Fechou!

Celtic had lucky escape over Oliver Burke

Celtic have seen plenty of players join the Parkhead club on loan deals over the past few years to see if they can help the team in whatever way they can on the pitch.

As often tends to be the case, players end up returning to their original clubs to either stake their claim to be a part of the team there or possibly go out on loan to a different destination again.

One player who had a loan spell with Celtic that the club will be pleased to have passed up on a permanent basis is Oliver Burke.

Having made the move to Celtic Park on loan from West Bromwich Albion back in January 2019, the Scottish attacker ended up scoring four goals and providing three assists in 19 games before returning to the English club at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Despite delivering a few goal contributions during his time with the Hoops, some of his performances didn’t always live up to expectations, with Frank McAvennie labelling the striker’s display against Rangers in May 2019 as a “disgrace”.

Things haven’t gone too well for the 24-year-old since his loan period with Celtic, as he then had a temporary spell in Spain with Alaves where he found the back of the net just once in 32 appearances.

After that, West Brom gave up on him and sold him to Sheffield United in 2020, where he has since scored just two goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.

At this stage of his career, Burke – who is currently picking up £16k-per-week according to Salary Sport – has found himself on loan once again, this time with Millwall, where he has only made six appearances since moving in January, with no goals or assists to his name so far at The Den.

Taking all this into account, the former Celtic loan signing has yet to equal the same number of goal contributions that he made for the Hoops since leaving them, despite playing for four separate clubs in three years of trying to do so.

This says to us that the Parkhead club had a lucky escape and ultimately made the right decision not to try and sign the centre-forward on a permanent basis after his loan spell in Glasgow.

Deccan resist gutsy Collingwood to reach semis

Andrew Symonds’ sparkling 54 gave Deccan a defendable total, which they protected with an inspired fielding performance led by Rohit Sharma and disciplined bowling

Deccan Chargers won five games in a row to qualify for the knockout stage•Indian Premier League

They were the IPL’s nomads, they needed to win five games in a row to reach the semi-finals, and things looked heavily loaded against them. But Deccan Chargers, the defending champions, made it. On a slow pitch at Feroz Shah Kotla, Andrew Symonds’ sparkling 54 gave Deccan a defendable total, which they protected with an inspired fielding performance led by Rohit Sharma and disciplined bowling. Paul Collingwood kept Delhi in the chase until the end but he lacked the firepower, and support, to pull off a victory. It boiled down to Delhi needing 17 runs in the final over and Chaminda Vaas bowled exceptionally, mixing his slower ones with near-perfect yorkers. Deccan had earlier wobbled at the start before the Symonds show and slowed to a crawl post his fall to reach 145 for 7. It was a slow pitch, better than the previous tracks in Delhi though, and the chase was unlikely to be a stroll for the hosts. And it wasn’t.Rohit, who contributed only 11 the bat, took a couple of breathtaking catches to tilt the game Deccan’s way. He flew low to his right at first slip, grabbing a one-hand catch to remove Virender Sehwag. In the seventh over, he flung himself to his left at short midwicket to get rid of Gautam Gambhir. Both his catches, however, were created by clever bowling. Vaas, who replaced Ryan Harris, had deceived Virender Sehwag with a slower off cutter and Pragyan Ojha had beaten Gambhir in flight, forcing him to drag the ball squarer than intended. Between those wickets, Tillakaratne Dilshan had fallen while trying to paddle scoop. The slower one from Harmeet Singh trapped him in front as he moved across. The loss of three quick wickets had derailed the chase and, considering Paul Collingwood’s recent struggles against spin, Delhi depended heavily on Dinesh Karthik. When Mithun Manhas was run out after a mix-up with Collingwood, Delhi needed 78 off 49 deliveries. Karthik entered the fray but didn’t last long. The delivery from Ojha landed on middle and off stump and turned just enough to go past Karthik’s bat and hit off. Collingwood hung around for a while and was even dropped couple of times by, of all the people, Rohit and Symonds but couldn’t finish it off.It was an inspired bowling performance from Deccan but if it wasn’t for a superbly-crafted knock from Symonds, the bowlers would not have had much to defend. The story of their innings was summarised after the first time-out in the tenth over. Amit Mishra bowled with a slip and a silly point to the new batsman Mitchell Marsh, but when Symonds came on strike most fielders were back patrolling the boundary. Delhi were on the attack and knew only one man posed a threat. Marsh preserved his wicket and allowed Symonds to play a fine knock.Symonds initially reserved his aggression for Amit Mishra. The legspinner troubled Symonds with his googlies, which he picked only off the pitch, but he would time and again counterattack with a muscled hit. He moved down the track to lift a legbreak over long off, followed it by biffing a googly into the same stand and slugged a flighted delivery from outside off over long-on. In between, he edged a legbreak between the keeper and first slip and just when Mishra was seemingly on the ascent, Symonds would break free. Symonds crashed Tillakaratne Dilshan’s offbreaks for two sixes and even played a delicate late cut against Paul Collingwood to collect a boundary.Deccan had reached 116 for 4 in the 15th over and things were set for a final assault when Symonds fell. Mishra had just switched to bowling from round the stumps to Symonds and had his man chipping straight to long off. Delhi applied the squeeze from then on, just as they had done in the first half of the game, but the total proved beyond their reach.

