All-round Pyrah keeps Yorkshire alive

Richard Pyrah claimed Yorkshire’s best-ever t20 figures at Scarborough as his side beat Durham by three wickets to keep alive their slender hopes of going through to the Friends Life quarter-finals

10-Jul-2011
ScorecardRichard Pyrah claimed Yorkshire’s best-ever t20 figures at Scarborough as his side beat Durham by three wickets to keep alive their slender hopes of going through to the Friends Life quarter-finals. Man of the match Pyrah topped off a great day’s work by thrashing a six to win the match with three balls remaining. In front of a 6,500 crowd, the medium-pacer took five for 16 off his four overs to help restrict Durham to 144 for eight after they had been put in to bat on a slow pitch which made it difficult for batsmen to time their shots. It was the first time that any bowler had taken five wickets for either side in a Yorkshire t20 match and the first time that it had been achieved against Durham who are still fighting to make it into the quarter-finals themselves.Inspired by Pyrah’s fine effort, Yorkshire responded by charging to 150 for seven to record their fifth win of the season. Coming on as first change, Pyrah soon got rid of both openers after Phil Mustard and Gordon Muchall had got Durham off to a bright start with 28 inside four overs, Mustard giving an easy catch to David Wainwright at mid-wicket and Muchall falling to the same fielder. In between these dismissals, Ian Blackwell hit high to Andrew Gale at extra cover off Ben Sanderson, who was making his seasonal debut, and Durham slumped to 39 for four when Paul Collingwood drove Pyrah hard to Adil Rashid at mid-off.Pyrah later returned to fire out Dale Benkenstein and Gareth Breese with consecutive deliveries and he would almost certainly have claimed a hat-trick if Liam Plunkett had not got a nick on to his pad. By far the best of Durham’s batting came from David Miller who flew into Leeds-Bradford airport earlier in the day on rejoining his county after playing for South Africa A in Zimbabwe. He struck the ball sweetly to make 54 off 41 deliveries with four fours and two sixes and he figured in the biggest stand of the innings with Benkenstein (33), the fifth wicket pair adding 75 in nine overs. Miller hammered a six and two fours off three consecutive balls from Wainwright but after driving a big straight six off Rashid he cut the leg-spinner to Gary Ballance at backward point.Yorkshire also began at a furious pace as Gale and Joe Sayers charged to 42 in five overs, Sayers smacking two sixes and a four in his 20 off 12 deliveries before giving Breese the first of his four catches.Gale had hurried on to 34 from 19 balls with five fours and a six by the time he was dismissed by Plunkett. Ballance batted sensibly while wickets fell around him and he finally departed to Chris Rushworth in the penultimate over for 48 with six boundaries, leaving Pyrah to win the match by blasting Mitch Claydon through the legside for four and then six.

Alvinho arriscou e carimbou a trave do time paraense.

Ponting satisfied with World Cup lead-up

Ricky Ponting remains positive despite the numerous injury setbacks that have rocked Australia’s World Cup campaign even before its start

