Arsenal player ratings vs Leeds: Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard on fire in another crushing Gunners win

Mikel Arteta's side made it seven successive wins in the Premier League to restore their eight-point lead at the top of the table

Arsenal answered Manchester City's win against Liverpool earlier on Saturday with a comfortable 4-1 success against Leeds United to restore their eight-point advantage at the top of the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta's side were far from their best, but two goals from Gabriel Jesus – his first since October – were enough to see them to a seventh successive league success.

Ben White was also on target for Arsenal, as was Granit Xhaka, while a deflected Rasmus Kristensen shot 15 minutes from time at least gave the travelling Leeds fans something to cheer.

Ticket fiasco as fans locked out of near-empty Nagpur stadium

Fans without tickets were turned away from Scotland’s World T20 match against Zimbabwe at the VCA stadium in Nagpur today, as there are no ticketing facilities available at the ground

Poor ticket arrangements disappoint fans in Nagpur

Fans without tickets were turned away from Scotland’s World T20 match against Zimbabwe at the VCA stadium in Nagpur today, as there are no ticketing facilities available at the ground. The tickets for the match are priced at 100 rupees for the East and West stands and 200 rupees for behind the bowler’s arm (approx £1.10 and £2.20 respectively). However, many supporters were obliged to travel back to the old VCA stadium in central Nagpur to purchase their tickets, meaning that that those that chose to do so were forced to miss much of the contest. The current stadium, which was inaugurated in 2008 and has a capacity of 45,000, lies 20km outside the city centre, a journey time of approximately 40 minutes by auto-rickshaw. However, the main ticketing system remains still situated at the old venue. A VCA official said it was not possible to have ticketing at both grounds. The BCCI, who declined to comment, are in overall charge of the ticketing policy for the tournament, but the arrangements for each match are at the discretion of the individual state associations. Dharamsala, the other venue that has so far hosted matches, has chosen to sell tickets for the qualifying rounds at the gate. The VCA spokesman added that advertisements for the ticketing policy had been placed in local papers but was unable to explain why the information had not been passed on to the BCCI or ICC, so they could warn fans who were travelling in from other grounds. The atmosphere inside the stadium, which came in for heavy criticism on the opening day of the tournament, was marginally improved for today’s contest, thanks to an influx of some 250 children from nearby schools. However, approximately 100 fans remained locked out of the ground at the start of Zimbabwe’s innings. The venue is too remote to support any local pubs or cafes in which to watch the contest, or to access the ICC’s online ticket-booking service that could have resolved the issue.”We love cricket, which is why we are here even in this heat to watch Scotland take on Zimbabwe,” one group of college students from Nagpur told ESPNcricinfo. “But we can’t book online because of the network and the ticket sales are going on at the other ground. There’s so few people in, why can’t they just let us in. We are even willing to pay at the gate.”One group of Scotland fans, who encountered similar problems during Tuesday’s opening round of fixtures, including Scotland’s defeat against Afghanistan, had been mistakenly informed that they could buy their tickets at their hotel.Privately ICC officials are frustrated that common sense has not been used, especially with the already low turn out for these matches.

Keogh the surprise package after Ryder shines

Jesse Ryder hit 87 but Essex lost their last six wickets for 39 runs as Northamptonshire fought back to enjoy the better of the opening day

ScorecardJesse Ryder’s 87 had but Essex on top before they lost their way late in the day•Getty ImagesJesse Ryder hit 87 but Essex lost their last six wickets for 39 runs as Northamptonshire fought back to enjoy the better of the opening day of the County Championship Division Two match at Wantage Road. After Nick Browne’s 58 at the top of the order, Essex were well placed on 237 for 4 with Ryder in full flow, but his dismissal shortly after tea sparked a dramatic collapse, Rob Keogh taking a career-best 3 for 35 while Rory Kleinveldt also picked up three wickets.Stephen Peters and Rob Newton then safely negotiated the remaining 12 overs of the day as Northants closed on 43 without loss.James Foster won the toss and opted to bat on a sunny day in Northampton and Browne got the visitor’s off to a flying start, reaching 32 at a run-a-ball, but an opening stand of 48 was broken when Jaik Mickleburgh left a straight one from Steven Crook and was lbw for 8.Browne, who completed his second half century of the season, and Tom Westley appeared to be guiding Essex to lunch in relative comfort until Crook excellently ran out the later for 14, a full length dive at mid-off before throwing down the stumps with Westley stranded.Kleinveldt found Browne’s outside edge in the third over after lunch, and despite Ryder quickly finding his stride with his first six scoring shots all boundaries, Northants kept chipping away as Ravi Bopara was sharply caught by Alex Wakely low at second slip off Muhammed Azharullah. After his initial flurry of boundaries Ryder, together with Ryan ten Doeschate reigned in their natural aggressive tendencies to share a partnership of 90 in 29 overs, a stand that appeared to be putting Essex in a strong position, Ryder reaching 50 in 81 balls, as Essex went to tea 212 for 4.Having looked in little danger throughout his 87, which included 11 fours and a six, Crook found a leading edge, smartly taken by Peters at cover and Essex would go on to lose their final six wickets in 64 balls.Three overs later ten Doeschate was caught behind driving Keogh for 32 and Keogh, who had never previously taken more than a single wicket in a Championship innings with his part time offspin, got one to turn past Graham Napier’s attempted drive.James Foster passed 12,000 career first class runs but would be left stranded on 21 as Adeel Malik was bowled attempted to slog sweep Keogh, and Rory Kleinveldt returned to remove David Masters and Reece Topley inside four ballsNewton moved up to open the batting in place of Richard Levi, and together with Peters ensured Northants reached the close without loss, Newton hitting four fours in his 21, while Peters will resume on 15.

