura Stadium. Rafatullah, who almost made it to the national squad in 2006, went on to a career-best unbeaten 302 while Sajjad fell 11 short of a triple century as the pair bettered the existing mark of 576 between Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama against India in Colombo. They easily overhauled SSGC’s first-innings total of 466 as WAPDA finished on 671 for 2, picking up three points.Rafatullah, 33, was in the news earlier this year when the ICC barred him from the World cup Qualifiers after he was deemed to have not satisfied the rules to represent Afghanistan. He has now set his sights on making the Pakistan national team. “What happened earlier is behind me and I hope that this triple hundred will help me revive my career as I want to play for Pakistan at the international level,” he told AFP. PCB chairman Ijaz Butt congratulated the pair on their achievement.Habib Bank Limited stretched their lead at the top of the group to 12 points with a five-wicket win over Pakistan Customs at the Diamond Club ground. It wasn’t all smooth for HBL after starting the day 90 runs short of the target; they lost two wickets for the addition of 26 runs, and three more wickets fell before reaching the 143 they needed to win. Both opener Shan Masood and first-innings hero Humayun Farhat made 38 to steer HBL home.Second-placed Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited slipped up, getting no points in their draw against Pakistan International Airlines at Jinnah Stadium. They had slipped to a perilous 133 for 7, an overall lead of 70, but were saved by a 85 from No. 7 Raza Ali Dar. He added 57 for the eighth wicket with Imran Ali and 67 for the ninth with Rizwan Akbar to set PIA an almost impossible target of 210 in little more than a session. Opener Agha Sabir’s 66 took PIA to 119 for 2 in 27 overs before the match was called off.

Group A

It was a draw at the Gaddafi Stadium as well, but a far more exciting one as Khan Research Laboratories came within two wickets of winning against Lahore Shalimar. On a day in which only 81 overs were played, opener Abid Ali (53) and Sohail Idrees (79) resisted for Lahore, but the rest of the top order flopped to keep KRL’s hopes of a victory alive. It required a 50-minute unbeaten 34 from No. 9 Mohammad Saeed, who swung two fours and two sixes despite the need for caution towards the end of the game, to deny KRL the win. Left-arm spinner Nauman Ali was the most effective of the KRL bowlers, collecting the second five-wicket haul of his career.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited pulled off a six-wicket win over Karachi Whites at the United Bank Limited Sports Complex to move into joint fourth position. Karachi started the day at 209 for 3 – a lead of 45 – and lost regular wickets to fold for 338 with left-arm spinner Zohaib Khan taking five wickets. Karachi’s batsmen used up 46.2 overs on the final day in setting ZTBL a target of 174, with less than half the day remaining. Powered by opener Inam-ul-Haq’s 66-ball 72, including five fours and four sixes, ZTBL knocked off the runs in 34.1 overs.

Group B

Nasrullah Khan took 5 for 70 to bowl Islamabad to a 37-run win against Sialkot on a closely-contested final day at the Jinnah Stadium. The day began with Islamabad struggling on 145 for 7 in their second innings and they were soon dismissed for 155, setting Sialkot 255 for victory. Faisal Rasheed was the best Sialkot bowler, taking 5 for 45. Islamabad’s defence, however, got off to a terrific start when their new-ball bowlers, Rauf Akbar and Nasrullah, each dismissed an opener for a duck. Sialkot went for 1 for 2 to 34 for 4 before Mohammad Ayub began to steady the innings with an aggressive half-century. Nasrullah, however, cut through the middle order and wickets fell at regular intervals as Sialkot were dismissed for 217.Faisalabad’s bowling attack dismissed Rawalpindi for 163 in 50 overs during the chase to complete a 181-run victory at the Iqbal Stadium. Defending a target of 345, Ijax Ahmed jnr took 4 for 57 while Ahmed Hayat claimed 3 for 24. Zahid Mansoor’s 37 was the top score for Rawalpindi during a disappointing second innings, which suffered from a lack of partnerships. Earlier in the day, Faisalabad’s lower order rallied to extend their total from 69 for 5 to 202. No. 10 Hayat struck five sixes during his innings of 47 off 39 balls.Lahore Ravi‘s bowlers finished the job they’d started on the third day, skittling Abbottabad cheaply in the second innings, and gave their batsmen enough time to chase down a modest target on the final day in Muridke. Abbottabad began the day on 103 for 7 and were soon shot out for 161, leaving Lahore Ravi a target of only 186. The chase suffered a jolt when Lahore Ravi lost their second and third wickets with the score on 70 but Asif Khan’s half-century and Mohammad Asim’s unbeaten 45 ensured victory by five wickets.Peshawar were always going to struggle to avoid a thrashing on the fourth day and they were dismissed for 197 in the second innings, giving Multan victory by an innings and 124 runs at the Multan Cricket Ground. Peshawar resumed on 147 for 5, still trailing by 174 runs, and Zulfiqar Babar ran through the lower order, finishing with figures of 6 for 37.Group A