Ricky Ponting remains positive despite the numerous injury setbacks that have rocked Australia’s World Cup campaign even before its start. A host of first- and second-choice players including Mike Hussey, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Clint McKay, Shaun Marsh and Xavier Doherty have failed to make the 15-man squad due to either fresh injuries or ones that did not heal in time. Ponting, however, was not complaining and pointed out that he had no doubts about his team’s chances.”I don’t really care where we start the tournament. It is irrelevant, to tell the truth,” Ponting said, when asked if the injuries had robbed the defending champions of the favourites tag, before highlighting that the same apprehension had been expressed ahead of the 2007 tournament as well. “At the last World Cup, there was a fair bit of negativity about our team, about where we were heading as a one-day team. We’d lost the CB series in Australia, went to New Zealand and lost the series 3-0. You can understand that there were a few doubts about our team. And we know what happened there. We went through it undefeated.”Ponting, playing his fifth, and last, World Cup felt the 6-1 series victory against England had erased the Ashes misery, putting the players in the right frame of mind ahead of the big event. “Our lead-up couldn’t really be much better, having just beaten a pretty good English side 6-1 at home with quite a few of our more senior players not taking part,” he said. “We are in good shape. We’ve got some really good confidence and a bit of momentum around our team. We’ve got a couple of weeks before we need to be playing our absolute best.”Ponting did concede he would dearly miss Hussey, especially with the left-hander’s amazing ability to absorb pressure down the batting order and play the finisher’s act elegantly. But the Australian selectors were sceptical about pushing forward Hussey’s case even though the player himself said later he was expecting to be included. Hussey underwent surgery after picking a serious hamstring injury during the one-day series against England. “Losing Michael Hussey is a big loss to our setup. There is no doubt about it,” Ponting said. “His experience and his knowledge of the game in tournaments like this are almost second to none. We will miss him,” he said, but finished the sentence by saying the other Hussey (David) was now in good position to fill the shoes of his elder sibling. “He’s [David] played well in the last series at home and has started to learn what it takes to bat down in the middle order in a one-day setup,” Ponting said.Jason Krejza, who made his ODI debut in the last match of the England series, was another player Ponting had a lot of faith in. The offspinner found a World Cup berth only after Hauritz failed the fitness test on Tuesday, having bowled a dozen deliveries at what he termed “60 to 70%”, which was not enough to convince the selectors to go with him. Doherty, the original back-up for Hauritz, also suffered a back injury, giving Krejza the opportunity to return to India, where he had made his Test debut, picking a match haul of 12 wickets in Nagpur on the 2008 tour. “He’s a guy that can be a real match-winning bowler for you. He does put a lot of work on the ball and spins the ball a lot. He will appreciate bowling in these conditions here,” Ponting said of his fellow Tasmanian, who had good control over batsmen during the Big Bash where he picked up nine wickets in seven matches at 6.36 runs per over.Ponting said Krejza could play a crucial role if he bowled according to the situation on the slower pitches in the subcontinent, where slow bowlers have a wider say, especially in the crucial middle overs. “Any international bowler you have, you want them to be able to play both roles – attacking and defense,” Ponting said. “If we get the right mix of guys around him as well – [Brett] Lee, [Shaun] Tait, [Mithcell] Johnson, [John] Hastings, [Doug] Bollinger – all fairly attacking bowlers, there should not be any reason why we will not able to break partnerships in this tournament,” Ponting said. “It’s exciting to have someone like him in the group. He’s a noted wicket-taker and if he bowls his best in these conditions, he could have a really big impact on some of the games that we play.”

Tottenham Hotspur: Conte gives green-light for Reguilon exit

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning to sell left-back Sergio Reguilon this summer.

The Lowdown: Conte’s second-choice

The 25-year-old has struggled to cement a place in Antonio Conte’s wing-back system, but with Ryan Sessegnon sustaining a hamstring injury against Everton last month, the door opened for the Spaniard’s return to the starting XI.

However, Reguilon was dropped from the side that played out a goalless draw at the Brentford Community Stadium as Sessegnon returned to fitness, which has fuelled speculation that the former’s future at Spurs might be up in the air.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now, it’s believed that a Spanish club have registered their interest in the six-time international ahead of the upcoming transfer window, and Conte is ready to cut him loose.

The Latest: Interest from the homeland

According to Football Insider, a direct club source has stated that the north London giants will ‘listen to offers’ for the £25.2m-rated ace at the end of the season, and would be happy to sell him ‘at the right price’.

The report goes on to say that the fee needed to complete a deal would be ‘far less’ than the initial £43m buy-back option that’s available to Real Madrid, so the Lilywhites will not bank a significant profit.

The Verdict: Right time to go

Having only made 22 Premier League starts this campaign, not to mention the fact that he has dropped down the pecking order since Conte has taken charge, it would be no surprise to see Reguilon look elsewhere in a bid to find more game time.

The full-back has shown glimpses of quality throughout his time in England, scoring two goals and providing nine assists in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt, but has never quite managed to hit the heights that the hierarchy would have no doubt been hoping for.

Once dubbed as being a “phenomenal” player by Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold, Reguilon clearly has the potential to have an established successful career, but as long as the Italian manager is at the helm, it’s highly likely that it won’t be in the capital.

In other news, Conte has been hit by yet another brutal piece of injury news…

Sachin Tendulkar has surged to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen, for the first time since 2002. Tendulkar’s heroics in the Test series against Australia earned him 82 rating points, taking him to 891, 17 clear of Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara in the second spot. Virender Sehwag, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Mahela Jayawardene completed the top five.List of dates when Sachin Tendulkar claimed top spot

November 18, 1994 (34 and 85 v West Indies in Mumbai)

March 6, 1998 (4 and 155 v Australia in Chennai)

October 15, 1998 (By default, above Steve Waugh)