Birrell wary of 'angry' Ireland

Having been with Ireland for five years, current South Africa assistant coach Adrian Birrell knows they would fight even harder to make their claim on behalf of the Associates

Firdose Moonda02-Mar-2015Saving the rhino, buying fairtrade coffee, recycling. We are attracted to these socially conscious ideas because we know they will make for a better, stronger community in future. That is also why cricket fans are fighting for Associate inclusion in the World Cup, but long before the latest campaign became fashionable there were plenty who knew the value of openness and one of them will be reunited with his former charges in Canberra.Adrian Birrell, South Africa’s assistant coach was in charge of Ireland from 2002 to 2007, when he oversaw their headline grabbing run at the Caribbean tournament, and believes Ireland have earned the right to play more regularly.””It’s definitely not fair. How many one-off games do they have? Not many. Between World Cups, they don’t play Full Member countries often. They need to play more,” Birrell said. “But we play a lot. It’s a full schedule. Can we play more? It’s quite tricky.”That’s why Birrell believes Ireland always have a point to prove when they play a World Cup game, no matter where they are positioned in the group or how other results have gone. “If you look at their record, they’ve continued to knock down the door and they keep on getting shut out. So they are angry and I understand that. That’s a driving factor and something which makes them play even harder to prove the Full Member teams wrong.”So South Africa need to be careful and Birrell has already identified Ireland’s batting line-up as the major threat. “They bat deep and they know how to chase targets. Four out of the top 10 World Cup chases are Ireland chases, three of them over 300 and two of them against Full Member teams. We’re fully aware of what they can do. I’m probably more aware than most, so we’ll be prepared.”South Africa will approach Ireland as they have been done every other team at this World Cup – with circumspection initially and acceleration later on. “It’s a matter of us coming in and making sure we have a solid start,” Birrell said. “If we play a structured start like we did against West Indies, we should be okay.”Birrell had coached Ireland to wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh, and a tie with Zimbabwe in 2007. He has seen them beat England in 2011 and West Indies this time. Although he would not want South Africa to be counted among that category, he does take some pride in Ireland’s progress.”When I started, there were probably one or two professionals,” Birrell said. “The rest were club players not earning their living from cricket. But since around 2005, a lot of their players have been county players, playing professionally. What I am surprised about is how much progress there has been in the administration and coaching structures. They’ve made great strides in looking after their grassroots and club cricket and making sure that the future Irish players will continue to come through.”Although the ICC have reduced the timescale for players to return to an Associate country if they opt to play Test cricket to two years, Birrell believes more could be done.”It’s difficult for them – they continue losing their players to England. Look at Boyd Rankin, who played a couple of matches and now doesn’t play in a World Cup for either Ireland or England when he should be playing for Ireland. Because he’s played a couple of matches for England, it discounts him [unless he opts to re-qualify]. That’s hurtful. Maybe there are others to follow, others who are picked for England.”But he acknowledged that Ireland have forged their own identity which has so far allowed them to stay vibrant as cricketing entity. “They’ve got a strong culture, the play an attractive brand of cricket and they’ve got a number of good players. They punch above their weight.”

Trott case promotes drive for 'inner fitness'

Jonathan Trott’s struggles have promoted a rethink on the education of young cricketers•AFP

