Barba, cabelo e Bigode!

Tsotsobe released early by Essex

Lonwabo Tsotosbe, the South Africa left-arm pace bowler, has been released by Essex a week before the end of his contract

Lonwabo Tsotosbe, the South Africa left-arm pace bowler, has been released by Essex a week before the end of his contract. Tsotsobe’s poor form during his stint with the Division Two county side and an outburst on social networking site, Twitter, are the two major reasons for his early departure.”They [Essex] were not happy with his form,” Arthur Turner, Tsotsobe’s agent told ESPNcricinfo. “They expected more from him.” Tsotsobe signed a short-term deal with Essex and joined them last month. In three first-class matches, he took five wickets at an average of 77.60, which prompted Essex to drop him from the first XI last week . He also played in five limited-overs matches and his eight wickets came at average of 30.25 while he had a bloated economy rate of 6.28.Tsotosbe expressed his feelings about being dropped on Twitter on Monday when he posted. “Ive never felt like ths eva. Ths is the worst two mnths of my life. And u know wen u start regretin urself it aint gud.”Friends from back home replied to him with messages of encouragement, with many telling him to hang in and see the contract out. He replied to one by saying, “i think i shudhave stayed at home and work on my strength,” and another with, “talent is over rated, its the hard work u put wt talent that gets u places. And its just impossible to work in ths environment.”His reaction stunned Essex management, who told the BBC that their hospitality to visiting players had not come under such attack in the past. “Everyone who comes into our dressing room, one of the first things they say to me is what a great place it is to play cricket, because they like the great environment,” Paul Grayson, the Essex coach said. “So to hear that he said some things about the dressing room is very annoying.”Grayson also said there was no reason for him to stay around for their next fixture against Gloucestershire, which starts on Sunday. “He is not going to play next week at Bristol so he might as well go back to South Africa,” Grayson said. “It’s really disappointing. He has got to look at himself. We gave him a great chance to come and play some county cricket and he has not made the most of it.”Grayson added that Essex would put their feelings in a letter to Cricket South Africa. He did not go into detail about the content of the communication that Essex want to have with officials in South Africa, but it will likely deal with the public comments about the club, which Grayson reacted called “downright rude.”Tony Irish, chief executive of the South African Cricketers’ Association said that “there is a social networking policy in place and the guys are well aware that there are dangers.” Irish could not comment further on Tsotsobe’s case in particular but said that if any player is found to have contravened the code, “they will be disciplined.” Gerald Majola, the chief executive of CSA, also did not have the exact details: “If Essex want to put it all in writing I will take it up with them or with Lonwabo himself,” he said. This was Tsotsbe’s first stint at a county, having previously only played club cricket in England. He was Essex’s third choice overseas recruit after attempts to sign Peter Siddle and Tim Southee failed. Turner said that he “struggled with his lengths,” as is the case with many bowlers when they first travel to the UK. Tsotsobe has also been in regular contact with South Africa assistant coach Vincent Barnes who said that Tsotsobe felt he was “getting better,” although he had battled to adjust to the conditions, including the weather.

Rangers could two keep two stars if they win Europa League

Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos may be inclined to stay at Rangers if they win the Europa League, Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

Rangers take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEL showpiece in Seville on Wednesday night.

The Gers missed the chance to qualify for the Champions League by winning the Scottish Premiership – that will go to arch-rivals Celtic – but there is a also group-stage spot up for grabs for Wednesday’s victor.

Kent and Morelos are both approaching the final year of their contracts at Ibrox.

Morelos publicly admitted earlier in the season that he hoped that he would ‘soon’ be allowed to leave, while transfer insider Dean Jones claims that Kent has his eyes on a Premier League move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

O’Rourke says Rangers may be able to match the ambition of Kent and Morelos if they qualify for Europe’s premier club competition.

The two players could then be tempted to commit to the club ‘for the foreseeable future’.

He told GMS: “If you’re playing Champions League football, it’s going to help your chances of keeping hold of your best players, the likes of Morelos and Kent, who obviously would like to be playing at the highest level.

“So, if Rangers can go on and win it and they get in the Champions League, it’s only going to help their chances of keeping their best players at the club for the foreseeable future.”

The verdict

There’s no doubting that this pair are two of Rangers’ star players. According to Transfermarkt, they’re the two most valuable assets owned by the club at a combined £24.3million.

