Sri Lanka Under-19 captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored his third hundred in three games against England Under-19 to set up a 31-run win, on the Duckworth/Lewis method, in the first of five Youth one-day internationals. Rajapaksa, who cracked centuries in both drawn Tests at Colombo and Galle, raced to 130 at a-run-a-ball before being dismissed by opposing captain Lewis Gregory as Sri Lanka reached 290 for 8.With rain a constant threat, England’s chase never really got going and they had reached 143 for 6 when the weather closed in decisively to bring an end to the game. The rain had arrived for the first time during the break between innings, resulting in a revised target of 231 in 33 overs that was always going to be a challenging task for the English. Sam Wood, who was in sparkling form during the Tests, launched the innings with a flurry of boundaries but an ephemeral knock was soon ended by Rajapaksa’s medium-pace. The Sri Lankan captain completed a fine all-round performance by bowling Adam Rossington in the same over as England slipped to 31 for 2.Sri Lanka’s spinners then took control, keeping a lid on England’s run rate and picking up wickets at regular intervals. Bright innings from Gregory, Ateeq Javid and opener Daniel Bell-Drummond were swiftly cut short, with Supeshala Jayathilake striking twice and Amila Aponso and Shehan Jayasuriya picking up a wicket apiece. Adam contributed a bellicose 28 but England were well short of their target when the rain set in for good.It could well have been a different story for the visitors had they exhibited better control with the ball after Gregory won the toss and sent Sri Lanka in. An erratic attack gave away a total of 45 extras – the third highest contribution to the innings – with fast bowler Matt Dunn the worst offender as he picked up two wickets but also sent down six wides and two no-balls.Sri Lanka were 57 for 3, Gregory striking twice in his first spell, before a 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Rajapaksa and Dhananjaya de Silva steadied the innings. England took the upper hand once again when medium-pacer Shiv Thakor removed de Silva and Angelo Jayasinghe in quick succession, but Rajapaksa found an able partner in wicketkeeper Lasith Abeyratne and together they compiled the most impressive stand of the innings. They had put together 139 at better than a-run-a-ball before Rajapaksa finally departed. Abeyratne followed him to the pavilion two balls later, run out for 46, but Sanitha de Mel helped boost the total before he fell to the final ball of the innings.

Mumbai, Saurashtra enter quarters

A round-up of the action from the preliminary quarter-finals of the 2009-10 Vijay Hazare Trophy

Cricinfo staff22-Feb-2010Mumbai’s bowlers held their nerve to clinch a thriller against Punjab at the Sardar Patel Stadium B Ground in Ahmedabad, to book their place in the quarter-finals of Vijay Hazare Trophy. The tone for a low-scoring thriller was set after Punjab won the toss and reduced Mumbai to 21 for 3 in the sixth over as Sushant Marathe, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma fell by the wayside. Wasim Jaffer tried to steady things in the company of Parag Khanapurkar, before he became the first of three Rahul Sharma scalps in the 20th over. With their best batsmen out of the equation, Mumbai needed a hero to save the day and they found one in the unheralded Khanapurkar. Despite paltry contributions from the tail, he kept the scoreboard ticking with a mixture of good running and aggressive hits. Abhishek Raut hung around long enough to help him raise 53, as Mumbai stuttered past the 200-run mark. Khanapurkar was the last man out, for a maginificent 123 off 118 balls, an innings that suggested that he was batting on a different wicket. Bipul Sharma picked three wickets and Love Ablish finished with two, as Punjab chased 228.With a modest target to defend, the Mumbai attack rose to the occasion in characteristic fashion. Dhawal Kulkarni accounted for Ravi Inder Singh early, before Rohit sent back Uday Kaul, the Punjab captain, in the 12th over to trigger some anxiety. Mandeep Singh, the India Under-19 star, took charge of the chase, and calmed the nerves with significant, if not substantial stands for the next three wickets. But Mumbai kept fighting, striking each time a partnership threatened to settle the issue. When Mandeep fell at 193 for 7 in the 45th over, the game was there for the taking, and Bipul looked intent on settling it in Punjab’s favour with a 25-ball blitz worth 33. But his fall, with 15 needed off 16 balls gave Mumbai the inch they needed to roar back into the game. It was fitting that Khanapurkar got the penultimate wicket, of Rahul who had struck a six, before Jaskaran Singh was run out off the first ball of the final over, with Punjab still four runs short.Saurashtra upstaged Uttar Pradesh comfortably by seven wickets to seal a place in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Sagar Jogiyani, the Saurashtra wicketkeeper, starred with his maiden List-A century, laced with 10 fours and three sixes, to steer his side past UP’s 204 with almost ten overs to spare.A combined bowling effort had helped Saurashtra, who opted to field, to restrict the opposition. Left-am medium-pacer Jaidev Unadkat grabbed three for 44, and was supported by Jayesh Odedra, who picked up two wickets, as they made inroads into the top order to dent UP early into their innings. There were important contributions from Ali Murtaza (67) and Piyush Chawla (48), but a total of 204 proved inadequate in the wake of Jogiyani’s dominating response. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Saurashtra, however. UP had nipped out three wickets for 63, including Cheteshwar Pujara, but Jogiyani was well backed up by Shitanshu Kotak, who made 69 in an unbeaten stand of 142 to seal victory.Saurashtra will take on Bengal in their quarter-final in Vadodara on February 25, while Mumbai heads to Rajkot to face Tamil Nadu on the same day.