Panesar prepares for new start at Sussex

There are currently four England spinners on their tours of Bangladesh and UAE, but none of them are Monty Panesar which shows how far his star has fallen

There are currently four England spinners on their tours of Bangladesh and UAE, but none of them are Monty Panesar which shows how far his star has fallen. Instead, Panesar has finally been unveiled at his new county, Sussex, four months after joining them from Northamptonshire in an attempt to revitalise a stalling career.Graeme Swann is now England’s No. 1 spinner and his deputy in Bangladesh is James Tredwell, while the slow-bowling places in the England Lions squad are with Adil Rashid and David Wainwright. Panesar spent part of his winter overseas, but the nearest he got to the national set-up was when he helped in the nets before the final Test in Johannesburg in January. Instead he was with the Lions franchise in South Africa in an effort to recapture his form after managing a paltry 18 wickets at 59.44 in 13 Championship matches in 2009.His last appearance for England came against Australia, at Cardiff, where he famously helped save the Test alongside James Anderson as the final pair survived 69 balls. It would ultimately play a vital part in England regaining the Ashes, but Panesar’s bowling had fallen away badly over the preceding six months. A lot of advice was throw his way, but it only seemed to make the situation worse and part of the reasoning behind his winter away from the spotlight was to allow him to think for himself.Panesar’s stint in South Africa ended with 15 wickets at 39.06 which doesn’t appear an unqualified success, but he has returned to England feeling far happier with life than he had for much of last year and how his focus is on making an impact with Sussex.”It was an opportunity for me to play cricket elsewhere which will hopefully help me become the successful international cricketer that I want to be,” he told Cricinfo. “I haven’t really focussed on how or where I am with England, I just tried to go to the Lions and give myself the best chance to come to Sussex in form. I feel this is the second phase of my career now which will give me a good kick start and I’m just concentrating on making as good a start as possible.”Dave Nosworthy, the Lions coach, said how he had tried to give Panesar the freedom to express himself while also giving him the opportunity to mentor the franchise’s young spinners. Nosworthy’s view was Panesar could still become more proactive as a bowler and how Michael Yardy, the Sussex captain, handles his new bowler will give an indication of the responsibility on Panesar’s shoulders.”You have to learn and develop and the best way to do that is to play in different conditions, learning how different players play, and I think my time with the Lions enabled me to do that,” Panesar said. “I got the opportunity to help coach the youngsters over there and it was something I enjoyed, passing some knowledge onto other players. And being part of Sussex here it’s something I would like to do as well when and where I can.”Panesar’s only played first-class cricket during the winter, but Sussex’s success last season came in the one-day game as they were relegated in the Championship. While he is likely to be eased into the season with four-day cricket, Panesar is eager to play a part in all formats but knows success may not come straight away.”Last year Sussex had a phenomenal one-day season and that’s something I want to develop in my game because I feel when I’m bowling at my best I can have an impact in all formats,” he said. “I think come the one-day cricket and Twenty20 games I can add some value to their side. It may take me time to settle, but hopefully later in the summer when the pitches are drier I can have some impact.” Sussex have announced a surplus for the financial year which ended in October 2009 of £1, 455. “The success of the Sussex one-day side, which including winning the Twenty20 Cup and the Pro40 Division 1, as well as qualification for the Champions League in India, was a major factor in our achieving our impressive turnover figure,” said chairman Jim May. “As expected, costs rose with this and we therefore regard the result as satisfactory in testing times.”

Tendulkar and Dravid put India on top

Having failed to take advantage of the toss, Bangladesh paid the fullpenalty on the second day, as India’s batsmen built up a formidable totalin favourable conditions