Morelos also tops the club’s earning charts on £33,000 per week, while Kent is in the upper echelons too on £18,000 (via Salary Sport). Taken together, the duo collect more than £2.65million per year.

And you’d have to say that reward is deserved given that Morelos is the club’s joint-top scorer with 16 goals, while Kent is second for assists (via BBC Sport). Between them, they have racked up 37 goal involvements this term.

They may have the chance to move to a stronger league than the SPFL, but will there realistically be another suitor who can offer them starting opportunities in the Champions League? That’s the key point.

Zimbabwe demolished by de Kock ton

Scorecard
South Africa Under-19 completed a clean sweep of Zimbabwe across both limited-overs formats with a crushing eight-wicket win in the second Twenty20 at Northerns-Goodwood Cricket Club Oval in Cape Town. Quinton de Kock’s imperious hundred helped his team to easily overhaul Zimbabwe’s 151 for 8, the landmark coming from just 51 balls as victory was achieved with 25 balls to spare.Zimbabwe gave themselves a chance of scoring a consolation win to close their tour when Matthew Bentley bowled Regardt Verster to reduce South Africa to 68 for 2 in the eighth over. That was as good as it got for them, however, and the match slipped rapidly away in the course of de Kock’s whirlwind innings. He had looked a threatening prospect in the first match at Paarl, making 49 in 29 balls to go with 118 runs in three innings during the one-day series, and took full toll today hitting 13 fours and three sixes. Only Roy Kaia and Liberty Nherera escaped the full wrath of de Kock’s bat, with Tochukwu Enwerem, Vuyisile Mapala and Peacemore Zimwa conceding 58 runs in a combined four overs and five balls.Grant Edmeades was a mere spectator in an 87-run partnership for the third wicket, the runs flow at better than 10-an-over as de Kock stormed towards his hundred and the series whitewash for South Africa.Zimbabwe had once again relied upon a couple of good individual performances to shore up their batting after South Africa’s bowlers scythed through their line-up. Kevin Kasuza was in the runs once again, making a confident 39 to go with his half-century yesterday before he was stumped by de Kock off Malcolm Nofal. Kaia’s unbeaten 60 held the rest of the innings together, with every South African bowler finding some reward to set up a triumphant end to a one-sided tour.

Haider's family reports threats to police

The family of Zulqarnain Haider, the Pakistan wicketkeeper, has reported receiving threatening phone calls to the police after Haider, who is still in England, said he would expose those involved in corrupt practices in Pakistan cricket.”Zulqarnain’s wife got three calls today, two from an unknown number and one from a number in Greece, in which the caller, speaking in Urdu, threatened her of dire consequences if Zulqarnain said anything about anyone,” Aqeel Haider, one of Haider’s brother, told .Aqeel said the calls were received after Haider had updated his Facebook page with a message saying he would blow the whistle on ” those who have taken money”. “All these people who are saying negative things about me, they should wait for five more days, then I will show them my background and status,” Haider wrote. “After five days I will show them their background and place, and also those who don’t take money and those who have taken money.”Haider had gone missing from the team hotel on the morning of Pakistan’s fifth ODI against South Africa in Dubai and resurfaced in London later the same day. He was said to be seeking protection in the UK after he was threatened by unidentified people following his team’s one-wicket win in the fourth ODI against South Africa. As a result of the threats Haider announced his retirement from cricket.

Celtic claim emerges on Carter-Vickers

Celtic had a rather significant overhaul last summer in terms of the number of players that joined and moved out of the club.

As things stand, it seems as though this hefty amount of business has paid off, with the Hoops currently six points clear at the top of the SPFL table.

Looking ahead to the next transfer window, it seems as though a clue has been dropped over the future of one particular player currently in Ange Postecoglou’s squad that joined last summer.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones had this to say about Cameron Carter-Vickers and what the upcoming summer transfer window could hold for him.

He said: “In terms of Carter-Vickers, the player has not made a decision yet. It sounds to me like he would rather be in the Premier League if possible, but he needs to see what opportunities genuinely open up.”

Since arriving at the Parkhead club back in the previous summer transfer window on a loan deal from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, the defender has become an integral part of Celtic’s team.

With 28 league appearances under his belt, the 24-year-old has earned himself an overall performance rating of 7.36/10 from WhoScored, making him the fourth-highest rated player currently in Postecoglou’s squad and the highest-rated centre-back.

