Gold reveals exciting Spurs transfer update

An exciting update has emerged in Tottenham Hotspur’s hunt for defensive reinforcements in this transfer window…

What’s the word?

It’s believed that the north London outfit will look to add two new centre-backs to their armoury before next season and it seems like they are closing in on their first addition in that regard.

Spurs are thought to be leading the race to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna this summer, according to The Athletic, and the player is keen on joining the Premier League outfit.

The ever-reliable Alasdair Gold at football.london has now delivered a fresh update on their search in a recent YouTube video, in which he said: “I think Tottenham are certainly making moves to get Bologna’s Japanese centre-back Takehiro Tomiyasu. He’s only 22 and he ticks a lot of boxes. He’s not going to be very expensive, probably under £20m.

“From what I am told, the logic behind going for him – and this may ring a bell – [is that] he can play centre-back but he’s essentially a defensive right-back, so think Japhet Tanganga, Juan Foyth. That kind of mould.

“The logic, I understand, in going for Tomiyasu is that he will tuck in to allow [Nuno] Espirito Santo’s system to quickly flip from a back four to a back three, and allow Sergio Reguilon to bomb on like an attacking left wing-back, which we know will get the best out of him.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a done deal but from the sounds of it, it’s certainly a move that Tottenham could make happen.”

Gold then went onto confirm that Spurs are also interested in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, whilst Joachim Andersen, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Fulham last term, and Fiorentina colossus Nikola Milenkovic also remain as other targets.

Fixing a problem

This should come as hugely exciting news for the Spurs faithful as it’s evident that new sporting director Fabio Paratici has already highlighted key areas of weakness and will look to source a solution to give Nuno the best chance of success next season.

Indeed, defensive problems were the Lilywhites’ Achilles heel last term as a combination of individual mistakes and a lack of cohesion saw them finish with the worst goal concession record of any of the traditional ‘big six’.

Toby Alderweireld is entering the final stages of his top-flight career at 32, while Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier both struggled for consistency and were often culprits for those defensive errors, leading to them regularly being in and out of the starting XI.

Tangana has been more utilised as a right-back but still lacks experience, whilst Joe Rodon has rarely seen the pitch since his move from Swansea.

It’s ever so clear that Nuno desperately needs a centre-back or two, so it has to be hugely positive news to see the club linked with so many names, and even more so as it appears that they are close to sealing Tomiyasu.

The Japan international can also play at right-back, where Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty have also struggled to impress, so he effectively solves two problems in one.

That said, the club still need to add another man to that backline but, as outlined above, it’s something they are working on. Perhaps the fans around north London can start to get a little more excited for the new season now.

AND in other news, Paratici can find Spurs’ ideal Bale successor in “special” £22.5m-rated Mendes client…

Fry backs West Ham for another Champions League place challenge

David Moyes and the West Ham hierarchy will have Champions League qualification as a goal this upcoming season, says Peterborough director of football Barry Fry.

The Hammers surprisingly came close to achieving that in the last campaign, just missing out after finishing two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in sixth.

They were, however, able to qualify for the Europa League, meaning European nights will be coming to the London Stadium this year.

Going forward, though, Fry believes Europe’s elite competition will be the aim for West Ham.

“Knowing the three Davids as I do, they’ll want to improve on this year’s position and really have a right go at getting in the Champions League,” Fry exclusively told TT.

“I think again with the right recruitment, signing three or four players that can add to the strength in depth in the squad, then they’ll give it a good go.”

West Ham supporters will surely be delighted to hear about the lofty ambitions of Moyes, David Gold and David Sullivan.

With the likes of London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal really struggling last season, there does look like there could be room for new names to enter the conversation for Champions League qualification. And based on what they have recently shown, West Ham should certainly be aiming to be one of those clubs.

Who could suffer if Everton hire Ferguson?

Whichever way you look at it, Duncan Ferguson is a legend at Everton.

He played 272 times for the Toffees and has managed the club on four occasions, taking interim charge of the club before Carlo Ancelotti was hired.

The Italian has now left the club for a second stint at Real Madrid but Ferguson rejected the chance to move with him.

Instead, he wants the Everton job on a permanent basis as Farhad Moshiri and co bid to find Ancelotti’s replacement.

There are a number of impressive head coaches in the frame to be handed the reins with the likes of Rafa Benitez, Erik ten Hag and David Moyes all on their shortlist.