This is the ninth time Tendulkar has become the top-ranked Test batsman in the world, and the first since the new ratings system came into place. He held the position for the first time in 1994, ahead of consistent runs at the top in the late 90s and early 2000s. His ascension comes close on the heels of his winning the ICC Cricketer of the Year award.Tendulkar has enjoyed a watershed 2010, topping the run charts with 1270 runs, inclusive of four centuries and two double-hundreds. With India set to play three Tests against New Zealand at home and three Tests in South Africa in the immediate future, Tendulkar has the opportunity to better his career-best rating of 898 and become the 26th batsman to cross the 900-point mark.Rahul Dravid held on to the 22nd position after a patchy series where he managed only one half-century in four innings. VVS Laxman retained the eighth spot despite missing the Bangalore Test, while M Vijay’s maiden century helped him jump 29 places to 57th.Ricky Ponting’s inability to convert starts into centuries may have hampered his side, but his three 70s in four innings helped him climb three spots to the 16th position. Michael Clarke struggled for runs through the series, resulting in him dropping out of the top ten, while Simon Katich also slipped two spots to 14th. Shane Watson, who scored 271 runs in the two Tests, moved up to 24th, while Marcus North’s fifth Test hundred lifted him to 46th.In the bowler ratings, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Ben Hilfenhaus have all gained one place each. Zaheer, who picked 12 wickets in the series and impressed with his reverse swing, surged to 744 rating points, tied fourth with England’s James Anderson. Johnson moved up to the seventh spot, one clear of Harbhajan who in turn pushed Doug Bollinger to ninth. Dale Steyn, Graeme Swann and Mohammad Asif continue to hold the top three spots in the bowling table.

Modi still to respond to passport cancellation threat

India’s foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, has threatened to cancel the former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s passport if he does not respond to corruption charges by next Thursday

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Oct-2010India’s foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, has threatened to cancel the former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s passport if he does not respond to corruption charges by next Thursday. The regional passport officer in Mumbai issued a showcause notice to Modi on October 13, asking him to explain why his passport should not be revoked. “Lalit Modi has been given 15 days to respond to the notice,” Rao said. “Reply is still awaited from Lalit Modi on the notice given to him. Mumbai regional passport office confirmed he hasn’t replied to the notice.”The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which looks into foreign exchange violations, had written to the external affairs ministry on October 5 asking it to revoke Modi’s passport since he had persistently refused to face the ED regarding allegations of financial irregularities. Modi has been living abroad for the last few months reportedly fearing danger to his life. The ED is examining whether Modi violated the Foreign Exchange Management Act during his time as IPL chairman. Earlier this month, the directorate issued a blue corner alert for Modi, which makes it mandatory for law-enforcement agencies around the world to detain him wherever they spot him and inform the ED accordingly.

Newcastle team news on Trippier v Wolves

Craig Hope has now dropped another injury blow for Newcastle United before they play Wolves at home in the Premier League on Friday night.

The Lowdown: Willock an injury doubt

As per The Daily Mail journalist via Twitter, Joe Willock is now a ‘doubt’ for the Magpies’ game against Bruno Lage’s team with an injury to his knee.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-4/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Hope claimed that it could open the door for Bruno Guimaraes to start his first game at St James’ Park.

The Latest: Trippier injury update

According to Hope via Twitter, Kieran Trippier will also miss Friday’s match as well as Newcastle’s next league fixture at home to Leicester City, but there is hope that the defender could still return later this month.

The journalist outlined: “Also understand Kieran Trippier will miss Wolves & Leicester but there remains hope he’ll be back this month.”

The Verdict: Big blow for Newcastle

After Trippier was seen stepping up his recovery in Dubai, it was hoped that he could return earlier in April. However, the fact that he will now miss their next two games is a big blow for Newcastle.

The right-back has statistically been the Magpies’ best performer in the Premier League so far this season, averaging more tackles, interceptions and crosses per game than any of his team-mates (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, the Tynesiders will not feel safe from relegation just yet, so Eddie Howe will now have to find a way to try and get as many points as possible from their next two matches without Trippier in the team.

Cricinfo staff07-Jun-2010Uganda coach Mohammed Ebrahim Barney has re-called former Under-19 captain Hamza Almuzahim and batsman Nand Kishore Patel in the hope of boosting the national side’s fragile batting line-up as Uganda begin preparations for their ICC Intercontinental Shield four-day game against Namibia, which starts on September 18.Almuzahim has returned to Uganda from England and has recovered from the injury problems that curtailed his semi-professional stint at Bourton Vale CC in North London.Uganda are currently at the top of the points table in the competition with 29, but Namibia are only three points behind them and recently crushed Bermuda by an innings and 185 runs at Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek.”It’s nice to have Hamza back in the squad,” said Barney. “He is rated highly. I saw him bat and he is the sort of guy who can drive the ball well down the ground. Nandi also has a proven record and his inclusion will be key. But these two have to prove themselves.”The provisional squad of 20 is currently training at Lugogo. Uganda will also play Namibia in a series of Twenty20 and limited-overs games after their Intercontinental Shield encounter.

وأردف: “في أي منظومة رياضية عندما يخسر فريق 3 مباريات متتالية يكون التغيير واجبًا وهذا أمر منطقي”.
