Moussa Djenepo is Ralph Hasenhuttl’s one Southampton concern

Whilst Southampton have enjoyed a superb start to the Premier League season, currently occupying fifth place in the top-flight ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, Moussa Djenepo’s performances may be a cause for concern for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The 22-year-old winger has been a regular in the Austrian’s side in the absence of Nathan Redmond but has just one goal and no assists in his eight appearances in the top-flight so far this season (per WhoScored).

Since joining from Standard Liege in the summer of 2019, the tricky winger has made 29 appearances for the Saints, contributing just three goals and two assists (per Transfermarkt).

Although this is not the most impressive record, the youngster has shown that he is capable of winning games for Southampton all by himself, with his two individually superb goals against Sheffield United and Brighton earning Hasenhuttl’s side wins last season.

His goal against the Blades earned him a lot of praise from Redmond, with his teammate saying:

“He is a super-talented boy who is so open-minded and eager to learn every single day. He gets on well with everybody and has fitted in so well. I think that’s allowed to be free and almost naïve when he gets the ball because he wants to go and show people what he’s got which helps us out as a team.” (per Daily Echo)

However, with Redmond having returned from injury in the Saints’ recent win against Brighton, Djenepo could soon find himself out of Hasenhutt’s first team, unless his performances improve.

During the game against Graham Potter’s side, the Mali international showed his inexperience at times, as he was booked early on but made some risky challenges after the caution, before being taken off at half-time.

He also struggled to offer much from both an attacking and a defensive point of view, which makes you wonder how long the Austrian manager will keep faith in Djenepo to be a starter in his team.

The winger has certainly shown that he can beat a man with his excellent trickery and dribbling ability, but he needs to work on doing that more consistently, as well as producing a better end product if he wants to keep his place in the Southampton first-team.

Celtic long game over Charlton’s Alfie Doughty could be a Lawwell masterclass

Celtic signed no fewer than six players during the summer transfer window but it seems one name escaped their grasp – for the time being at least…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, the defending Scottish champions could revisit their pursuit of Charlton Athletic starlet Alfie Doughty, either in January or next year.

He claims that the club are playing the long game after having bids knocked back throughout the last few months.

It’s been previously claimed that the Hoops had at least two offers rejected in September and that they had been planning to offer £800k for him in a third ploy, but evidently, that did not come to fruition.

The 20-year-old could be signed on a pre-contract for free in the winter window.

Lawwell masterclass

Neil Lennon did get an addition in the wing-back position having landed AC Milan outcast Diego Laxalt on loan, though that is merely a temporary switch at this stage which means he could be in the same scenario next summer.

And waiting for it too all unfold over the young League One winger could prove to be a masterstroke from Celtic chief Peter Lawwell as instead of paying close to seven figures for what could be a generational talent, he may well get him for free in the next three to nine months.

Doughty has begun the season in superb form for the Addicks, scoring one goal in four league starts whilst also averaging 2.8 tackles, two key passes, 1.8 dribbles and 1.3 shots per game, via WhoScored.

This makes him seem like the ideal man for that left wing-back position long-term.

Former Kingstonian boss Leigh Dynan gave the youngster his debut in the men’s game, and once dubbed Doughty a “tremendous footballer” with a “big future” before also adding: “There’s a diamond there to be polished. I can assure you that.”

Lawwell’s shrewd stance could mean that it’s the Bhoys’ diamond to polish and by the time he arrives at Parkhead, he may well have enjoyed a full season under his belt – another plus for Lennon.

They must revisit this deal in January.

Newcastle United: Magpies set to confirm signing of Norwich City ace Jamal Lewis

Newcastle United are set to confirm the signing of Jamal Lewis as Sky Sports have reported that the Norwich City ace is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a £15 million move.

As per the outlet, the player sat out Northern Ireland’s 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Norway in the UEFA Nations League last night in order to complete his move to St. James’ Park.

Indeed, the Tyneside club seem to have beaten off competition from the likes of Leicester City and Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s team reportedly having a £10 million bid rejected for the Canaries man.

Despite the relegation of NCFC from the top flight to the EFL Championship in the last season under German coach Daniel Farke, Lewis still had a relatively good term at Carrow Road.