Ferguson doesn’t possess the same managerial experience but he knows the club inside out and has a great affinity with the supporters.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast last week, Dean Windass commented: “He’s a legend at the football club, he’s got blue blood running through his veins and he’s a very passionate man.

“Give Big Dunc a go, he did very well in temporary charge before Ancelotti. The fans love him, and the fans will be back next year.”

Whether or not the board view him as someone that can take Everton to the next level remains to be seen but if he does join, the club may as well bid farewell to Moise Kean.

The striker has had a troublesome spell at Goodison Park, scoring just four goals in 37 outings for the Toffees.

However, he’s taken French football by storm this term, finishing the campaign with 19 strikes after a loan move to PSG.

Described as “fearless” by Thomas Tuchel, the £25m signing clearly has immense potential. That being said, if Ferguson becomes the permanent manager an exit may grow closer.

He’s already been tipped to leave by various outlets and he doesn’t exactly have the greatest of relationships with Ferguson.

After all, it was the 49-year-old who provided Kean with one of the most embarrassing moments of his career so far.

The youngster was substituted on against Manchester United in December 2019 but lasted just 18 minutes before he was withdrawn by the manager.

Kean cut an extremely sad figure as he trudged down the touchline without a single exchange with Ferguson.

Speaking after the match, the boss said:I just needed to make a substitution to kill a bit of time.”

It was a decision that attracted staunch criticism. In the wake of that remarkable moment, John Arne Riise commented: “He’s destroying this young boy’s confidence.

“He doesn’t even shake his hand. Give him a hug – he’s a young boy. That is the worst thing you can do for any player but especially a young boy who doesn’t speak the language very well.”

Kean would only go on to start four more league matches that term before he was handed a loan spell with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

He’s shown what a huge talent he is away from English shores but it’s unlikely he’s going to have a future in Merseyside. Bring Ferguson into the equation and an exit looks even more inevitable.

Remaining at Everton would surely destroy him even more; he has to get out.

Leeds tipped to finally land nine-goal ace

Former Leeds United star David Norris expects the club to make a real effort to sign Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese this summer and believes the deal may happen.

De Paul has been linked with the Elland Road club since last summer, when Marcelo Bielsa’s team are said to have made a bid worth €35m (£30m).

Udinese held firm and rejected that offer and the playmaker went on to enjoy a superb season in Serie A.

The Argentina international made 36 appearances in the league, scoring nine goals and laying on 10 assists.

The link has not gone away, though, with many reports claiming Leeds could make another bid for De Paul this summer, with the player surely aware of the interest.

And Norris believes that the interest from Bielsa’s men may finally pay off following a year-long flirtation between the two parties, though he is wary of the club being beaten to the punch.

Indeed, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool have also been linked with an interest, so Leeds may have to move quickly if they are to secure De Paul’s signature.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Norris said: “Yeah I think so. That one’s not gone away for a year now. I fully expect that he knows Leeds are interested now.

“Leeds have shown an interest for a long time, so normally with that perseverance, I’d absolutely expect Leeds to try to get that one over the line. He fits their style of play, Leeds will have done due diligence on him and from what we’ve seen of him, and the way Leeds play, he would suit their style of play.

“He seems to want the move, Leeds want it, so I expect Leeds to really go after that one and just hope, potentially, they don’t get gazumped.”

A day of shame for cricket

It was only a few days ago that a headline like that was confined to events of a purely cricketing nature, such as when England reached an all-time low by being bowled out for just 84 by Australia at Old Trafford to lose a match in the NatWest Series