SAFC: Luke Edwards makes manager claim

A major update has emerged on Sunderland’s search for their new head coach…

What’s the talk?

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has revealed that they are closing in on Lee Johnson’s replacement and should have them in place before their next League One match.

He Tweeted: “Oh, sorry no questions on Sunderland in the end. So, anyway, an appointment is edging closer at #safc and I’d expect it before the weekend.”

Edwards followed that up with: “I am anticipating a breakthrough/decision/announcement on Roy Keane being appointed #safc manager before the weekend. I think it’s close but until it’s done it’s not done etc. New manager wanted for next game that’s for sure.”

Buzzing

Sunderland fans will surely be buzzing with this update as it suggests that their nightmare is set to come to an end in the next few days. The period between Johnson’s sacking and the present has been a dreadful time for supporters on and off the pitch.

In terms of what has been happening behind the scenes, the Stadium of Light faithful have had to deal with slow progress on the search for a new manager. It has been more than a week since the ex-Bristol City coach was given his marching orders and the lack of speed in replacement may suggest to the fans that the club did not adequately prepare for the situation.

It has also been a frustrating time on the pitch. Mike Dodds has led the team for two matches on an interim basis and suffered back-to-back 2-1 defeats to Doncaster and Cheltenham. They are both in the bottom half of the League One table and their respective victories have left Sunderland fourth and nine points off Rotherham at the top of the division.

Therefore, supporters will be elated to put this period behind them by potentially welcoming Keane in and looking forward to his era at the club. Bringing in a head coach before their clash with AFC Wimbledon at the weekend will surely give fans fresh belief after a testing spell in recent weeks, giving them something to cheer about as they will finally have a reason to be positive.

It is now imperative that Kristjaan Speakman is able to get this deal over the line before Saturday as he could risk the relationship with the supporters reaching boiling point if Dodds is in charge and the Black Cats are beaten for a third match in a row.

Captain Gilchrist lifts Middlesex with 47-ball ton

Emergency skipper Adam Gilchrist answered the Middlesex call by cracking a 47-ball century to ease the visitors to a comfortable six-wicket win over Kent in Canterbury

