Winning England performance about putting things right

England were not the best side in the world and nor were they the worst and last night’s victory over New Zealand had been about putting things right, according to England captain Nasser Hussain

Lynn McConnell20-Feb-2002England were not the best side in the world and nor were they the worst and last night’s victory over New Zealand had been about putting things right, according to England captain Nasser Hussain. He said the 43-run victory that kept the National Bank Series alive was a result of the experience of the loss of the second match in Wellington when England were dismissed for 89.Hussain had adopted a low-key attitude after the Wellington performance, initiating a team analysis session and asking the players why it had gone so badly.”Because it was not an understandable performance.”To some degree we put things right tonight,” he said. But he expected that New Zealand would be looking to do the same thing before the next game in Auckland on Saturday.”New Zealand will up their standards,” he said. The decision on the same 11 being chosen for yesterday’s game as suffered the record loss in Wellington had been a matter of the 11 people messing it up there putting it right in Napier.”If you keep working at things some days it will go right,” he said. All winter the side had had very good starts with the bat and that had been the case again here and the run-a-ball innings by Graham Thorpe during the last 10 overs had also been significant.Hussain was also happy to lose the toss and be asked to bat first. He knew from the last time the teams played here and Chris Harris had been able to swing the ball around that the same could happen this time, and so it proved for Paul Collingwood. It had been difficult to restart the innings after the two rain breaks, especially when those breaks came in the 13th over just as the side was looking to use the last two of the first 15 overs to mount an assault before the field dropped back and in the last stages of the innings when the charge was on.The rain had juiced the pitch up a little but on the second occasion especially New Zealand had to deal with a wet ball and more difficult fielding conditions.

Man City dealt Robin Gosens blow

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens this summer have taken a blow after Barcelona joined the race to sign the German defender.

Man City have regularly been linked with the 26-year-old ahead of the upcoming transfer window and the latest report from Spanish news outlet Sport claims that he has now attracted the interest of La Liga giants Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman’s side look set to sell back-up left-back Junior Firpo this summer and need a suitable long-term replacement for Jordi Alba, who has maintained a starting spot at the Nou Camp this season but will turn 33 next year.

Gosens could be the ideal fit with the Catalan side, considering he is very much an attacking left-back, who can also feature in midfield, which would suit Barcelona’s long-standing style of attacking full-backs in the mould of Alba and Dani Alves.

However, his performances this season have been sensational at times and he could also prove to be an excellent addition to Pep Guardiola’s side, especially as left-back is one area in which the Citizens could definitely add some more depth.

Whilst Oleksandr Zinchenko has performed extremely well in recent weeks, and Joao Cancelo has performed well as an inverted wing-back at times this season, they both feel like short-term solutions in that position.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

The Atalanta star could be the man to replace Benjamin Mendy in this City side, with his various injury problems meaning he is no longer the player he once was, which has left the Citizens missing a marauding natural left-back such as Gosens.

The most recent season in Serie A saw the former Heracles Almelo man contribute a superb 11 goals and six assists in 32 appearances, averaging an excellent 7.19 rating from WhoScored.

He was similarly impressive last season, scoring nine and assisting eight in 34 appearances in Italy’s top-flight, so it was perhaps no surprise when former Lazio defender Roberto Cravero suggested that he had a “better” season than Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the Englishman being pivotal to the Merseyside outfit’s first Premier League title.

If the German could match the Liverpool man’s form in the Premier League with City, then he would surely prove to be an excellent addition to Guardiola’s side this summer, so it is unfortunate, therefore, that Barcelona have now entered the race to sign the £31.5m-rated defender, as it may prove to be a major blow to City’s chances of bringing him to the Etihad.

And, in other news… Man City massively missed out on £36m-rated PL beast, Pep dubbed him “one of the best”

Spurs: Would Parker be Hoddle 2.0?

Tottenham Hotspur’s mooted interest in Scott Parker is increasing, according to emerging reports this week…

What’s the word?

Football Insider claimed that Spurs’ former midfielder, who is now in charge of Championship-bound Fulham, is a potential candidate to replace Jose Mourinho in north London, with Daniel Levy hugely keen on bringing him back to the club.

