Tottenham Hotspur: Fans couldn’t believe Mauricio Pochettino didn’t take off Eric Dier

Tottenham Hotspur fans were left fuming when Mauricio Pochettino made his second substitution of their encounter with Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

The Argentine manager appeared to make the decision to shore things up at the back when he brought on Juan Foyth in the 70th minute and protect the one-goal advantage they had at that stage of the game, however supporters were far from impressed with the choice of substitution he made.

Whilst Dele Alli was the player to make way for the South American defender, a plethora of Spurs fans were left fuming with the fact that Eric Dier was left on the pitch and still had not been withdrawn from proceedings.

Indeed, the England international would remain on the pitch for the entirety of the game and could not help Tottenham from conceding a George Baldock goal and ultimately leave the match with just one of the three points that were on offer.

Judging by the statistics collected by WhoScored, the 25-year-old did not have the worst of games as he managed six clearances and won six aerial duels, although he did not manage a single tackle or interception, nor make a difference in an attacking sense.

However, that did not stop fans on Twitter from slamming Pochettino’s decision not to withdraw Dier, with many of them angry the defender remained.

Here are just some of their reactions…

Tottenham fans, what did you make of Pochettino’s decision to keep Dier on? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them below!

Nottingham Forest have to take a risk in January despite glum transfer message

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Penny pinching will not end in success.

That’s the policy that Nottingham Forest need to adapt when they approach the upcoming transfer window, or they could end up regretting it big time.

What’s he said?

Speaking during a Q&A on Nottinghamshire Live, journalist Barry Cooper was asked about what the chances were Forest would go in for someone like Dwight Gayle in January. However, he provided a rather glum response.

“Because of the system that Forest operate with, bringing somebody in of genuine quality, that would make a difference is not going to be an easy task, especially when you’re trying to balance risk against reward and stay within FFP.”

A risk they have to take

Whilst we have raised on FFC how going for someone like Gayle might not work for Nottingham Forest, the principle remains the same, whether it be about signing him or any other player, striker or not, that Forest think will help them get promoted.

With the amount of money that waits on the other side in the Premier League, you can’t afford to penny pinch, you simply have to take that risk.

You don’t get anywhere in this division without a little bit of aggression giving you a boost.

If you take a look at Fulham back in 2017/18, they were sixth going into January transfer deadline day, then they went out and signed Aleksander Mitrovic, 12 goals later, they find themselves lifting the playoff trophy at the end of May as they got promoted.

The same goes for West Ham United in 2011/12, they went out and brought in Ricardo Vaz Te on transfer deadline day, and he went on to score the winner in the playoff final.

If there is a player that you truly believe will be of benefit to you in the hope for promotion, then you have to go out and get him and damn the expense.

The fans won’t blame you for being ambitious and missing out, because at least you showed that you were willing to put your money where our mouth was, literally in this example.

Deal with the consequences later, but when the opportunity presents itself, don’t be scared to push the boat out and make the deal, rather than end up regretting it when he puts on past you to keep you down.

Newcastle United fans react as FA confirm Sean Longstaff’s three-game ban

Some Newcastle United supporters have been reacting on social media after the Football Association confirmed that Sean Longstaff will serve a three-game ban for the red card shown against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Longstaff was issued his marching orders in the 82nd-minute of the Toon’s 1-1 draw on Sunday, with referee Kevin Friend deeming the 21-year-old’s challenge on Ruben Neves to be worthy of a straight sending off.

Toon boss Steve Bruce slammed Friend’s decision after the final whistle, feeling the call was harsh and that Neves’ exaggerated reaction contributed to Longstaff being sent off.

Bruce conceded that Longstaff was not in control of his high-boot, but added that the position of his foot was an after product of the midfielder’s earlier challenge.

Newcastle could have challenged the FA’s decision to uphold a three-game ban, although opted against lodging an appeal following further reviews carried out on Monday.

Longstaff will now be unavailable for selection against West Ham United, Bournemouth and Aston Villa, before returning to the fold when the Magpies host Manchester City at the end of November.

Bruce will have Isaac Hayden back on hand after the midfielder’s three-game ban for a red card picked up against Leicester City expired at the weekend, though.

Here are some of the messages shared on Longstaff’s ban…

Leeds fans crying out for Eddie Nketiah to finally start

Has Eddie Nketiah just made his biggest statement to Marcelo Bielsa yet? Quite possibly.

The youngster was in lively form for England U21s on Tuesday evening as he bagged twice, missed a penalty and also saw one of his initial strikes go down as an own goal, something that robbed him of a hat-trick.

It was an eventful evening for the 20-year-old who must now surely be closer than ever to starting for Leeds.

A bunch of eagle-eyed supporters took to Twitter after the game and they were all crying for the same thing as the U21s saw off Austria in comfortable fashion.

Huge sections of fans demanded he started from this point onwards as one went as far as claiming that Bielsa needed to go if he didn’t play him.

Nketiah was branded a natural goal scorer by one supporter who also labelled his fears over Arsenal potentially recalling him.

The loanee has yet to start a single league outing for the Whites but is still their joint top scorer alongside Patrick Bamford on four.

Reports this week have suggested that Bristol City are still sniffing around the forward after he rejected them last summer.

Here’s what Leeds fans were all saying.

Tottenham’s hopes of beating Bayern Munich rest in hands of Jan Vertonghen

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Tottenham Hotspur will look to get their first Champions League win of the season when they host Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, and their hopes of doing that could rest in the hands of Jan Vertonghen in north London.

While Spurs will be focusing on producing a positive performance and result themselves following disappointment last time out against Olympiacos, but there is one man they will be need to be aware of.

Robert Lewandowski has become known as a prolific centre-forward throughout his career, and it has been no different this term with the Poland international scoring 12 goals in just nine appearances in all competitions prior to his side’s trip to the English capital.

