Liverpool fans get emotional by thinking of the day Jurgen Klopp leaves

Liverpool fans are feeling emotional about the day Jurgen Klopp leaves the club after reading of how the German’s departure impacted one individual at Borussia Dortmund.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Dortmund, revealed in his book that he cried “real tears” when he said goodbye to Klopp, knowing that he would never have another coach, or relationship, as good as what he had with the Liverpool boss.

The 52-year-old has had a similar effect on those he has encountered on Merseyside, and even before lifting the Champions League in June he was carving out a legacy at the club.

He has brought tremendous success to the club and taken them to great heights in the Premier League, but it seems supporters are enamoured as much by his relationships with his players as his record for winning games.

His famous bear hugs are what one fan will miss, and many don’t want to think about the day he leaves Anfield, as it already conjures up feelings of sadness.

Here is some of the reaction from some emotional Reds.

Manchester City: Transfer target Thiago Almada signs new deal at Velez Sarsfield

Thiago Almada, the young attacking midfielder who had been a transfer target for Manchester City this summer, has committed his future to current club Velez Sarsfield.

Velez Sarsfield confirmed on their Twitter channel @Velez [via Golazo Argentino] that the 18-year-old has signed a new four-year deal with the club which will take him up to 2023.

According to Golazo Argentino, the deal includes an increased release clause of €19m (£16.95m) if triggered before next February, €22m (£19.63m) up to next August and a final €25m (£22.3m) for the remainder of the player’s contract.

Portuguese media outlet Record reported [via Sport Witness] this summer that Manchester City were in negotiations with Velez Sarsfield over the teenager, with O Jogo claiming that the Premier League champions had a bid of €10m (£8.92m) rejected by the Argentine Superliga club.

Almada scored three goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances in his debut season for Velez Sarsfield, an average of 0.19 goals and 0.12 assists per game. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]

He has featured in four of their first five matches so far this term but started just once and has yet to contribute to any goals in 2019/20. He has averaged 29.3 passes and 0.5 key passes per game this season, with an accuracy rate of 79.5%.

He has played as a left winger for Velez Sarsfield this season, the same role in which Raheem Sterling has excelled for Manchester City recently.

The 24-year-old England international scored five goals in his first four Premier League matches this season and has averaged 30.8 passes per game, although his passing success rate of 78% is slightly lower than Almada’s.

Sterling has been a hugely prolific player for Pep Guardiola’s team over the last couple of years, with 25 goals in 51 games last season (0.49 goals per game) and 23 goals in 46 appearances (0.5 goals per game) in 2017/18.

He had not always been such a fruitful resource of goals, though, with just 21 in 94 Manchester City appearances in his first two seasons at the club (0.22 goals per game).

When Sterling was Almada’s current age of 18 years and five months, he had just finished the 2012/13 season with a paltry return of two goals from 36 appearances for Liverpool (0.05 goals per game), which makes Almada’s return from his first Velez Sarsfield campaign seem quite respectable by comparison.

Almada has not been a regular in the Velez Sarsfield team of late and has only made 20 senior club appearances, which makes his potential release clause of £22.3m seem steep, while he would find it virtually impossible to displace Sterling at Manchester City given the England forward’s superb form.

However, Sterling has shown how beautifully polished gems can be made from rough teenage diamonds, while fellow Manchester City left winger Leroy Sane continues to be the subject of transfer interest from Bayern Munich, as reported by The Sun, which could leave Guardiola seeking an alternative to Sterling in that position if Sane goes.

Even with Almada signing a new deal at Velez Sarsfield, the Premier League champions ought to monitor his progress over the season and evaluate whether he could blossom into a winger of the same goalscoring substance as Sterling, in which case he would certainly be worth another transfer bid in the next few months.

Manchester City fans, do you think Almada would be worth pursuing in the future? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below!

Tottenham’s Harry Kane seems to criticise himself on Instagram

Harry Kane seemingly wasn’t in a jovial mood despite scoring against Kosovo.

He said that there is a lot to work on, and we can only assume that one of these things is his penalty technique – his spot-kicks are usually near-flawless.

Kane had a chance to net his 27th England goal from the penalty spot on Tuesday evening, but his effort from 12 yards was saved by Arijanet Muric.

We’ve seen before how much personal accolades mean to Kane. Who can forget the saga surrounding him claiming Christian Eriksen’s goal a couple of seasons ago?

With so much being made of the striker chasing down Wayne Rooney’s England scoring record, you can understand why the attacker has maybe been a bit hard on himself after the penalty miss at St Mary’s.

Nottingham Forest should ditch Ben Watson in favour of John Bostock

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Nottingham Forest are finally back in action this afternoon after some time off for the international break.

Sabri Lamouchi’s men will have been hard at training considering it is the first time he’s had any significant involvement with his squad as he was appointed so late before pre-season got underway.

It means he’s had time to fully instil his gameplan and tactics without the distractions of playing two matches a week.

The Reds’ fixtures appear much more comfortable this month, but it does begin with the tough trip to league leaders Swansea City.

It may be the perfect opportunity to implement a change that needs to happen to benefit Forest not only in the short-term but hopefully in the long term too.

