Tottenham can beat Dinamo and Arsenal

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt has backed his old side to overcome the challenge of Dinamo Zagreb before securing a positive result against Arsenal in the north London derby.

Jose Mourinho’s side take on the Croatian outfit in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie then follow that up with a trip to the Emirates to face their rivals in a big week for the club.

And Mabbutt, who rates the squad Mourinho has at disposal very highly, is confident they can pick up some good results.

Discussing the upcoming fixtures in an exclusive interview with FFC, Mabbutt said:

“Don’t even look at the form book at the moment.

“I would look at his players and the group of players and the way those players are playing as individuals and as a team, the confidence within the squad, the camaraderie within the squad, and I think we have all of those. So, you know, I’d be going into these games with confidence that we can get two positive results.”

Indeed, the north London club have certainly been performing of late after a difficult period, with Gareth Bale being one player who has really stepped up during this resurgence.

The Welshman was on fire in that recent 4-1 victory against Crystal Palace, managing to grab two goals for himself. And he was joined by a usual suspect in Harry Kane, who was also able to find the back of the net on two occasions.

If both players can carry this sort of form into the games against Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal, then there is a good chance that Mourinho will get the results he wants from these two important fixtures.

Everton at risk of losing Kean to Juventus

Everton are at risk of losing Moise Kean permanently in the summer transfer window as Le10sport have reported that Juventus are interested in signing him back.

As per the news outlet, the Italy international, currently on loan at Paris Saint Germain for the 2020/21 term, would be considered as a natural replacement for Paulo Dybala, who has not yet signed a new deal at the Serie A giants.

Everton should sell Kean for the right price

The Goodison Park outfit should look to sell Kean if the right kind of offer comes in for him. The 21-year-old has excelled so far in the French capital this season, scoring no fewer than 15 goals in just 27 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

PSG hero Pauleta was full of praise for him in February, describing the striker as a ‘very talented’ player, and there is no doubt that he has showcased his talents for the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League finalists.

Despite his many plaudits so far in this campaign, Kean could not perform for the Merseyside club, scoring a mere four times in 37 matches in total across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The forward struggled to adapt to the English game, and maybe he is simply better suited elsewhere.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has quoted the potential price tag from Carlo Ancelotti’s team as no less than €45m (£38.8m), which would be a good chunk of money for the Toffees to earn which could then be reinvested into other parts of the squad.

Is Joao Moutinho good enough for Wolves?

When Joao Moutinho chose to come to Wolves in 2018, it raised a few eyebrows.

The Molineux outfit had just been promoted to the top-flight but that didn’t seem to matter for one of Portuguese football’s most consistent playmakers.

The bearded midfield general has been outstanding since signing for the Old Gold and has become one of Nuno Santo’s go-to men.

He has scored just two goals for Wolves but crucially, he has 21 assists in his two and a half years at Molineux. When you think of the word ‘consistent’, you usually associate it with the 34-year-old.

Normally, age has been no burden for Moutinho but unfortunately in 2020/21, it’s proving detrimental.

Wolves have now won just three of their last 13 matches in all competitions and their dismal form this campaign can be, in part, attributed to the abject performances of Moutinho.

It’s been hard to pick bones with the experienced performer in the past but this season, he’s been a passenger in Wolves’ midfield. It was no surprise that without him in the team in midweek, they looked a lot better.

Nuno’s men drew 0-0 with Chelsea in a solid display all-round but when he returned to the side on Saturday, they suffered another defeat – this time by a one-goal margin to Crystal Palace.

Moutinho was slow, he struggled to read the pace of the game and was given a torrid afternoon by the energetic Ebere Eze. His goal proved to be the difference between the two teams, but such was the vibrant counter-attacking nature of Palace, that Moutinho was dribbled past on four occasions.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-wolves-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Wolves news”]

That’s a rather horrific statistic, one that proved to be the worst of anyone on the Wolves team on Saturday. As a result, he was far from prolific in defensive situations. The Portugal international won only 37.5% of the duels he competed in, looking way off the pace in the middle of the park.

Writing at full-time, Birmingham Live reporter Alex Dicken said: “A surprise selection ahead of his compatriot Neves and didn’t really justify his recall. He didn’t take any risks with the ball and contributed to a passive Wolves performance.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Moutinho has let his team down in recent months. In fact, he’s pretty much been a passenger all season, failing to score or provide a single assist. His key passes per game this term are down 0.9 from last season, while he’s making more fouls per match in the Premier League this campaign.

In recent months, he has been especially poor. Against Everton, earlier this January, the former Monaco man won just 25% of his duels and versus another Merseyside outfit, Liverpool, he committed four fouls and won only 33.3% of the defensive battles he competed in. Nuno’s side consequently lost 4-0.

It’s clear that Moutinho is struggling and with Wolves needing a desperate improvement in their play, they require someone fresh and mobile in their midfield, not the Portuguese veteran.