Zak Crawley: 'Joe Root was due, now England are ahead of the game'

First-day century rescues England after five-wicket morning to post 302 for 7 at the close

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Feb-2024Joe Root’s return to form was “even more due than before” after a run of low scores, according to his team-mate Zak Crawley, as his brilliant rearguard century on the opening day in Ranchi helped to rescue England from a sticky lunchtime scoreline and put them “ahead of the game” in Crawley’s estimation, at 302 for 7 by the close of play.Root reached the close on 106 not out from 226 balls, having compiled his 31st Test century and his first since the opening day of last summer’s Ashes at Edgbaston. It was his sixth century of the so-called Bazball era, but from 219 balls, was also the slowest by any England batter in that period, and the third-slowest of his entire career.Context, however, was everything for England on a crucial day for their series hopes. After winning the toss and batting first, England’s top-order encountered extravagant seam movement for the new ball, particularly for the debutant quick, Akash Deep, who claimed three wickets in the space of 10 balls. Despite a brace of counterattacking innings from Crawley (42 from 42) and Jonny Bairstow (38 from 35), England were floundering at 112 for 5 when Stokes was trapped lbw by a shooter from Ravindra Jadeja on the stroke of lunch.Thereafter, however, the conditions eased through the afternoon, and Root found the ideal ally for an old-fashioned rebuild in Ben Foakes, with whom he batted through the entire session, in a 113-run stand for the sixth wicket that spanned 44 overs. Tom Hartley and Ollie Robinson then offered crucial support through to the close, to leave England feeling confident about their chances of bouncing back in the series, having slipped to 2-1 down in Rajkot last week.Root’s celebrations on reaching his hundred spoke volumes about his determination to come good in this Test, after a previous highest score of 29 in six innings of the series to date, and having copped a significant amount of criticism for his shot selection in Rajkot, where his infamous reverse-scoop against Jasprit Bumrah proved to be the catalyst for India’s fightback with the ball.Zak Crawley counterattacked after an early life•BCCI

On this occasion, he was back to the basics of his game, with a determination to play in the V, and scarcely a cross-batted stroke at any stage of his innings.”We’re chuffed for him, to be honest,” Crawley said at the close of play. “We never doubted Joe, we just think if he gets couple of lowies, he’s even more due than before, so we fully expected him to go out and get runs in this game. He deserves everything he gets, he works so hard at his game and he always comes good.”He’s probably the only bloke in our team who could have done that knock; he’s that good, he’s our best player and he’s stepped up when we needed him to,” Crawley added. “We needed him to get a score, and he got a score like he’s done for so many years now. He’s just a phenomenal player, one of the best – if not the best – player we’ve ever had for England.”Crawley himself had arguably been England’s stand-out batter across the first three Tests, and though his run-a-ball innings was of a very different ilk to Root’s, it was no less crucial in establishing a footnote on a very tricky morning’s batting. He survived a huge slice of luck on 5, when Deep plucked out his off stump with a no-ball, but resolved to take the attack back to India thereafter, with six fours and a six in the remainder of his stay.”It was nipping a lot and nipping quickly,” Crawley said. “I was trying to bat normally at the start and it was seaming, too difficult. I felt there was one with my name on it. So we had to throw a couple of punches back, and myself and Johnny did that really well actually. Then it got easier, but it was tricky against the spin for the middle-order boys, and they judged that really well. They read the situation and played unbelievably.”Related