ScorecardAdam Gilchrist celebrated his first game as captain in style, cracking a rapid hundred•Bipin PatelEmergency skipper Adam Gilchrist answered the Middlesex call by cracking a 47-ball century to ease the visitors to a comfortable six-wicket Friends Provident t20 win over Kent in Canterbury. The 38-year Australian Test great was thrust into the captaincy role following Shaun Udal’s mid-afternoon resignation and responded by smashing 106, with nine fours and seven sixes. With Gilchrist leading from the front, the visitors easily chased down Kent’s 183 for 6 to open their South Group win account with an over to spare. Udal had quit following a team meeting held in the St Lawrence dressing rooms just after 3pm.Gilchrist won the toss and asked the hosts to bat in front of a disappointing Canterbury crowd of barely 3,000 who witnessed the loss of Kent captain Rob Key in the second over after feathering a catch to Gilchrist. Joe Denly and Martin van Jaarsveld (50) joined forces to add 70 for the second wicket inside eight overs, taking advantage of some undisciplined bowling and a short boundary on the lime tree side of the ground. Both right-handers clattered seven fours but Denly, when looking to advance and hit Shaun Udal over his head, effectively yorked himself allowing Gilchrist to collect and whip off the bails for a stumping. Van Jaarsveld raced to a 31-ball half-century but fell to the very next delivery when chipping a Neil Dexter slower ball to Pedro Collins at square leg.Spitfires maintained their impetus through Geraint Jones and in-form Darren Stevens in a five-over partnership worth 58. The stand ended when Stevens swatted the 23rd ball of his stay to long-off. Azhar Mahmood lost off stump when heaving across the line and Jones danced across his stumps to go lbw, to give Collins a three for 38 haul and set Middlesex an asking rate of 9.2 an over. After the early loss of David Warner (17), Gilchrist teamed up with former Kent favourite Neil Dexter to bat the hosts out of contention with a stunning second-wicket stand of 104 in nine overs. After chipping four sixes in his 45, Dexter holed out to deep mid-wicket.Gilchrist and Eoin Morgan, who was bowled for a second-ball duck, both fell with seven needed for victory, leaving Owais Shah and Dawid Malan to complete the win.

Spurs agree personal terms for Adama Traore

According to GiveMeSport, there has been another big update in Tottenham Hotspur’s hunt to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Adama Traore.

The Lowdown: Spurs talks ongoing…

Over the last fortnight, Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have been in talks to sign the 25-year-old as Antonio Conte seeks a new makeshift right wing-back for his system.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham have even attempted to negotiate a loan with an obligation to buy for Traore as this transfer saga seemingly drags on through to the last few days of the January window.

This comes amid Paratici’s efforts to complete other deals as they also reportedly close in on the signing of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and continue talks to offload club record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

The Latest: Personal terms completed…

Sharing an update on Traore, GiveMeSport have a promising development. According to their sources, Tottenham and the Spain international have now agreed personal terms to make him the fourth-highest paid player in Conte’s squad.

It is believed that the Lilywhites will pay Traore a bumper £120,000-per-week salary if they can agree a deal with Wolves as the north London club edge that little bit closer to his arrival, with the report describing this as a ‘significant breakthrough’.

All that’s left now is for Spurs to make a formal bid for the winger, as GiveMeSport claim they are eyeing an initial loan move ahead of a permanent transfer in the summer.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Signing Traore would undoubtedly boost Conte’s options at N17 and provide a much larger threat down the right flank.

As he seeks a carbon copy of Victor Moses, who the Italian re-moulded into a top- class right wing-back at Chelsea, the Molineux ace could certainly do a similar job across London.

Traore has averaged a hugely threatening 4.2 successful take-ons per 90 in the Premier League this season, a far greater return than any of Conte’s current options at Tottenham (WhoScored).

Described as a ‘world-beater’ by Wolves legend Steve Bull, agreeing personal terms with the 25-year-old certainly seems like one large step towards a potentially exciting addition as Spurs aim to finish the January transfer window on a high.

Dion Sanderson set to be recalled by Wolves

Wolves youngster Dion Sanderson is set to be recalled from his loan spell at Championship side Birmingham City, according to journalist John Percy.

The Lowdown: Sanderson shines on loan

The 22-year-old moved to the Blues on a temporary basis last summer in order to earn regular playing time outside of the Premier League.

Sanderson has impressed during his time at St Andrew’s, making 14 Championship starts and winning 2.4 aerial duels per game – only Romain Saiss with 2.6 has bettered that figure at Molineux this term.

While the young defender was expected to be on loan at Birmingham for the entirety of the 2021/22 season, it now looks as though that won’t be the case.