In the 28 games that he played in England’s highest division, the 22-year old showed his defensive qualities by averaging two clearances and 1.8 tackles per match, while also demonstrating his attacking prowess by averaging 1.2 successful dribbles per game, according to Sofascore.

It looks as if, pending a successful medical, Steve Bruce may have won the race to sign the promising left-back, who could fill in a problem position for the English coach given that Danny Rose and Jetro Willems have both returned to Tottenham Hotspur and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively following both of their loan spells in the North East in the 2019/20 campaign.

At just 22 years of age as well, Lewis has the potential to occupy that role for the Magpies for several years to come.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans unhappy with Europa League draw

Glasgow Rangers have found out who they will be playing if they progress to the third round of Europa League qualifying.

The Gers must first beat Lincoln Red Imps in Gibraltar – that may not be quite as easy as it looks given that they beat Celtic not too long ago in the same competition. However, they will be hoping that they have too much for their opponents. If they do win, they will play either Willem II or Progres Niederkorn.

The Ibrox outfit have unfinished business with the Luxembourg side – this is the third time in four years that they will have faced them. So far, the overall score stands at one victory apiece. In 2017, Niederkorn won 2-1 on aggregate, whilst the 54-time Scottish champions won 2-0 themselves last year.

This has attracted the attention of the Gers supporters, and it seems they are unhappy with the draw – firstly, they are not happy to be playing the same opponent once again, whilst they have also complained about being drawn away for the second match in a row.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Man United news: Ole eyeing young World Cup winner as alternative to Sancho

Manchester United have been after Jadon Sancho for quite some time now. But despite an occasional win in the negotiations and their personal terms with the player, the whole process with Borussia Dortmund is starting to feel a bit tiring and like hitting a brick wall.

For that reason, the Premier League titans have decided to ensure they have a plan B in case the youngster ends up staying in Germany. According to a new report from ESPN, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might turn his gaze on Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

Of course, they still believe Sancho is attainable but following Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc’s words, a huge question mark hangs above that deal. He sad, as quoted by ESPN, that they “plan on having Sancho in our team this season,” claiming the decision on his future was “final.”

And now, the same source outlines Man United have already held informal talks with Barcelona’s young World Cup winner who still has two years left on his contract with the Catalan giants.

It has to be noted, however, that the Frenchman hasn’t played a competitive game of football since November last year as he underwent surgery on his hamstring the following February.

Still, the 23-year-old is certainly a huge talent with his whole career in front of him. And due to his misfortune at Barcelona, he just might be a cheaper and more attainable asset for the Red Devils.

Of course, they would still have to convince him that the move to England is the right one to make but for now, Sancho is still the main focus.

Verdict

Despite his struggles in Catalonia, Dembele would be a massive signing for Man United. Yes, his stint in La Liga hasn’t exactly been great but when he’s fit and sharp, the Frenchman is a serious talent and a worthy Sancho alternative.

Not to mention that his value has dropped massively since Barcelona first purchased him from Dortmund themselves.

Arsenal fans react to former target Dayot Upamecano’s display for RB Leipzig

After conceding a disappointing 51 goals in the Premier League last season – only Manchester United and West Ham let in more in the top ten – Arsenal were understandably on the look-out for a centre-back all summer. And following Laurent Koscielny’s controversial departure, that need intensified greatly.

The Gunners eventually brought in William Saliba, but he was loaned straight back to St Etienne for the season. And on deadline day, the north Londoners raided their Premier League rivals Chelsea for David Luiz’s signature. But one man who they were reportedly keen on all summer but couldn’t get their hands on by the end of the window, was RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

And in Tuesday night’s game against Borussia Dortmund, the Frenchman enjoyed a fine performance. As per Sofascore, his 7.4 match rating was only second behind Timo Werner amongst his teammates, and he made five tackles, won eight ground duels, had 111 touches and even created two big chances. And after seeing his performance, Arsenal fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their summer target.

Some Gunners fans even raised the tantalising prospect of potentially seeing Upamecano partner up with French compatriot Saliba at the Emirates next season.

The more performances like the one he produced on Tuesday night, the more expensive Upamecano will become. The Gunners perhaps missed a trick by missing out on him in the summer, but they will be hoping that they don’t live to regret that.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans react to this starlet’s goal-scoring display for the U23s.