What it means for the match situation remains unclear, given how difficult Ranchi’s cracked, plate-y surface had been to read before the start of the contest. The impression is that the extra hardness of the new ball could be crucial in bringing those cracks into play, while any overnight moisture in the surface could be a factor in the morning session. Crawley, however, said he stood by his assertion at the time of his dismissal, that any score north of 300 would put England “ahead of the game”.”Against the seam it [was a new-ball pitch] but it got harder versus the spin,” he added. “The softer ball made it bounce a bit more variably. For seam, it was a lot easier by the end, but I think the spin probably got harder.”It was tricky with the fields they were setting but we just always talk about being present in the moment, playing the situation, and the situation required a bit more caution with that kind of pitch and the variable bounce, and that’s what they delivered.”At other times, we counter-punched but they played it perfectly and read it well. It was tricky to try and get on top of them with that field, and they just knocked it around and played it perfectly.”

Harmanpreet Kaur out of WBBL with back issue

She was initially supposed to miss only the first two games because of her international commitments

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Oct-2022Melbourne Renegades allrounder Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the ongoing season of the WBBL with a back issue.”Harmanpreet was fantastic for us last season and we were looking forward to having her as part of our squad again this year, but unfortunately she has been ruled out through injury,” James Rosengarten, Renegades’ general manager, said.Harmanpreet, the India captain, was initially supposed to miss only the first two games because of her international commitments, with India playing in – and winning – the women’s Asia Cup final. Simon Helmot, the Renegades coach, was confident of her joining the side for the rest of the campaign and had said that her workload would be carefully monitored after she reached Australia.England batter Eve Jones was signed as an overseas replacement last week.”Eve will stay on with our squad for at least the next couple of matches, as we work through the best strategy for our squad for the remainder of the tournament,” Rosengarten said.Harmanpreet was named Player of the Tournament last season after scoring 406 runs at a strike rate of 130.96, in addition to taking 15 wickets in 13 games. Renegades lost the Challenger against Adelaide Strikers and missed out on a chance to make the final. In the ongoing season, they have one win from two games so far.Harmanpreet’s India team-mate Smriti Mandhana had earlier withdrawn from this season of the WBBL to manage her workload.

Sisanda Magala ruled out of Ireland tour with ankle injury

His “projected recovery time” is three to four weeks, according to CSA

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jul-2021South Africa fast bowler Sisanda Magala has been ruled out of the Ireland tour with an injury to his left ankle. Magala sustained the injury while preparing for the Ireland tour in Grenada, and his “projected recovery time” is three to four weeks, according to a CSA release.Beuran Hendricks has been retained from the West Indies tour, the release further confirmed, and stated the squad had arrived “safely” in Dublin for their tour comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is, starting July 11.The three ODIs and first T20I will be played in Dublin and the last two T20Is in Belfast.Magala made his international debut earlier this year in the T20I series against Pakistan at home and has picked three wickets in four T20Is so far. In May earlier this year, he was named the T20 challenge cricketer of the season at CSA’s annual awards ceremony.