The 31-year-old will likely be leading the line for the Bavarian giants at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, meaning that Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are likely to be the duo tasked with dealing with him.

In his first European appearance of the campaign against Red Star Belgrade last month, he had 10 shots – albeit he only found the net once – according to WhoScored.

He has also averaged 4.8 shots in the Bundesliga so far this term, which suggests that not only does he know how to get in the best positions, but also that he isn’t afraid to have a go when the opportunity presents itself.

Meanwhile, Tottenham looked defensively vulnerable with Vertonghen and Alderweireld at the heart of the backline against Olympiacos last time out, conceding two goals having taken a 2-0 lead in Athens.

The former gave a penalty away in that match in Greece as Mauricio Pochettino’s men collapsed, and the 32-year-old needs to be doing better than that when he comes up against the in-form Lewandowski.

Of course, there are also question marks hanging over his head with the north London outfit reportedly only willing to offer him a new one-year contract, so Tuesday could be the ideal opportunity to prove why he deserves longer than that by silencing one of the best centre-forwards in the world.

Everton new boy Alex Iwobi has a tough job dislodging Gylfi Sigurdsson in the centre

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Everton were one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League this summer, making a whopping seven signings to add to their ranks.

Marcel Brands worked hard alongside Marco Silva to bring in Jonas Lossl, Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Djibril Sidibe, Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi to bolster the Toffees in almost every area.

The last capture of the window was Iwobi, signed from Arsenal on deadline day in a deal worth £34m.

A lot has been made about where the Nigerian operates best – the Gunners used him as a winger, whilst he plays in the middle for his country.

As we have already detailed, using the 23-year-old in the middle seems to get the best out of Iwobi, whilst he has already declared that the Gunners were playing him out of position and that he prefers the centre.

So, who does he have to dislodge at Goodison Park if he wants that role? None other than Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Iceland international finished as Everton’s joint-top scorer in the league last term with 13 goals, and also notched six assists in what was an excellent campaign for the former Swansea man.

Judging by the statistical comparison above, Iwobi has a tough job on his hands to get ahead of the 29-year-old in the pecking order.

Sigurdsson scored 10 more goals than Iwobi last season in the league, and also took 1.3 more shots than the Nigerian’s one per game.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

Everton’s No.10 also recorded 0.8 more key passes per game, and his impressive goal tally and all round importance means he is currently one of the first names on the team-sheet.

If Iwobi truly does want to start playing his football regularly in the centre as opposed to out wide, removing the Icelandic playmaker from his role looks set to be a mammoth task.

Aston Villa fans show their delight at Trezeguet arrival

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday morning, Aston Villa confirmed that they had completed a deal for Egypt international Trezeguet, subject to a visa and international clearance.

Villa have been making huge moves in this summer’s transfer window as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has moved to Villa Park from Kasimpasa for an ‘undisclosed fee’, according to Villa’s official website.

That said, BBC Sport have listed the the transfer fee at £8.75m.

Trezeguet, who represented Egypt at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations, managed 25 goals and 18 assists in 71 appearances for Kasimpasa between 2017 and 2019.

As expected, the Villa fans have been on social media reacting to the capture of their latest signing, who could make his competitive debut against Tottenham Hotspur on the first weekend of the new Premier League campaign.

And a selection of the Twitter reaction from the supporters, who are absolutely delighted, can be seen below:

Crystal Palace might already have their next Wan-Bissaka in Tyrick Mitchell

[ad_pod ]Crystal Palace’s academy was once known as a hotbed for exciting young talent. Before their promotion to the Premier League back in 2013, the Eagles were responsible for bringing through the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Nathaniel Clyne, Jonny Williams, Victor Moses, Wayne Routledge, Lewis Grabban and Ben Watson. However, following their return to the top-flight, it appeared as if the focus on the academy began to wane as survival overtook youth development as the number one priority at Selhurst Park. The added financial boost from being in the Premier League perhaps tempted the Eagles to buy rather than organically promote. After six years back in the big time, it seems as if the south Londoners are beginning to turn their attention back to the youngsters.

Academy star Aaron Wan-Bissaka was handed his chance, and spent just a season-and-a-half in the first team before joining Manchester United in a £50m move this summer.

Despite their loss, Palace may already have the next Wan-Bissaka in their ranks in the form of young left-back Tyrick Mitchell.

Of course, the main difference between the pair is that Mitchell plays on the opposite side to the England Under-21 star, but there appear to be some similarities between them aside from that one fundamental difference.

Obviously, tackling is Wan-Bissaka’s main attribute – no defender completed more tackles per game in the Premier League last term, per Whoscored – and he has been labelled ‘The Spider’ for his ability to wrap any one of his eight legs around the ball.

Mitchell was handed his chance as a substitute against FC Luzern this summer in a pre-season game, and despite playing just 25 minutes, he did enough to draw comparisons to Wan-Bissaka from the Palace fans on Twitter, predominantly due to one outstanding last ditch slide tackle.

Indeed, it certainly triggered flashbacks of the £50m man’s defensive style.

Signed from Brentford back in 2016, the 19-year-old Mitchell may well be knocking on Hodgson’s door for a chance in the 2019/20 season, and he will presumably be Patrick van Aanholt’s understudy seeing as Jeffrey Schlupp seems to have been converted to a midfielder by the Palace boss.

The signs are definitely encouraging regarding the teenager’s future in SE25.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

Standing at 5 foot 7, Mitchell was handed a contract extension back in January and has been training with the first-team, which is both beneficial to his development and a telling sign that he could be in Hodgson’s long term plans.

Wan-Bissaka was a relatively unknown prospect before he rose to prominence just like Mitchell.

Could the rise of a second spider be looming on the horizon?