On the Chalkboard

Currently, Lamouchi deploys Ben Watson in defensive midfield, but fans haven’t been overly keen on him this season, and at 34, he can’t be far off retiring considering this is the twilight of his career.

The 5 foot 10 midfielder hasn’t done a great deal wrong if you’re fair, but his legs are starting to go a little bit – not that it is a problem for the role he’s required to play.

He’s averaging just 0.7 key passes per game, as well as 0.2 dribbles per outing which maybe proves the previous statement.

They signed John Bostock on loan this summer, and he’s an ideal candidate to replace the former Wigan midfielder.

He was once courted by La Liga giants Barcelona when he was a teenager and at one stage earned a move to Tottenham, so there had to have been some talent there.

He’s since lost his way, playing in Belgium, Turkey and France but maybe the French boss can be the one to get the best out of him.

There were definitely glimpses of that against Derby in their Carabao Cup demolishing where he was arguably one of the best players on the pitch. He completed 96% of his passes and also won three aerial duels according to SofaScore.

To do it against opposition of the same tier as Forest surely only strengthens his argument on why he should be given a start.

Ligue 1 Transfer Roundup: Lille eye Yazici and Simunovic, Liverpool consider Kamano approach

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Ligue 1 transfer roundup consisted of interest in Montpellier’s Ruben Aguilar as well as Monaco’s pursuit of Mattia Perin and Andre Silva. Today’s edition is comprised of Yusuf Yazici being chased by Lille as well as the latter’s desire to capture Celtic’s Jozo Simunovic. Also, Liverpool have their eyes on Francois Kamano.

Lille in talks for Yazici

Report: Trabzonspor’s president Ahmet Agaoglu has been talking of Lille’s hunt for Yusuf Yazici. He said that negotiations are in progress, with the French club having offered €15m (£13.8m) for the Turkey international’s services. However, this is a long way off what Trabzonspor want, Agaoglu added.

Verdict: Yazici is a man in demand this summer, with Manchester United also said to be keen. The 22-year-old did not have his best campaign in the Super Lig last time out, but interested parties will be more impressed by the attacking midfielder’s 2017/18 season during which he scored 10 goals and provided five assists. Lille have a lot of money to spend towards the end of this transfer window following the recent sales of Nicolas Pepe and Rafael Leao and so they should be able to get closer to Trabzonspor’s demands. With just Jonathan Ikone in attacking midfield, more depth is needed if Christophe Galtier’s team are to be competitive both in the league and in Europe next season.

How likely is the deal? 7.5/10

Lille eye Simunovic

Report: According to The Daily Record, Lille are also said to stepping up their attempts to sign Celtic’s Jozo Simunovic. Les Dogues have entered into talks with the Scottish Premier League outfit but as of yet, they have been unable to complete a deal.

Verdict: With the windfall from those two sales, Lille are beginning to flex their muscles as they look to bring reinforcements in. Simunovic was not a guaranteed starter for Celtic last season, playing just 30 games in all competitions, but a lot of that was down to injuries which blighted his campaign. Still, the 24-year-old contributed enough to help the Bhoys win the famed treble-treble. Neil Lennon and co do not necessarily want to sell him so a good offer would need to be lodged. Lille do already have five centre-backs, but Jose Fonte is now 35, whilst Edgar Le (TRT Spor via Sport Witness) and Antoine Soumaoro have both been linked with moves away from the club, which may mean another defender is required.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Liverpool consider late Kamano bid

Report: As per The Sun, Liverpool are weighing up a late bid for Bordeaux’s Francois Kamano. Jurgen Klopp and co are said to be considering a £20m deal for the 23-year-old as they look to bring in cover for their attack.

Verdict: Whilst Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are undisputedly Klopp’s first-choice trio in attack, it is always good to have other options. Last season, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri played the role of back-up options to positive effect, but a third replacement would mean that the German manager has two players in each offensive position should disaster strike. And the Guinea international would not be a bad choice, either. He netted 10 goals in Ligue 1 for his side last term, as well as three in the Europa League. Les Girondins are short at left-wing though so would need to bring in a replacement should Kamano move to Merseyside.

How likely is the deal? 6/10

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama waiting for one thing before completing Club Brugge move

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Victor Wanyama is waiting to discover if Club Brugge qualify for the Champions League group stages before completing a move to the club from Tottenham Hotspur, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The two clubs are in talks over the Kenya international, with the Standard reporting that Spurs are keen to receive as much as £17m for him, while Brugge are prepared to pay around £8m.

The Belgian club won the first leg of their Champions League play-off against LASK Linz this week and hold a 1-0 lead ahead of the second leg, which comes next Wednesday.

The Standard reports that the former Southampton midfielder is waiting to discover if the club will be playing in the group stages of Europe’s premier club competition in 2019/20.

Wanyama has yet to play for Spurs this season and endured an injury-hit campaign in 2018/19, making just four starts in the Premier League.

Clever strategy

Wanyama deserves to be playing in the Champions League.

He played in the Camp Nou against Barcelona last season, while also featuring in both legs of the quarter-final against Manchester City and the semi-finals versus Ajax.