'Times I've felt down, felt like giving up at times' – Deandra Dottin

The West Indies allrounder has battled back from a serious shoulder injury to feature at the T20 World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Feb-2020West Indies allrounder Deandra Dottin was on the verge of quitting the game as she battled to recovery from shoulder sugery.Dottin’s last international was a year ago and she underwent surgery in June but initially struggled with the rehabilitation, reaching the point where she considered whether she could ever be able to make a comeback. She credits advice from former West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, who suffered a similar injury, as key to keeping her motivated.”I had to find means and ways to keep on a positive side and have some extra confidence. Times I’ve felt down, felt like giving up at times,” she said at the West Indies’ media day before the T20 World Cup. “Basically, I did a lot of praying. Also having my best friend just text or call to keep me motivated, giving me that belief to continue to keep working to get back on track.”There were times when I felt like I was getting somewhere, then it was points where I felt like I was taking 50 steps back. So close to point where I said that’s it, I didn’t think I would get back with West Indies or back playing any cricket at all. I didn’t even think that I’d be able to use my shoulder like I used to. I was so close to saying I think I should call it a day.”But speaking to Merissa Aguilleira it gave me that extra boost. I actually had a conversation with Alzarri Joseph who had similar injury to me and he felt the same way, but he kept pushing and he gave me some tips on how to keep positive.”Dottin, who holds the record for the fastest hundred in women’s T20Is with her 38-ball effort against South Africa at the 2010 T20 World Cup, batting as low as No. 6, will be a vital cog in the West Indies side as they look to overturn a poor run of form and be contenders for the title they won in 2016.With the ball, Dottin has 59 wickets at 18.08 in T20Is with a best of 5 for 5 and is confident she will be able to play an all-round role.”In terms of bowling, it [the injury] had a big impact, but it’s coming along good and I think my shoulder is actually feeling stronger than it was before the injury. All in all, in thank god and the people who helped me. Today I’m here which I’m thankful for.”

'No intention of rubbishing Qayyum report' – PCB chief

The Pakistan board has admitted it could’ve handled better the circumstances around the appointment of its new cricket committee

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Nov-2018The PCB has admitted it could’ve handled better the circumstances around the appointment of Mohsin Khan as the head of their new cricket committee. What should’ve been an early win in Ehsan Mani’s new tenure as board chairman turned instead into a distraction about the Qayyum report on match-fixing.Comments by Mani and then Mohsin on the day of the announcement suggested that the board had disowned the report in a bid to ensure that Mohsin would work with Wasim Akram, also inducted to the committee; the former has repeatedly insisted he won’t work with players tainted by corruption, as he considered the latter to be.That, the PCB has now clarified, was very much not the intention. “Certainly there was no intention of rubbishing the report in any shape or form,” Mani told ESPNcricinfo. “The Qayyum report is still a PCB document. I was involved in presenting it to the ICC.”Mani and his chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed held an extensive meeting with Mohsin to convince him to work with Akram, after which Mohsin said he was 99% convinced that the charges on players were not “authentic”.”There is certainly some baggage and we could’ve handled that better,” Mani said.Mani was eager to point out that the Qayyum Report had not brought sanctions against Akram that prevented him from working for the board in the future. The report fined Akram and recommended that he be removed from the Pakistan captaincy. And though it conceded that it did not have the evidence to find him outright guilty of some allegations, it also recognised that was the case because of a u-turn by Ata-ur-Rehman, a prime witness against Akram (and also banned for life by Justice Qayyum).”The fact is the Qayyum report said he shouldn’t be captain,” Mani said. “The PCB removed him, he got fined. But there was no sanction from working in future for the board.”That, and subsequent comments by Mohsin, has meant that a strong, diverse committee with the potential for meaningful work has been overshadowed. Alongside Akram, the committee includes former captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Urooj Mumtaz. Misbah is seen as someone who can give relevant inputs into the state of domestic cricket, in which he still participates and is a believer. Mumtaz’s appointment is an indication that the administration is going to take more seriously the development of the women’s game.Mani is eager for all involved – Akram and Mohsin, as well as Mickey Arthur and Sarfraz Ahmed about whom Mohsin has made controversial comments – to put these issues behind them and move on.