Having failed to take advantage of the toss, Bangladesh paid the fullpenalty on the second day, as India’s batsmen built up a formidable totalin favourable conditions. There were centuries for Sachin Tendulkar andRahul Dravid after Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir put together theirseventh three-figure partnership. With plenty of batting to come and thelead already well over 200, Bangladesh were staring at another heavydefeat. It could have been worse if not for a Shahadat Hossan bouncer that didn’tlift appreciably and smashed into the side of Dravid’s face. He retiredhurt straight away, and was taking for a precautionary check-up. By then, the partnership with Tendulkar was worth 222, with both men taking heavytoll of a tiring attack.Tendulkar had taken 89 balls for his half-century, but he needed only afurther 45 deliveries to bring up his 45th hundred. He played his usualarray of sweeps, some of them with immense power, and threaded the oddball through the offside cordon as the runs came in a flurry. Dravid toospeeded up with a hundred in sight, and got there with a magnificentoff-drive off Shakib Al Hasan. After his exit, Tendulkar and Murali Vijay consolidated. Vijay timed theball superbly in front of the wicket, and played a delicate late-cut offShakib in a 30-run cameo that ended when he came down the track and foundthe man at mid-on. By then, Tendulkar had gone in similar fashion, havingalready struck Shakib for six and four down the ground earlier in theover. Harbhajan Singh edged the day’s penultimate delivery from ShafiulIslam behind, but with Yuvraj Singh to come, Bangladesh’s bowling travailswere far from over. They hadn’t helped their cause by dropping Tendulkar twice, while Dravidtoo enjoyed his fair share of fortune. Raqibul Hasan had batted poorly onthe opening day and his catching, or lack of it, cost his team on Monday.Tendulkar had just survived an inside-edge off the impressive RubelHossain when he miscued one in the direction of gully. Raqibul got bothhands to it, and dropped it. He was on 27 at the time, and when he hadmade 50, Raqibul put down a more difficult chance to his left at point. This time, Shahadat was the luckless bowler, and Tendulkar celebrated thereprieves by batting with real fluency in the half hour before tea.Smart stats

The 222-run stand between Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar is the 17th century partnership the two, which is a record for a single pair. Two pairs have 16 hundred partnerships – Hayden-Ponting and Greenidge-Haynes. Among Indian pairs the next highest is 12, between Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. (Click here for the full list.)

Dravid and Tendulkar have also put together four double-century stands, which ties them in second place with four other pairs. Hayden and Langer lead the way with six.

Tendulkar has become the first batsman to score 90 international hundreds, and is 23 clear of the second-placed Ponting. Brian Lara, with 53, is the only other batsman with more than 50 international centuries.

Gautam Gambhir’s 68 is his 11th score of 50 or more in successive Tests, which equals Viv Richards’ record. Richards achieved this feat over a 13-month period in the mid-1970s, when he scored seven hundreds and six fifties in 19 innings, averaging 94.10 in these 11 Tests. Gambhir has scored eight hundreds and five fifties during this period, averaging 89.89. (Click here for the full list updated before the start of this Test.)

Dravid’s 111 is his 29th Test century, which is the eighth-highest in the all-time list. It’s his third Test century versus Bangladesh, against whom he averages 70 in seven Tests.

Tendulkar has scored a hundred every time he has gone past 50 against Bangladesh. Thus, he has five hundreds and no half-centuries in seven Tests against Bangladesh, at an average of 136.67, which is easily his highest against any team.

Shakib had gone off with a shin problem, and as hard as the bowlerstoiled, with so few runs on the board, there was little pressure on thebatsmen, who picked the gaps and moved the score along steadily. Both mencame down the pitch occasionally to the spinners, and drove beautifullythrough the covers, while Dravid also played some fine strokes throughmidwicket. His good luck had arrived before lunch, and he made the most ofit. He had made just nine when Shafiul claimed a run-out after GautamGambhir smashed one straight back down the pitch. The Bangladeshis wereconvinced that Shafiul’s little finger had brushed the ball, but withreplays inconclusive, the third umpire had to rule in the batsman’sfavour. Then, when he was on 28, an excellent bouncer from Rubel caught himunawares. The fend was superbly caught by Junaid Siddique at slip, buteven as Dravid trudged off, Billy Bowden was signalling a no-ball. Havingresumed on 69 for 0, the Indians had seen Sehwag survive a very good shoutfrom Shahadat early on, and when he then cracked one through the covers toreach 50, the omens were ominous. Gambhir too was in fluent touch, clipping Shafiul through midwicket and using both cute deflections and thestraight bat to pinch fours off Shahadat.Sehwag bludgeoned one straight to bring up three figures, but the verynext delivery reared up at him and took the glove on its way to MushfiqurRahim. Dravid took his time to play himself in, and Gambhir assumed thescoring mantle, with a back-foot punch and a guide through the slips offShafiul taking him to a half-century for the 11th match in succession -equalling the record set by Sir Vivian Richards.Having found his bearings, Dravid started to play some gorgeous strokesthrough cover, off pace and spin alike, and when Gambhir was caught in anungainly tangle by Shafiul’s bouncer, it was very much against the grainof play. But with Tendulkar easing his way into the proceedings with anudge here and a push there, it was still India that held the ace-hand asthe teams went to lunch. After that, with Bangladesh unable to hold on tothe chances that came their way, it was all one-way traffic, 390 runsworth of it.

