'Not surprised at India call-up' – Jadhav

Maharashtra batsman Kedar Jadhav said he wasn’t surprised to get a call-up for the Bangladesh ODIs after a strong Ranji season and impressive outing in the IPL

‘Considering the reach of the tournament, it is imperative to perform in IPL’ – Jadhav•BCCI

Having returned to his hometown, Pune, just a couple of days ago after a personally-satisfying-yet-disastrous IPL campaign from his team’s perspective, Kedar Jadhav was watching X-Men along with a couple of friends on Wednesday afternoon when his phone rang.Jadhav was surprised that the Maharashtra Cricket Association president Ajay Shirke was calling him at a slightly odd hour but wasn’t really surprised to hear what Shirke told him: he had received his maiden call-up to the national squad, for the three-ODI series in Bangladesh to be played next month.”I was thrilled but wasn’t so surprised. Somewhere at the back of my mind I knew that I was in contention in case a couple of regulars are rested,” Jadhav told ESPNcricinfo.” This is something that I have been working hard for all these years. I just hope that I can justify my selection if and when I get an opportunity in the XI.”With Jadhav’s selection, the selectors have, in a way, sent out a signal to all the domestic cricketers that consistent performances may be rewarded, irrespective of a player’s age. A comparatively smaller build gives him the impression of being in his early twenties, but the right-hand batsman is ten months shy of turning 30.Through his decade-long first-class career for Maharashtra, Jadhav has been considered as a limited-overs’ specialist. He has been a regular in the Deodhar Trophy (inter-zonal one-day championship) and the Challenger Trophy for half a decade. However, it took a phenomenal season with the bat in the Ranji Trophy for Jadhav to convince the selectors.During the 2013-14 Ranji season, Jadhav tallied 1223 runs, the fourth-highest in a season in the tournament’s history, to help Maharashtra make their first Ranji final since 1992-93. Following his six centuries in the Ranji season, Jadhav was one of the few bright spots in Delhi Daredevils’ poor IPL campaign.Though he scored only 149 runs in ten innings, his ability to consistently deliver under pressure and finish an innings stood out. With four Daredevils’ matches remaining, a confident Jadhav told the IPL’s official broadcasters in a pre-match interaction that he was hoping to be picked for the Bangladesh tour.”With the IPL having prolonged the domestic season, it is imperative to do well in the IPL. Considering the reach of the tournament, it is imperative to perform in IPL, irrespective of the kind of Ranji or Vijay Hazare (domestic 50-over) season you have. I am glad that I could continue scoring runs even during the IPL, especially when the team needed them the most,” Jadhav said.Notwithstanding Munaf Patel’s call-up to the national side in 2005-06 when the fast bowler was playing for Maharashtra as a professional, Jadhav is the first home-grown Maharashtra player to be selected for India in a decade. Dheeraj Jadhav, the opening batsman, was the last player from the state to be picked for an India squad, before the final Test of the 2004-05 home series against Australia and the tour to Zimbabwe the following year. While Dheeraj didn’t get an India cap, Kedar is hopeful that he will be more fortunate than his namesake.

Will Dubai provide more for spinners?

Going into the second Test, it will be a match-up between Sri Lanka’s batting and Pakistan’s bowling

Andrew Fidel Fernando and Umar Farooq07-Jan-20140:00

Arnold: Ajmal a bigger threat in Dubai

Match factsJanuary 8-12, 2014
Start time 1000 local (0600 GMT)Big PictureIf there is a pitch in the UAE that might make amends for the anticlimactic fourth and fifth days in Abu Dhabi, it is the surface in Dubai. In the last match at the venue, spinners accounted for 12 first-innings scalps and the match ended with a day to spare. Rangana Herath had done marginally better than Saeed Ajmal in the first Test, but in truth, neither were ever really a major threat. If either finds assistance in Dubai, it is unlikely the batsmen can play out another draw.As many as five Test matches have been played at Dubai International Stadium with four ending up with a result. With the series locked at 0-0, a draw obviously will not be a satisfying result for both teams.Pakistan’s biggest aim will be to guard against complacency. Despite taking a 179-run lead in the first innings, they had to toil hard to salvage the match; at one stage they had been in a position to win but Sri Lanka’s batsman changed the game to give Pakistan a scare. Big runs are what captain Misbah-ul-Haq and coach Dav Whatmore are endeavouring for. Pakistan might be the better bowling side but they still need their batsman to stand up.With Ahmed Shahzad and Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan’s top order looked to be a settled one but they might tweak the opening combination, bringing in left-hander Shan Masood in place of Khurram Manzoor – who combined 29 runs in the first Test following his previous back-to-back ducks.Saeed Ajmal will want to make up for an unproductive Abu Dhabi Test•AFP