Ralph Dellor18-Jun-2001It was only a few days ago that a headline like that was confined to events of a purely cricketing nature, such as when England reached an all-time low by being bowled out for just 84 by Australia at Old Trafford to lose a match in the NatWest Series. What happened at Headingley on Sunday represented an entirely different situation. Cricket was secondary to the pitch invasion by over-excited elements of the crowd. That resulted in England captain Alec Stewart conceding the game to Pakistan and a steward being taken off to hospital having become the victim of the unruly mob. There was no doubting that Pakistan would have deservedly won. There were 10.1 overs to be bowled, six wickets in hand and only four runs to be scored when a large section of the crowd burst over the boundary rope as if the game had finished. Such was the scale of the pitch invasion, and with a steward lying near the wicket with internal and head injuries, the game had to be regarded as finished. Rather than going out again when the pitch was eventually cleared, Stewart decided that England would accept the inevitable and so the unique entry in the record books: “England conceded the match.”Stewart said “It was a sad decision but it was a decision I felt was right for the long term good of the game. For the sake of the players and the umpires, I felt it was the only decision I could make. Hopefully it will mean that we won’t see scenes like that again and the ICC will now take very, very strong measures to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”John Read, the Director of Corporate Affairs of the England and Wales Cricket Board, acknowledged the gravity of the affair. “It was an incredibly sad day for cricket in this country and we condemn unreservedly what happened,” he said. “We’re resolved to ensure that the grounds are as safe an environment as possible for the players, spectators and umpires and that these sort of things don’t happen in the future.”But what can be done? Heavy fines, like those imposed in Australia for similar behaviour? Extra security, with snarling dogs as seen in South Africa? Fences, as used in Asia? None are usually necessary in England, but there is a dilemma for the authorities. Both crowd invasions in this series have involved predominantly Pakistani supporters, yet most are British citizens. Unlike when there is crowd trouble at football, it is not easy to identify a target for sanctions and punishment. The decision to concede the match was a brave one, and seemed correct at the time it was made. However, it could prove to be a dangerous precedent. It might send the wrong signals to those who seek to affect the outcome of a match. The game at Headingley was as good as over and meant little anyway. It would not be the same in, for example, a tense match that could have implications on qualification for the final stages of a world cup. It should not be up to either captain to concede. There is no provision for that in the regulations and nor should there be. In such circumstances the ICC should have the powers to determine the outcome, including abandoning the match as was threatened at Edgbaston. The scenes there might have been excused a merely exuberant enthusiasm. Perhaps over-exuberant, but nonetheless borne of high spirits. So too, essentially, were those at Headingley, but this time a steward was seriously injured. Next time, someone might be killed. The warnings must be heeded before an unfortunate incident becomes a major tragedy. That is not a question of “if” but “when”. The effects that would have on cricket and the social structure of the country do not bear thinking about.

Leeds suffer Boubakary Soumare blow

Leicester City are expected to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare this summer, acting as an undoubted blow to Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Leicester keen on Soumare

Marcelo Bielsa is expected to add to his squad in the coming months, in order bring new quality to it and ensure the Whites go up another level next season.

Soumare is a player who has been linked with a move to Elland Road, having shone for Lille this season, making 30 appearances in Ligue 1.

The Latest: Leicester set to swoop

Unfortunately, Leicester look set to swoop in ahead of Leeds, with ever-reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming as much on Twitter:

“Leicester are set to complete Boubacary Soumare deal also with last details – final fee will be around €23m to Lille. The agreement is imminent, medicals pending. Soumaré has accepted to join Leicester since February.”

The £20.7million-rated Soumare’s current deal expires in 2022, meaning this is Lille’s last chance to get a hefty fee for the 22-year-old.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Undoubted blow for Leeds

Soumare is an extremely promising young defensive midfielder, so Leeds missing out on him has to be considered a blow.

Bielsa needs to sign someone who can battle Kalvin Phillips for regular starts, partly in order to give the Leeds star a rest from time to time and also to keep competition for places healthy.

Soumare’s defensive qualities in that deep-lying role could have made him an ideal addition – he has averaged 1.4 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 this season – but Leeds must now look elsewhere to sign a similar type of player as Soumare looks to be heading to the King Power Stadium.

In other news, one Leeds player has been tipped to shine next season – find out who the individual in question is here.

Harvey Elliott tipped for big Liverpool role

Former Premier League midfielder Keith Gillespie has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that a strong pre-season could see Harvey Elliott become a regular at Liverpool next season.

Elliott signed for the Reds as a 16-year-old from Fulham, and already showcased his talent in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

But with the teenager in desperate need of regular first-team action, he joined Blackburn on loan for the season, and has lit up the Championship with several standout moments.

Elliott’s form has tailed off in recent months, he’s still managed six goals and 11 assists, a record bettered only by Norwich’s Emiliano Buendia, in 40 league outings.

His impressive performances led to him being nominated for EA Sports Young Player of the Season at the 2021 EFL Awards, although he was pipped by Reading’s Michael Olise.

But Gillespie believes that if Elliott catches Jurgen Klopp’s eye upon his return to Anfield this summer, he might suddenly find himself in the first-team picture.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“It will all depend on what Liverpool want. If Liverpool are happy with the environment he’s in and feel like he needs another year – why not be at Blackburn?

“I think they’ve got big plans for him at Liverpool. He could come back to the club in pre-season and play out of his skin and suddenly find himself in that side week in, week out.”