The Latest: Youngster set for Wolves return

According to The Telegraph’s Percy, who shared a link to his article via Twitter, Sanderson will be recalled imminently in order to bolster the depth in Bruno Lage’s squad between now and the end of the campaign.

The defender has just one first-team appearance to his name for Wolves, which came against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup back in 2019/20.

The Verdict: Sensible move

With Saiss now on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Morocco, it makes perfect sense for Lage to bring Sanderson back into the fold, with the youngster hailed as ‘an absolute Rolls-Royce’ by Sunderland manager Lee Johnson during an impressive loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season.

Whether or not he is thrown straight into the team remains to be seen – it would perhaps be a surprise if he is, given his total lack of Premier League experience – but it is vital to have defensive cover.

It could even be the case that Lage goes to a back four for a few weeks rather than his favoured three, which would see Max Kilman and Conor Coady partnering one another in defence. It would be a big change in formation, though, making it a risk at a key point in the season.

Raqibul Hasan has contract terminated

Raqibul Hasan, the Bangladesh batsman who retired on the eve of the Test series against England before subsequently overturning the decision a week later, has had his contract terminated by the Bangladesh Cricket Board

Cricinfo staff19-Mar-2010Raqibul Hasan, the Bangladesh batsman who retired on the eve of the Test series against England before subsequently overturning the decision a week later, has had his contract terminated by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and won’t be considered for selection for three months.Raqibul threw Bangladesh’s plans into disarray the day before the opening Test in Chittagong when he announced his retirement plans on the team bus. However, on March 17 he sent another letter to the board reversing his decision.”The board considers Raqibul’s conduct in the whole affair as disruptive to the preparation of the Bangladesh team ahead of a highly important Test match,” a statement said. “It was a serious breach of discipline on part of a contracted player and unbecoming of an international cricketer.”As such the board has terminated his contract with immediate effect and he will not be considered for selection in the national team for three months effective from 19 March to 19 June 2010. However he will be allowed to participate in domestic cricket competitions.”That decision rules him out the World Twenty20, although he hadn’t been named in the preliminary squad for that event, and more significantly Bangladesh’s tour of England which starts at the end of May. However, he will be eligible for selection by the time the one-day series in England takes place in July.Raqibul’s move was in response to being omitted from the one-day series against England and also the preliminary World Twenty20 squad, although there were also reports of disagreement between board and selectors over his place in the Test squad. He had been earmarked for a Test recall after an impressive warm-up match for Bangladesh A against England where he made 107 and 51.”The board believes that timely punitive measures would discourage other players from taking similar path in future and has decided that very strict actions will be taken against cricketers who break discipline and BCB’s code of conduct,” the statement added.Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, had earlier indicated that he hoped to have Raqibul available for the Tests in England. “We’ve spoken to him, but it is still up to a board decision to release him back to play,” he said.”That’s not happening yet so he’s left his run a little bit late. I would have had him back no problem but there’s a few little delays happening. Hopefully we’ll have him back for the England tour and the Asia Cup.”

West Ham fans hail youngsters

A number of West Ham supporters have been hailing a host of Hammers youngsters after they played against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

David Moyes’ side faced a dead rubber contest in Europe on Thursday evening, having already secured qualification into the knockout stages.

It afforded Moyes the luxury of naming a much-changed starting lineup at the London Stadium but it was one that had more meaning to it than normal.

During the night, a total of eight academy graduates took to the field, while there were also five full debutants and two debutants, as highlighted by an official club post.

It was further proof that West Ham are going in the right direction both on and off the pitch, despite the 1-0 defeat, as the latest batch of Hammers youngsters look to mark their mark.