Sri Lanka’s top order may feel they have an edge, however, if the match becomes a spin-bowling shootout. Ajmal’s 49 wicketless overs in the second innings in Abu Dhabi gave the visiting batsmen an extended view of his variations, and in any case, Sri Lanka have been Pakistan’s most frequent foe in the past five years. Rangana Herath also bowled over 56 overs at Pakistan during the Test, but he is less reliant on mystery, owing more of his success to flight and guile. Still, Sri Lanka would do well to be count on Ajmal making an impact in what are effectively his home conditions.Sri Lanka’s batting has also strummed up some form in the first Test, where only Dimuth Karunaratne and Mahela Jayawardene failed to cross 50. The challenge to Sri Lanka’s young players is to build consistency into their cricket, particularly as Pakistan will have run their own analysis of each opposition batsman.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)

Pakistan: DLWLW
Sri Lanka: DWDLL
In the spotlightSri Lanka seam bowlers Shaminda Eranga and Suranga Lakmal did not earn outstanding figures in Abu Dhabi, but the discipline they displayed an unsuspected positive. Having come into the series with startlingly little match-practice, they have now also warmed to their work with 87 collective overs. If the surface is as dry as it is expected to be, perhaps they will not be penetrative, but Sri Lanka have sought to build pressure as a unit in recent years, and the team will hope their long, accurate spells in Abu Dhabi can be recreated in Dubai. The second innings in Abu Dhabi had proved an unproductive one for Saeed Ajmal, the fifth time he failed to take a wicket in an innings. He’s got 34 wickets in Dubai, the most taken by a bowler at Dubai International Stadium and once again expectations are high on him. He remains Pakistan’s biggest threat.Team newsLahiru Thirimanne and Nuwan Kulasekara have both left the UAE with injury and Kusal Perera landed in the UAE about 36 hours before the next match is to begin. Having had such success with the batting line-up from the first Test however, Angelo Mathews is unlikely to change his top seven. The only player who may be switched out is Sachithra Senanayake, who had a mediocre debut, albeit on an unresponsive surface. Uncapped offspinner Dilruwan Perera might replace him, but if Sri Lanka believe the grass on the pitch will make a significant impact, there is a chance Nuwan Pradeep could play instead.
Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Kaushal Silva, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4. Mahela Jayawardene, 5. Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 6. Angelo Mathews (capt), 7. Dinesh Chandimal, 8. Sachithra Senanayake/ Dilruwan Perera/Nuwan Pradeep, 9 Shaminda Eranga, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Suranga LakmalPakistan’s first-choice wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal was injured during the first Test, and Sarfraz Ahmed has arrived to take his place. Pakistan could play two specialist spinners with Rahat Ali possibly sitting out.Pakistan (probable): 1. Ahmed Shehzad, 2. Shan Masood/Khurram Manzoor, 3. Mohammad Hafeez, 4. Younis Khan, 5. Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6. Asad Shafiq, 7. Bilawal Bhatti, 8. Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9. Saeed Ajmal, 10. Abdur Rehman, 11. Junaid KhanPitch and conditionsThe Dubai stadium has some of the most predictable weather in the world, but if any team can bring rain to the desert, it’s Sri Lanka. There has been little sun in the 48 hours before the match, which means there is a chance the pitch is a little less dry than usual. There is a veneer of live grass, but perhaps not enough to alter the fundamental characteristics of the surface.Stats and trivia Pakistan have won only one match in the last 12 against Sri Lanka, but that victory came in Dubai in 2011Saeed Ajmal has 34 wickets in Dubai at 20.11. Rangana Herath has three at 39.33. Quotes”Sachithra and Dilruwan bowl quite differently. Dilruwan turns the ball a lot usually, while Sachithra bowls very good lines and lengths. If we play Dilruwan, that would be his debut as well, and he’d be under the same pressure that Sachithra was. Both those bowlers are good and anyone will be under pressure on Test debut. We’re not trying to knock Sachithra’s confidence – we want him to develop for the future.”