Spurs have reportedly put the feelers out to gauge the 40-year-old’s interest in the job, whilst the Lilywhites chairman is said to “think the world of” of him and is now pushing to secure him as his next manager.

Parker began his coaching career at Hotspur Way, taking charge of the under-18s in 2017 before making the switch to the Cottagers as first team coach under Slavisa Jokanovic. He was then promoted to the manager’s job following the Serbian’s departure, leading them to the Premier League last year.

Shades of Hoddle

Levy ought to be careful in his next appointment and there have to be major question marks over whether or not Parker is ready for this step up. Fulham are very likely to be going straight back down to the second tier, despite vast improvements in form and performances under the 40-year-old in recent months.

The Daily Mail waxed lyrical about how his ‘defensive rebuild’ had been key for the west London outfit. When they were relegated from the top flight last time, they had leaked a whopping 81 goals but now they’re set to head down having conceded only 45 times so far – the second-fewest of any team below 11th.

Parker has even earned the praise of Pep Guardiola, who dubbed him “incredibly good”, whilst ex-Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson recently lauded him as “bright, young and intelligent”, although he did suggest that the Fulham boss would be a “big gamble.”

A big gamble, indeed.

Levy should know all about appointing former players and how badly that can turn out. After sacking George Graham, he looked to Glenn Hoddle, who as a player was one of the best in his generation but delivered two seasons of pure underachievement as a manager.

Poor judgement and arrogance were two factors attributed to his downfall, according to The Guardian, whilst Levy himself claimed he was “very difficult” to work with.

That’s not to say Parker is anything like this, because he’s not, but it does go to show that a good player doesn’t necessarily make a good manager.

The 40-year-old could probably benefit more from further time at Fulham, or at a ‘bridging’ club in between one being relegated and one challenging for Europe.

Hoddle’s fatal reign as Tottenham manager should never tarnish his ability as a player but it probably did damage his reputation, and many in N17 may still have nightmares about his stint in the dugout.

The Spurs job is just too soon for Parker, and Levy must now look elsewhere for Mourinho’s successor.

AND in other news, Levy’s “criminal” decision could deal Spurs huge hammer blow as fresh update emerges…

Sky reporter lifts lid on Levy plan for Spurs

According to a report by Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Tottenham Hotspur are now on the hunt for a new striker with Carlos Vinicius set to return to parent club Benfica after his loan – with the reporter lifting the lid on Daniel Levy’s summer plans for the forward position.

Indeed, as per this report, Spurs look to not be taking the option to buy Vinicius on a permanent deal and will instead target a completely new attacker in this upcoming window.

Sky reporter lifts lid on Levy plan for Spurs striker

This comes amid the continued speculation as to who will be taking charge of Tottenham next season, but Levy has seemingly already devised a plan for the striking position regardless of the managerial vacancy.

“Tottenham are on the hunt for a new striker with Carlos Vinicius set to return to Benfica after his loan.” explained Thomas on social media (Twitter).

It is said that the club’s recruitment plans are unchanged after Mourinho’s departure and a new back up striker to Harry Kane remains one of the club’s top priorities.

Vinicius has barely featured for Spurs in the league under both former boss Jose Mourinho and current interim head coach Ryan Mason, scoring just one goal in three starts (WhoScored).

Transfer Tavern take

The vast majority of his appearances for the Lilywhites have come in the Europa League (five starts), but in that time, he scored an impressive six goals and assisted three of his teammates.

It’s debatable that the 26-year-old didn’t get enough of a chance over his loan spell, but Levy seemingly is not impressed, allowing him return to Benfica.

It is unclear as to who Spurs will target to fulfil the role, but Tottenham’s chairman is arguably making the right move when it comes to not paying Vinicius’ £36m option-to-buy agreement.

That sum of money could be better spent on fixing bigger holes in the squad, like centre-half, and it could also be used to bolster moves for the likes of Milan Skriniar and Joachim Andersen.