Only last week, Tim Spiers revealed this could be his final campaign as a regular. On this evidence, The Athletic reporter isn’t wrong. With just a day of the window remaining and Wolves in such poor form, this whole situation is turning into a nightmare for the manager.

They were dreaming of European football this season, but partly due to Moutinho’s struggles, they currently sit in 14th place.

Norwich City: Webber must keep hold of Max Aarons

Norwich City defender Max Aarons is reportedly a transfer target for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich interested in securing a deal for the talented full-back.

What’s the word?

Norwich will reportedly hold out for a fee up to £35 million for the full-back, with the 21-year-old valued at £18 million according to Transfermarkt.

He has been an ever-present figure in the Norwich side and appeared in all 34 of the Canaries’ Championship fixtures to date this season.

He has found the net in a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday and claimed assists in the games against Reading, Middlesbrough and Rotherham United.

The stock of Aarons is rising all the time and Norwich legend Darren Huckerby described him as a “special player” with an “unbelievable future.”

It loks like Canaries Sporting Director Stuart Webber faces a battle to keep the talented youngster at Carrow Road.

Tie him down

Norwich are in a commanding position to secure an automatic return to the Premier League, and it is vital that they keep hold of a player with the quality of Aarons with the long-term future of the club in mind.

The full-back has just over three years left on his existing deal and it remains imperative to tie him down to a long-term contract.

Keeping players like Aarons would enable the Canaries to ditch their reputation as a yo-yo club and allow them to look to establish themselves in the top flight once they return.

The club has sold a host of academy graduates in recent years that includes the likes of James Maddison, Ben Godfrey and Jamal Lewis, but they may need to hold onto their up-and-coming stars to take them to the next level.

Canaries’ fans will be hoping that Aarons will go on to star in the Premier League for Norwich in the very near future.

Guardiola must axe Gabriel Jesus after another disappointing display

Manchester City celebrated Pep Guardiola’s 700th game in management with a 2-0 win against Fulham on Saturday afternoon but they could, and should, have scored more.

Gabriel Jesus was once again one of the main culprits in the Citizens side, with the Brazilian having managed just three goals in eight appearances so far this season.

Although the former Palmeiras man has averaged an impressive 7.42 rating across his five appearances in the top-flight so far this campaign, he must work on becoming more clinical if he wants to keep his place in Guardiola’s side in the long-term.

Of course, there is a lot of pressure on the 23-year-old’s shoulders, with many touting him to the man to replace Sergio Aguero in City’s side, with the Argentinian, who has 255 City goals to his name, looking likely to depart the club at the end of this season when his contract expires.

However, with Jesus having contributed 71 goals in 161 appearances thus far, it can definitely be argued that he needs to improve his goalscoring ability if he ever wants to reach the levels achieved by Aguero with the Citizens.

After all, Jesus has never scored more than 15 goals in a single Premier League season, whilst Aguero has done it on eight occasions in his City career.

City’s game against Fulham on Saturday perhaps summed Jesus up, as, despite City’s domination against Scott Parker’s side, the striker, who earns £90k per week at City, failed to register a single shot during the game.

Perhaps it is a simple matter of the Brazilian learning to become more selfish, as in his City career he has tallied up 31 assists, which leaves you wondering how many of those he could have scored himself.

Back in 2019, Guardiola was full of praise for the striker after he grabbed a Champions League hat-trick against Dinamo Zagreb, saying:

“We are incredibly delighted with Gabby,” Guardiola added. “A striker needs goals and he scored three. Hopefully, it can help his mood to be incredibly positive.

“Gabriel is an incredible fighter, how he helps us to defend and does absolutely everything, but a striker needs goals and that is important for him, for the team, for everything.” (per 90 min)

That was the Brazilian’s third hat-trick in a City shirt, with the other two coming against Shakhtar Donetsk and Burton Albion, who are not exactly the strongest of opposition. Therefore, it can definitely be argued that Jesus needs to work on being more clinical, especially in the Premier League.

Until he improves his goalscoring ability, Guardiola should consider dropping him from his first-team as although it didn’t have too much impact on the overall result against Fulham, City’s 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur recently demonstrates what can happen if you don’t take your chances.

Manchester United: Fans react to Darren Fletcher comments on Jadon Sancho

Many associated with Manchester United have been very vocal about the club as of late, and former player Darren Fletcher has been discussing the possible transfer of Jadon Sancho – he believes the club don’t have to rush to acquire the player and that they shouldn’t sign a second choice.

The Englishman has made 101 appearances for the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, registering 80 goal contributions as he has scored 35 times and supplied 45 assists, per Transfermarkt.

Speaking about the winger, according to MEN, via utdreport, Fletcher said: “If that’s your main target, why not wait for him instead of signing a stop-gap and eventually losing out on Sancho?”

It’s safe to say that these comments have not gone down well with a lot of the United fan base, as the club have only signed one player this window and many supporters believe they need more big additions if they want to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City, which is understandable as Liverpool finished 33 points above them last season.