Postecoglou will be livid

To highlight how highly-rated he is by the Hoops boss, only Carl Starfelt and Joe Hart have played more minutes in the league than the on-loan Spurs figure.

In terms of his defensive talents, the American has racked up a total of 19 successful tackles, 36 interceptions and a higher average of clearances per game (4.2) than any other Celtic player.

This shows just how pivotal Carter-Vickers has been for the Bhoys at the back and how much he has contributed to the fact that they have the best defensive record in the league with just 19 goals conceded in 33 games.

Taking into account what Jones had to say about the defender’s apparent preference to play in the Premier League, this would surely be a big blow for Celtic and make Postecoglou rather angry given how important the player has been for the team.

Moving forward, once the summer transfer window opens, the Hoops should do everything they can to convince Carter-Vickers to stay where he is and negotiate a deal with Spurs to make it happen.

But for now, Jones’ update is a big blow to Celtic’s hopes of convincing him to stay at the club on a more permanent basis.

Liverpool eye up audacious Mbappe move

Liverpool have been linked with an audacious move for France and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe this summer.

The Lowdown: Mbappe on the move?

The 23-year-old is undoubtedly one of the world’s best players at the moment, continuing to wreak havoc for PSG and registering 36 goal contributions (22 goals and 14 assists) in 29 Ligue 1 starts this season.

Mbappe’s future continues to be one of football’s biggest talking points, with a summer move to Real Madrid widely mooted while his contract ticks down towards its expiry in the summer.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the Frenchman in the past and now a surprise rumour has emerged.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-29/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Liverpool back in the hunt

According to Get French Football News on Twitter, the Reds now look like possible front-runners to sign Mbappe this summer:

“His new suitor is likely to be Liverpool.”

PSG and France midfielder Jérôme Rothen has apparently been given new information that a different club has entered the race and may have a ‘new factor’, with Liverpool named as the mystery club due to the player’s personal appreciation for Jurgen Klopp.

The Verdict: Only if Salah leaves?

While the idea of seeing Mbappe in a Liverpool shirt is beyond mouthwatering, it is almost impossible to see a move happening this summer – unless one thing happens.

The wages that he would demand would surely be deemed too astronomical by FSG, while the the current options at Klopp’s disposal are already great.

The only way a move could seem possible is if Mohamed Salah leaves the club, perhaps to PSG, with Mbappe heading the other way. FSG would surely be more willing to pay the big wages Salah wants to a much younger player called ‘the best player in European football’ and ‘unstoppable’ by Carlo Ancelotti.

West Brom: Steve Bruce confirms latest injury news

West Brom head into tonight’s clash against Blackburn Rovers knowing they desperately need a victory.

After losing their last three games in the Championship, the Baggies are desperate for all three points to keep them in contention to have any chance of promotion back to the Premier League this season – however, Steve Bruce has been handed a blow ahead of the game.

What’s the word?

The Albion manager has confirmed a double blow to the strength of the side available to play in the clash this evening, with both Kyle Bartley and Matt Phillips unavailable for selection.

On Bartley, Bruce confimed;

“He has chicken pox. At least we know what it is, he’s got to isolate for seven days. We expect him available maybe for Luton.

West Brom correspondent for The Athletic, Steve Madeley, further confirmed that Matt Phillips will be unavailable due to a foot injury;

“Matt Phillips (foot) also likely to still be missing and Livermore suspended. #WBA”

Fans will be gutted

West Brom have been in freefall winning only one of their last seven league games, with the side going from challenging for the Championship title to 9th in the league table in a matter of a few months.

Fans will be gutted to see Kyle Bartley missing from the side in such an important must win game for the Baggies, with the centre back playing a big part in the side, appearing in 27 of the last 30 league games, scoring two goals from his defensive position so far.

Matt Phillips will also be a big miss, as it has not been revealed how long he will be unavailable for following a foot injury, with the winger also offering an important role in the side after playing 23 league games, scoring three goals and bagging two assists so far this season.

Bruce must capitalise on Blackburn Rovers’ own poor form, with the Ewood Park side having lost their last two games in the Championship.

A win could see the side leapfrog Nottingham Forest after they drew their game over the weekend, potentially putting the Baggies into 7th.

The news of Bartley and Philipps’ absence however does leave a big dent to their chances of victory.