Forest must cash in on Worrall this summer

Nottingham Forest should look to move Joe Worrall on this summer amid reports of interest from Norwich City.

What’s been said?

According to a report by The Sun (via Football League World), Worrall is on Daniel Farke’s list of summer targets for his newly promoted Norwich City side, as the German manager looks to strengthen his backline ahead of the Canaries’ Premier League campaign next season.

Alan Nixon has also claimed that it appears “likely” that the 24-year-old will be sold to “the highest bidder” this summer, with it previously being reported that Forest would be demanding a fee of around £12 million to part with the centre-back.

Forest should sell

It is hardly surprising to hear that Norwich are considering a move for Worrall this summer, as the centre-back has highly impressed over his 29 Championship appearances for Chris Hughton’s side this term, helping his team in keeping 11 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.1 interceptions, 0.7 tackles and 4.3 clearances per game.

These returns have seen the former England U21 international average a SofaScore match rating of 6.95 – ranking him as the club’s fifth-best performer in the second tier.

However, despite his admirable displays, as well as his clear importance to the Forest backline, there are a number of reasons why this summer could be the perfect time to cash in on the former Rangers loanee, whom Steven Gerrard dubbed a “leader” during his time in Glasgow.

Firstly, with Worrall under contract at The City Ground until the summer of 2024, the fee that Forest could reasonably demand for his sale is likely to be the highest it will be for the foreseeable future – with it appearing unlikely that the centre-back will put pen to paper on a new deal any time soon.

Secondly, with Norwich receiving a cash injection having secured promotion to the top flight, Forest know full well that Farke’s side have the funds available to pay for Worrall, putting them in a relative position of power in any negotiations.

And, finally, and perhaps most importantly, with Nottingham Forest having something of a season to forget in the Championship, it is evident that much work is needed to be done in the transfer market this summer, something which the sale of Worrall could help fund – while also meaning that the club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, would not have to dip into his own pocket quite so deeply, a positive sign for the financial health of the club.

Steve Bull identifies Jimenez replacement

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who scored 306 goals during his career for Wolves, has claimed that Rafa Mir could replace Raul Jimenez as the main striker after one more spell out on loan.

Mir has been enjoying his time out in Spain with SD Huesca where he has managed to score 24 goals in 49 games, which includes 12 this campaign – and 15 in all competitions – as they look to fight off relegation from La Liga.

Despite playing in a team that is occupying the final relegation spot, Mir’s goals have given Huesca a chance of survival with the 22-year old having netted more times than both Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix.

Speaking on Mir’s future at Wolves and how another loan spell away from Molineux could benefit the striker, Bull told FFC:

He could turn into a great striker so Wolves could send him back out on loan again for another six to eight months where he can get more game time and goals under his belt. Therefore, when he comes back he can replace Jimenez.”

Wolves have struggled for goals this season with Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto topping the goal-scoring charts with five in the Premier League this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping for better performances next season when Raul Jimenez is back and firing for Wolves.

Dyche flattered by Newcastle manager link

Sean Dyche has admitted that he finds the links to the manager job at Newcastle United if Steve Bruce were to leave ‘very flattering’.

However, speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against the St. James’ Park faithful at Sunday lunchtime, the Burnley manager also claimed (via Daily Mirror) that he will keep doing his job with the Clarets.

The North East club are reportedly eyeing up Dyche as a potential replacement for Bruce should the latter leave, given the growing pressure that the former Aston Villa and Sunderland boss is currently under to keep his team in the Premier League.

Newcastle and Dyche a good match

Dyche could be a good fit at the Tyneside club. He is vastly experienced in managing in the top flight, and has kept Burnley for a number of seasons there despite their relatively inferior transfer budget and status to other clubs in the division – something Toon fans know all too well about with Mike Ashley at the helm.

The fact that he has managed to do this should not go unnoticed, and that is what makes him such a good coach, with former EPL ace Frank McAvennie even going as far as to claim that he is ‘exceptional’ following links to the Celtic job back in March.

Nonetheless, he should certainly be a manager to consider hiring for the Magpies if Bruce were to leave his post.