Mubarak, bowlers engineer Ruhuna win

ScorecardA silken 18-ball 36 from Mahela Jayawardene and a half-century from Dinesh Chandimal was not enough to keep Uthura Yellows in the hunt for a final spot, as Ruhuna Reds defended an impressive total to win by 21 runs. No team has yet won batting second in the tournament, and chasing Ruhuna’s 162 for 6 on a wearing pitch was always going to be a difficult task.Uthura, however, were well placed after ten overs at 85 for 1, but Mahela Udawatte’s dismissal for 34 in the 12th triggered a collapse as Uthura lost the remaining eight wickets for just 50 runs. Chandimal fought on with a 40-ball 50 – the highest of the tournament, but none of the other batsmen could manage more than five runs, as Uthura were eventually bowled out for 141.Ruhuna’s batting had no obvious heroes, but four batsmen breached 20 striking at more than a run-a-ball, as they maintained a fine run rate throughout. Tillakaratne Dilshan kick-started the innings by hitting four consecutive fours off Thisara Perera’s first over, and although he was dismissed soon after, Kusal Perera chimed in with three boundaries and a six, on his way to 28. Seekkuge Prasanna then added 26 off just 17 deliveries, as Ruhuna seemed poised for a big total.Uthura’s spinners, spearheaded by Akila Dananjaya, restricted the flow of runs in the middle overs, but there was enough pace around for Ruhuna’s total to keep moving at a lively pace. Jehan Mubarak added a late onslaught with an unbeaten 22-ball 31, and put up 53 for the sixth wicket with Angelo Perera to take Ruhuna to 162 in 20 overs.Jayawardene was in supreme touch in Uthura’s response, with opening partner Mahela Udawatte also finding the boundary with ease, but Jayawardene departed for 36 from 18, nicking a wide delivery to the keeper. Udawatteand Chandimal built on the quick start, but Udawatte’s demise brought a string of quick wickets for Ruhuna’s pacers, and the chase went quickly astray after the 12th over. Ishan Jayaratne was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 4 for 23.Chandimal had been in poor form in internationals and will take some solace in his personal score, but having lost both matches so far, he and Uthura Yellows will be playing for a little more than just pride when they face off against Basnahira Greens on Wednesday.

Mourinho detalha mudança tática do Santos, critica público e traça planos

ELOGIOS A SÁNCHEZ!

Tudo melhorou no segundo tempo – analisou.

Dominant PNG progress to knockouts with easy win

Papua New Guinea progressed to the knockout stages with a dominant eight-wicket win against Nepal

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Malahide17-Jul-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:42

‘Happy to steer team home’ – Valla

Another limp batting effort by Nepal has left them teetering on the brink of missing the knockout stage as Papua New Guinea produced another swarming display in a dominant eight-wicket win. PNG secured their place in the playoffs next week with a commanding performance – they inserted Nepal and bowled them out for 93 before reaching the target with 35 balls to spare.PNG set the tone for what was to come early on with the first of three run-outs to claim the wicket of Sagar Pun. The Nepal batsman was short coming back for a third run to the point boundary when Charles Amini’s relay to wicketkeeper Jack Vare beat his dive in the third over.Nepal continued to stay aggressive as Pradeep Airee took on PNG’s seamers, with three pulls off Willie Gavera through the leg side boundary to start off the seventh over. Airee was fortunate to survive the second of those on 17 when Lega Siaka spilled a sitter five yards in from the rope in what was PNG’s only blemish of the first innings.Renewed focus came from PNG with the introduction of Mahuru Dai, who struck with his first ball to kick off the eighth over as Gyanendra Malla’s attempted sweep deflected off the bottom of his gloves and onto leg stump to make it 48 for 2. Airee fell to end the ninth for 29, swinging across the line to John Reva as a full length ball just kissed off stump halfway up.Nepal’s hopes rested on captain Paras Khadka but he failed for the third match running. This time he fell for 5, driving loosely to Kila Pala at point who took a low diving catch for Dai’s second wicket in a spell of 2 for 11 in four overs. Sharad Vesawkar was the only batsman besides the opening pair to reach double-figures, but was the first of two wickets to fall in the 15th, lofting Norman Vanua to mid-off. Dai reappeared three balls later at midwicket as an underhanded strike from point blank range found Bhandari short to make it 79 for 6.The last four wickets fell for 11 runs with Rajesh Pulami trying to slog into the wind coming from the south and was easily caught 20 yards in from the midwicket rope by Amini off Assad Vala. Basant Regmi was the third run out victim, setting off from the non-striker’s end for a run to cover but Vanua’s throw to Vare was swift and accurate.A low full toss from Reva came off the toe of Sompal Kami’s bat and floated to Vala at midwicket, before the innings was ended four balls into the 20th over – a thick edge off Vala carried comfortably to short third man. Vala claimed the most economical figures of the innings with his 2 for 7 in 2.4 overs.Sompal Kami did his best to help Nepal save face in the field, finding Siaka’s outside edge off his second ball. His pace bowling partner Karan KC could not tie down the opposite end though, leaking 16 runs in a punishing third over. Regmi started with two leg side wides but on his first legal delivery beat Ura in flight as Bhandari completed the stumping to make it 53 for 2 in the eighth over.Vala and Pala saw PNG the rest of the way through with an unbroken 46-run stand. Pala ended 22 not out after hitting Khadka for a six over midwicket and another towering blow over the sightscreen to bring scores level at the end of the 15th. Vala ended the match one ball later with a drive over the rope at long off to end with an unbeaten 34 off 44 balls, clinching the Man of the Match award.