The 28-year-old is still young enough to make a significant impact in the competition and he would surely boost Brugge’s chances of making it into the knockout stages.

However, if LASK Linz turn the tie around, Wanyama would be better off exploring alternative options.

He’s right to wait.

Crystal Palace: Jean Michael Seri battle likely to end in defeat

Without a doubt, Jean Michael Seri did not have the strongest of seasons following his £27m move from Nice to Fulham last summer.

After a particularly bright 2016/17 Ligue 1 campaign and previous interest from Barcelona, much was expected of the 27-year-old. However, in the end, he proved to be a huge disappointment, though that has not stopped his name from being linked with a host of clubs this transfer window.

And that includes Crystal Palace, with Football.London one outlet to report that the Premier League outfit are interested in signing the Ivorian midfielder.

Roy Hodgson, though, faces fighting a losing battle, with Napoli and both Milan clubs also said to be keen (Calcionapoli24.com via Football Italia).

Not only can the likes of Napoli and Inter Milan offer Seri the chance to play in the Champions League, but they also look like much better fits for the former Nice man than Crystal Palace.

One of Seri’s biggest strengths is his passing, something Football.London highlighted earlier in the season when things were going right for both him and Fulham. At either Napoli or Inter, the Ivory Coast international would surely be in a better environment to utilise that compared to Crystal Palace.

Inter and Napoli were the two highest ranked teams for possession in Serie A, averaging 56.9% and 56.8% over the course of the campaign. The Eagles, in contrast, ranked 15th in the Premier League with a significantly less 46.6% (as per WhoScored). They, of course, have lesser players than the two Italian giants.

Still, based on that and the lure of Champions League football, it is hard to imagine Seri opting for an England stay over a move to Italy if reports are true.

Transfer Focus: Clarke not going to Spurs could have knock-on effects for Leeds

[ad_pod ]

A recent report in the Yorkshire Evening Post has stated that Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to be willing to pay the £20m price tag that Leeds United have set on Jack Clarke.

This means that the winger will either stay at Elland Road or leave for a lesser fee, and this latest development could have a huge knock-on effect in terms of the Whites’ transfer business this summer.

What’s the story?

Newspapers and online sources have been rampant with speculation that the 18-year-old could be on his way to north London, but Leeds have been resilient when it comes to any potential deal for their prized asset and have stood firm on their £20m valuation.

Noel Whelan has recently claimed the Whites were overpricing their hot prospect and it seems that Daniel Levy has agreed with that sentiment as Spurs don’t want to pay such a hefty fee for an unproven quantity.

Knock-on effects

Failure to sell Clarke for £20m may have severe knock-on effects for the rest of Leeds’ transfer window.

Phil Hay has previously stated that he thinks Leeds’ transfer model will force them to sell players before thinking about new arrivals. This means that the Whites may have to swallow their pride and sell the youngster at a lower price or let another one of their players go.

There has been no shortage of interest in Kalvin Phillips with Aston Villa reportedly preparing a £14m bid, and if Leeds aren’t going to sell Clarke, then they may allow the 23-year-old to leave Elland Road so that they can make signings this summer.

If the Yorkshire club sell Clarke at a lower price, it will also affect the calibre of players that they can target, so this newest update from Spurs isn’t something Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta will be happy to hear.

Bad news for Van Aanholt! Crystal Palace target Luton’s James Justin

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace are one of three top flight clubs set to join Aston Villa in the hunt for Luton Town’s James Justin, who has enjoyed a brilliant season with the League One winners.

The right-footer is predominantly left sided, with Jack Stacey occupying the right-back spot, and his arrival at Selhurst Park could therefore represent a threat to Patrick van Aanholt, whose 2018/19 wasn’t so impressive.

What’s the news?

Well, Football Insider reports that the versatile Justin is also a target for Leicester, Southampton, Fulham and Villa, who have already tabled a £7.5m bid this summer.

The local lad made an impressive 52 appearances for the newly-promoted Hatters in all competitions, scoring three goals and chalking up nine assists, incredible creative numbers for a full-back.

He now looks likely to leave Kenilworth Road in the coming months with his contract expiring next summer.

Palace have started to put some emphasis on developing young talent in recent seasons, with the meteoric rise of Aaron Wan-Bissaka the chief example, and Justin could become the next young star to flourish at Selhurst Park, albeit at the expense of van Aanholt.

A problem for PVA

The former Sunderland man’s pace and surprising finishing ability make him a threat on the front foot but his defensive ineptitude has cost his side at times this season, with the Dutch international far too often losing track of his man or being caught out of position.

It’s something that many of the SE25 faithful have picked up on and it’s safe to say that they would welcome an upgrade…

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

Despite having wrestled the starting left-back spot from fellow January 2017 arrival Jeffrey Schlupp over the course of the past couple of years, the player’s poor form has sometimes led Roy Hodgson to start right-back Joel Ward in his place this season for more defensive stability.

Clearly the 5 ft 10 ace’s place in the back four isn’t guaranteed and the arrival of a young, hungry rival could see him relegated to the bench permanently if Justin can find his feet in the top flight.