A Phoney War with focus

Big Picture

Cameron White scored a century on his last visit to the Rose Bowl•Getty Images

If there is a future for 50-over cricket, then surely it lies in contests such as this: a five-match hors d’oeuvre that is decidedly and unashamedly geared towards more significant encounters in the not-so-distant future. Everything that England and Australia have done in their recent outings – whether it’s thumping Pakistan or labouring past Bangladesh – has been assessed in the context of their Ashes preparations. So here we go then. Here’s a proper Phoney War to be getting on with. May the best team steal the momentum and land the psychological blows.Whatever happens in the coming five games, it is hard to envisage a scoreline as one-sided as last September’s 6-1 drubbing. England have come on in leaps and bounds since that ignominious thrashing – their gameplans have been liberated by key personnel such as Eoin Morgan and Craig Kieswetter – while Australia, regardless of their status as World Cup and Champions Trophy-holders, are in an undeniable period of transition, and beset by a raft of injuries to many of their first-choice seam attack, most notably Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus and the fading Brett Lee.But the real reason why this series could and should be a humdinger lies in its timing. Ever since the days of the Texaco Trophy, English teams have invariably performed better when the one-dayers have preceded the Tests. In 2005, England produced some of their best 50-over form of the decade to share the NatWest Series courtesy of a tied final against Australia (before slumping 2-1 in the subsequent NatWest Challenge, but that’s another story), while their achievement in beating South Africa in South Africa back in November gave them vital self-belief ahead of the tough Test series that followed.Whether the public interest will match the expected commitment from the teams is a moot point – although given how woeful both England and Australia have been in the football World Cup to date, many sports fans might quite enjoy the chance to recapture some bragging rights.

Watch out for…

Ricky Ponting is back in England and bristling for vengeance once again. His last two visits have not been among the most enjoyable memories of his illustrious career, seeing as he surrendered the Ashes in both 2005 and 2009, but the indignities will only have strengthened his resolve. He’s now the elder statesman of a new-look team, and his talents may not be as razor-edged as they once were, but his presence on a cricket field remains inspirational nonetheless.Paul Collingwood was a part of the England side that thrashed Australia by 100 runs on this very ground in 2005, in the first Twenty20 international between the two teams. While the prospect of once again reducing the Aussies to 31 for 7 may be improbable, Collingwood knows full well how critical it is to attack from the outset, just as they did five years ago. After his break during the Bangladesh series, he’s fit and refreshed, and ready to resume hostilities.

Team news

Cameron White scored a century on this ground when the teams met last September, and he is now the fulcrum of the batting line-up at No. 5. Tim Paine resumes his wicketkeeping duties following the injury to Brad Haddin, while Doug Bollinger leads an inexperienced seam attack, in the absence of Johnson and Hilfenhaus.Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Nathan Hauritz, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Doug Bollinger.England eased to victory over Scotland at the weekend, and it’s hard to envisage many changes to the side for that game. Andrew Strauss and Craig Kieswetter gelled as an opening partnership at the first time of asking, while Stuart Broad will be better for his first outing since the World Twenty20 final.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Luke Wright, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Ajmal Shahzad, 11 James Anderson.

Pitch and conditions

The Rose Bowl had a reputation as a seamer’s paradise in its early years, but the pitch has settled down considerably since then. With fine weather in prospect, the challenge of batting under lights will be less daunting than it might otherwise have been, although White and Co. weren’t exactly unsettled by the autumnal chill they experienced on their last visit.

Stats and Trivia

  • The Rose Bowl match will be the 3000th ODI, and it will feature the same two teams who contested the first, at Melbourne in January 1971.
  • Despite defeating Australia in the Ashes and the final of the World Twenty20, England’s recent record in ODIs against them is woeful. They’ve lost eight of their last nine fixtures, dating back to the World Cup in March 2007, and most recently were crushed by nine wickets in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy last October.
  • Australia have a 100% record in ODIs at the Rose Bowl, albeit they’ve played just two matches, against England in 2009 and the USA in 2004. England have won two, lost two in four visits.

Quotes

“We all remember that Twenty20 game at Hampshire where we kept nipping them out. You’ve got to go hard at them. We’ve learnt that over the last five or six years.”
“Whenever there is a big series coming up the build-up starts a fair way out – and for the Ashes it’s already started. Pretty much from now until the Ashes are over and done with in the middle of January, everything we do will have some sort of focus on the Ashes series. There will be no excuses for us come late November.”
Ricky Ponting is quite focused, it would appear.