Vettori: 'Whatever ground we go to, our batting is going to be aggressive'

Both Pat Cummins and Nitish Reddy and fit and “very keen to go”

Shashank Kishore22-Mar-20253:14

Cricinformed – SRH’s six-hitters set for a new IPL high?

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will maintain their ultra-aggressive batting approach from last season, head coach Daniel Vettori has said ahead of their IPL 2025 opener against Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad.”Whatever ground we go to, we have an understanding that the batting team is going to be aggressive,” Vettori said. “The only thing that can mitigate that is the pitch, but most times, the pitches in IPL are very flat.”When you come to these grounds, you know exactly what to expect. You know how the batsmen are going come against you. It’s quite…..maybe not fun is the right word, it’s a good challenge for a bowling group to try and work their way through that.”That’s what Pat [Cummins, the captain] addressed the bowling group the other day. He said the expectation is on the batters to do all the work, score the runs and the bowlers can sort of feed into that. If we get those days to make it all work, it’s going go a long way in us winning games. The onus on batting group to score runs and for the bowlers to be able to mitigate that.”Vettori expressed excitement about the expectations surrounding the team and hoped they could replicate the intensity that took them to last year’s final.”Expectations bring some excitement,” he said. “Expectations are built around the performances of last year and the quality of the team we’ve been able to put together at the back end of last season and into the auction.”As a franchise, we’re really excited about the season because we have that foundation from the five players [Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Reddy, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma] we retained and how well they performed last year, hopefully we have the squad to perform as well this year if not better.”Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who claimed the second-highest run tally for an opening pair last year, will continue at the top for SRH. Vettori also welcomed Ishan Kishan into the side, calling him a “huge addition”.”Don’t think we’ll be changing the opening combination, Ishan complements them as well as anyone,” Vettori said. “He has a similar stye of game, left-handed, the ability to take on all types of bowlers. We’re very lucky to have him part of the squad to complement those two, then have Nitish and Klaasen and few of our younger batters to be able to come into the squad as well. We look at that as a huge addition to the team.”Vettori was pleased to see a fit-again Cummins and Nitish, with Cummins recovering from an ankle issue that forced him to miss the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, Nitish, one of their breakout stars from IPL 2024, comes back following a rehab from a side strain that kept him out of action for a month.”They’ve come through their training sessions really well,” Vettori said. “They had injuries around January, it’s been an extended period since they played but they’ve also had time to recover. When they play as much cricket as they do, it’s sometimes nice to be able to get the chance to refresh.”Both of them are eager and excited about the season. That’s a great position to have. Sometimes when you come into the IPL, it’s the end of a very long season, players can be slightly jaded, but those two are very keen to go.”Cummins will lead a strong pace battery that has two other prolific performers in Mohammed Shami and Harshal Patel – bowlers who won the purple cap in IPL 2023 and 2024 respectively.”Shami two years ago was purple cap winner, Harshal [won it] last year – they are two big additions,” he said. “We know it is big shoes to fill from Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar] and Nattu [T Natarajan] – stalwarts of the Sunrisers, who mean much to the franchise.”It was hard to see them go, but that’s the dynamic of the auction. You have to be as nimble as possible to take opportunities. To see Shami come to us, bowl so well in the Champions Trophy is fantastic, those two can complement what Pat brings to the table.”