A high-profile group of sports professionals has appealed for more emphasis to be paid to the “inner fitness” of England’s aspiring young cricketers to ensure that they are mentally attuned to surviving the pressures of high-level sport and able to develop a well-rounded life. The Journeys Through Sport group, which was founded by Neil Burns, the freelance coach and former first-class cricketer, has issued an open letter appealing for more understanding to be paid to mental health issues in the development of athletes in the belief that it will create a “healthier” sporting landscape. The letter has several high-profile signatories, including former England footballer Gary Lineker, the Somerset and England batsman Nick Compton and the England rugby world cup winner Richard Hill.It comes in light of the Jonathan Trott episode and is timed to coincide with Trott’s first match since he left the Ashes tour after the first Test in Brisbane suffering from what was described, at the time, as a “stress related illness” and has subsequently been described by Trott as “burnout”.Trott is engaged in a two-day friendly against Gloucestershire at Edgbaston, although his first-class comeback takes place in a three-day match against Oxford University in the Parks beginning on Monday.Trott’s explanation was deemed unsatisfactory by some, with Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, dismissing the original explanation as “a bit of a con” and suggesting Trott simply “did a runner” at “the toughest of times”.Now Journeys Through Sport, which describes itself as “a charitable organisation which funds research and development programs to develop ‘Leaders in Life’ through sport” has appealed for a more compassionate view towards those competing in “intensely demanding and public environments where their work can define them as people”.”So many sport development programmes seek to develop ‘toughness’ and competitiveness, without attending to the need to develop the whole person,” the letter states.”If sport’s leaders can provide environments whereby athletes feel secure enough to be open and honest about vulnerability and insecurities without being judged or feeling fearful about being discarded, then the sporting landscape will be healthier.”We urge sporting directors, coaches, and leaders of development programmes, to attend to the development of ‘inner fitness’ alongside ‘athletic fitness’ to help people understand ‘self’ better.”The letter goes on to describe “inner fitness” as addressing “a young person’s purpose in life, their values, the way they think and understand their emotions, and how they acquire the relationship skills needed to achieve a well-rounded life, both inside and outside their sport.”Journeys Through Sport also comprises several mental health professionals, including Alastair Storie, a former cricketer and current chartered psychologist, David Gilborune, a professor of critical social science and David Priestly, who is head of psychology and personal development at Saracens Rugby Club. The group have attempted to explain the pressures young sportspeople experience and appeal for a more understanding environment in which they learn to cope with such issues. The latter states: “The examples of sportspeople from a range of sports who have all experienced real difficulty with anxiety, depression, and wellbeing, is a salutary reminder of the effects of high pressure in the world of sport-performance where they live most of their daily life.”Most sportspeople compete in intensely demanding and public environments where their work can define them as people, where they have to excel at early stages in life, live away from home, and have to manage high expectations, injuries, transformational sums of money, and the ‘fame machine’ at a relatively young age. ‘Living the dream’ they might be, but this accelerated development and intensity is out of synch with emotional development and normal rates of maturation.”

Two wickets changes outlook – Ford

Two quick wickets for Sri Lanka on the fourth morning would alter the Test’s outlook considerably, Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford said, after Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan stalled the visitors on day three.

Two quick wickets for Sri Lanka on the fourth morning would alter the Test’s outlook considerably, Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford said, after Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan stalled the visitors on day three.Misbah and Younis added an unbeaten fourth wicket stand of 113 but Sri Lanka still lead by 91 runs, with seven second-innings wicket to get.”Hopefully early tomorrow there will be a bit more in the wicket after the overnight freshness, and hopefully we can get something going our way,” Ford said. “If we can get two quick ones it’s a different game. Tomorrow morning’s first session is going to be a very, very big for both teams.”Pakistan bowled very well this morning. There were a couple of good deliveries early on that got our players out. That’s what we’ve got to strive for tomorrow morning, to get some good deliveries in place.”The partnership was Misbah and Younis’ ninth century-stand together in 29 innings. Younis finished the day unbeaten on 62 and Misbah had hit 53. The pair also frustrated Sri Lanka’s bowlers on day two of the first Test, amassing 218 together on that occasion..”They are players who have done these sorts of things on many occasions,” Ford said. “That obviously helps them in tough situations and pressure situations and they know they can get through them. There have been one or two younger fellows fairly new to Test cricket who have performed well in the Test match as well. It’s not really just down to experience. They are class players who have got down and done the job pretty well.”Ford also lauded Sri Lanka’s spirit after they had returned from a nine-month layoff from Test cricket to draw the first Test – despite conceding a 179-run deficit – and achieve a winning position in the second.”The one thing that I’ve said in many press conferences is that the group of players that I’ve been fortunate enough to work with are a very tough bunch mentally and have often fought back from tough positions. The first Test was an example when we were in trouble and bounced back well. They’ve started this Test well. They are a competitive bunch and they are mentally tough. Very often when things get tough they seem to show just how tough they are. That’s the make-up of the group.”Ford conceded Sri Lanka may also be short on bowling options with their present combination, after Tillakaratne Dilshan’s retirement. The XI features only five players who can bowl, and with Angelo Mathews reluctant to extend himself because of a sore Achilles tendon, the four frontline bowlers shared the entire 49-over workload.”We are perhaps a little short in the bowling. Dilshan always offered us an extra spinner when we played three quicks – we don’t have that luxury any more. Hopefully there is a bit of freshness tomorrow morning, something for the seamers, and we can make an impact. As the day goes on hopefully Rangana does his job as well. Unfortunately we don’t have any other options. We’ve got to get out and do the business with what we’ve got.”