Aston Villa: Villans make Manuel Lanzini enquiry

Aston Villa and Leeds have both approached West Ham over a possible move for Manuel Lanzini, according to TEAMtalk.

The Lowdown: Gerrard’s huge January kitty

Steven Gerrard looks set to be a busy man in the New Year in what will be his first transfer window as Villa boss.

A new centre-back and a defensive midfielder are reportedly his main priorities, with Marvelous Nakamba suffering a serious knee injury in recent weeks.

He’s been promised a huge transfer kitty by NSWE, and it appears as if attacking midfielder Lanzini is a player of interest to Gerrard and sporting director Johan Lange.

The Latest: Villa’s enquiry

TEAMtalk shared a story on Wednesday evening suggesting both Villa and Leeds made it clear to the Hammers they are keen on the Argentine.

West Ham were open to an exit earlier in the season, but they have rebuffed approaches regarding a January transfer involving Lanzini.

The 28-year-old, labelled as a ‘top player’ by Darren Bent, has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, with his three league starts coming in the last three fixtures.

The Verdict: Priorities

Gerrard and Lange’s main focus should be on a holding midfielder in January, so their failed approach for Lanzini shouldn’t be viewed as a disaster at this moment in time.

The club have just Douglas Luiz as the only available senior defensive midfield option following Nakamba’s injury. Should they get one in early next month, then perhaps a move for an attacking midfielder could be of use, with Jacob Ramsey the club’s only out and out attacking midfielder.

However, Gerrard has plenty of wide attacking talent on the books who could adapt to a central role, but losing Luiz alongside Nakamba and not bringing in a replacement could be extremely worrying.

Newcastle: Lee Ryder talks up Pepe links

Newcastle United journalist Lee Ryder has described links with Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe as ‘intriguing’.

The lowdown

French publication Jeunes Footeux reported earlier this month that Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace were all interested in the 26-year-old. Their suggestion was that the Ivory Coast international could leave on loan with an option to buy.

The £72m 2019 signing boasts the record for the most expensive addition in Arsenal’s history, and he is currently said to be earning £140,000 per week in north London.

He started five of the Gunners’ first eight Premier League matches this season, but has been an unused substitute for the last three (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

Writing in The Chronicle, Ryder stated that the rumour is ‘one of the most intriguing’ to have surfaced of late regarding Newcastle.

He noted Mikel Arteta’s stance that the player is not for sale but pointed out that the Spaniard made similar claims about Joe Willock in the summer before he made the permanent move from the Emirates Stadium to St James’ Park.

The verdict

This would be a sensational deal when you consider that Pepe ranks as one of the 10 biggest signings in Premier League history.

He has been dismissed as a flop by the likes of Robert Pires, but his stats are actually quite respectable. In 98 appearances for the Gunners, he has been directly involved in 43 goals, scoring 25 and providing 18 assists (via Transfermarkt), a return of one goal contribution every 178 minutes in the Premier League.

Former Arsenal interim boss Freddie Ljunberg is among those who recognise the £31.5m-rated winger’s qualities, describing him as ‘lethal’, and Newcastle could do a lot worse than give him a new lease of life, just as they did with Willock earlier in 2021.

In other news, a source from another big six club has provided the latest on this Newcastle target.

Crystal Palace keen on Reyes Cleary move

Crystal Palace are interested in signing exciting West Brom teenager Reyes Cleary, but Bayern Munich are among the other clubs who are also keen on him.

The Lowdown: Cleary excelling at West Brom

The 17-year-old is making a name for himself at The Hawthorns, scoring an incredible 15 goals in just 13 games for the Baggies’ under-18 and under-23 sides this season.

While Cleary is yet to make his senior debut, his current form at youth level suggests that it may not be too far away. The young attacker is yet to sign his first professional contract, and although West Brom are desperately hoping he will commit his future to them, other clubs are circling.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The Latest: Palace linked with move

According to The Daily Mail, Palace are one of those, with the Eagles seeing him as an exciting option to bring in at Selhurst Park.

European giants Bayern Munich are also thought to be in the mix, a real measure of Cleary’s potential, while Newcastle United and Southampton are mentioned in the report as well.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-11/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One for the future

Palace have a great history of developing young English talent in their ranks, from Nathaniel Clyne to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrick Mitchell, and Cleary could be the next emerging homegrown player to make his mark at Selhurst Park.

Building towards the future is always important, and given the Albion youngster’s aforementioned record, he could go onto have a huge impact in south London if he makes the move there.

It could be tough to pip Bayern to Cleary’s signature, but it is refreshing to see the Eagles in the race to sign a player who has been called a “powerful forward player” and an “excellent finisher” by West Brom under-18 boss Peter Gilbert.

In other news, Crystal Palace are reportedly keen on signing an attacking player. Read more here.