Strauss targets England consistency

England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, believes that Friday’s third ODI at Cape Town could prove to be one of the team’s most instructive of recent times, as they seek to build on the momentum generated by their impressive seven-wicket victory at Centurion last week, and end their frustrating habit of inconsistency.England’s returns in one-day cricket in the past 14 months have fluctuated like the stock market – a 4-0 victory at home to South Africa, a 5-0 defeat away to India, back-to-back series wins against West Indies, and a 6-1 hiding at home to Australia. In the recent Champions Trophy, England continued that trend with impressive wins against Sri Lanka and South Africa, only to collapse to a crushing defeat in the semi-final against Australia.”There is a long-term plan in improving our one-day cricket – and these sorts of games are the ones that can really take us forward,” Strauss told reporters at Newlands on the eve of the match. “We’ve said in the past we’ve always responded well to defeat, but we have not been quite so great on building on a good performance. We’re going to try to put ourselves under a bit of pressure this game to make sure we build on that.”England have never yet managed more than a single victory in any one of their three previous one-day tours of South Africa – and they were routed 4-1 on their last visit in 2004-05 – but victory at Newlands on Friday would ensure at least a share of the spoils this time around. Strauss, however, is not banking on South Africa making life easy for them – especially at a venue where they have won 24 of their 27 contests since 1992.”We’ve got ourselves in a nice position to really turn the screw in this one-day series, so now is not the time to let up,” said Strauss. “They are going to come back hard at us, there’s no doubt about that – they’re always competitive anyway but they wouldn’t have enjoyed losing that first game. We’re expecting them to come here all guns blazing.”England’s bid for victory will be aided by the expected return of Stuart Broad, who has recovered from a shoulder injury and is likely to come into the side in place of Sajid Mahmood. South Africa have been quick to focus on Broad’s perceived lack of match fitness, having not played since the opening game of the tour, but Strauss was sure he would rise above such mindgames.”I suppose it’s a little bit of a test of his character,” said Strauss. “Those sorts of comments have a good way of focusing your mind and motivating you – and he certainly looked in fine fettle yesterday when we had a middle practice. He’s confident and he’s been bowling pretty well for a long period of time.”Graeme Swann is another player who could feature on Friday, if England feel that his side strain has healed sufficiently, while Kevin Pietersen – who recently returned to action after recuperating from Achilles surgery in July – will be keen to improve on his current tour tally of 37 runs in three innings.”He’s been out for a while, so it’s always going to take a couple of games for him to be at 100%,” said Strauss. “But I never have any real worries about KP, a big score is always just around the corner. He’s fresh, motivated and really wants to contribute to the England side – and coming back to South Africa is another place he really wants to do well.”

Conte has a new secret weapon at Spurs

Antonio Conte may have discovered a new secret weapon at Tottenham Hotspur after Ryan Sessegnon delivered an exciting cameo on his return from injury this weekend.

Spurs moved into seventh place with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Leeds United on Sunday evening and the Italian will surely be buoyed by what he saw from several of his key players, including Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon, who both scored rare goals.

But perhaps in the 21-year-old dynamo he now has a threat that not many will have seen as he has only made 15 appearances since his £25m move from Fulham in the summer of 2019.

He spent last season on loan to Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim, where he proved to be a reliable influence at left wing-back and almost as if it were by chance, it’s a system that the Lilywhites will be building upon under Conte.

Sessegnon provided two goals and three assists, whilst averaging two tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 0.7 key passes per game in the German top-flight, as per WhoScored, which suggests not only is he a threat going forward but he can do some very solid defensive duties, too.

Since October’s international break, the young gem has been stuck on the treatment table but after returning to training last week, Conte selected him in his matchday squad before bringing him on in the place of the knackered Reguilon in the 79th minute.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

In just 11 minutes, he enjoyed ten touches of the ball, made two of his three passes, put in an interception and won 100% of his aerial duels, via SofaScore.

As quickfire cameos go, that was certainly a major source of encouragement, particularly as he played left wing-back and that’s likely going to be his best role under Conte going forward.

Once dubbed a “big, big talent” by former Cottagers teammate Stefan Johansen, it’s time for Sessegnon to finally repay the investment chairman Daniel Levy made in him over two years ago.

The £18m-rated wide man was also lauded by the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick as being “lively and encouraging” in his post-Leeds column, whilst further reports claim Sessegnon has “impressed” Conte on the training pitch.

All the stars are aligning for the rarely-seen 21-year-old to play a big part under the Italian but only time will tell if he can actually kick on this time.

AND in other news, Conte eyes “dominant” £54m-rated “Rolls-Royce”, he could be Spurs’ new Jan Vertonghen…
