The Chalkboard: Emery must solve Iwobi problem before end of season

[ad_pod ]

Unai Emery is not using Alex Iwobi properly.

The Arsenal winger endured a quiet game against Newcastle United on Monday evening as the Gunners won 2-0.

On the chalkboard

Iwobi is a versatile winger but was deployed almost as an attacking midfielder against the Magpies, alongside Mesut Ozil and behind striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The Nigeria international has mainly been deployed on the left wing this season and has scored five goals in all competitions, while laying on seven assists.

But he was wasted as an attacking midfielder on Monday evening in a game that the Gunners dominated.

Iwobi touched the ball a total of 57 times, per WhoScored, and attempted 49 total passes, of which 42 were successful.

He did not make a key pass, nor did he complete a dribble, despite attempting three.

Iwobi did take one accurate corner but was substituted just after the hour-mark, making way for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Quite simply, Emery’s system left Iwobi struggling on Monday.

A puzzle for Emery to solve

Where exactly should Iwobi play?

He does not really have the searing pace to make too much of an impact on the flank, but he was routinely crowded out in the centre.

Emery could choose to deploy the 22-year-old in a deeper-lying midfield role but he has played in central midfield just once for the club, in a 17-minute cameo against Southampton in 2017.

With Mesut Ozil seemingly returning to form and Henrikh Mkhitaryan back to full fitness, it is a difficult conundrum for Emery to find his way around.

As it is, it does not appear that Iwobi fits into the team at all.

Derby County fans were informed about the club’s financial results from the 2017/2018 season on Tuesday and those on Twitter are absolutely delighted with them.

Rams lapped up the news as it was confirmed that Derby had made £14.6 million in profits during the year, a drastic improvement on the £7.9 million loss of the previous campaign.

The sale of Pride Park to a separate company headed by County owner Mel Morris was the real catalyst for this gain after a worrying period of financial instability for the club.

Things are looking up for the side on the pitch as well as they are in the play-off places, chasing a return to the Premier League under Frank Lampard.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

But it’s just off-the-pitch matters that supporters are concerned with at this second, with many rejoicing at the announcement and comments such as “we’re not going bust” and “Mel Morris is a true Rams legend” being thrown around Twitter.

Man Utd fans discuss Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s impressive display in Milan derby

As the saying goes, form is temporary, class is permanent.

And that really is the case with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede has proven himself to be one of the greatest goal-scorers of this generation, with 459 strikes in just 747 games in his entire career.

But following a cruciate knee-ligament damage suffered whilst he was at Manchester United, there may have been concerns that the end was near in terms of him calling it quits.

Instead, the ever-green 38-year-old continues to defy logic with his performances, and has started life at Milan incredibly well. Despite being on the wrong end of a derby day defeat to Inter on Sunday, Ibrahimovic scored one and made one.

And after watching his performance, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the man who scored 29 goals for them in his time at the club.

A couple of fans suggested they would have loved to have seen Ibrahimovic back in United colours rather than turning out for Milan.

Another United supporter meanwhile simply admitted they let him go too early, and wondered what what would have happened if he hadn’t suffered his injury.

Should United have kept Ibrahimovic instead of allowing him to walk away?

Knowing how things have panned out since, perhaps the Red Devils would have ensured the Swede stayed put at Old Trafford. After all, having sold Romelu Lukaku without signing a replacement, the Manchester side scrambled around on deadline day trying to find a striker, eventually settling on Odion Ighalo on loan.

Mourinho’s produced some incredible footballing stars – how much do you know about them?

Surely Ibrahimovic would be able to do a better job than Ighalo? As it is, the veteran forward is continuing to do the business elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Man Utd ace Daniel James delivers an exciting verdict on Bruno Fernandes.

Every Premier League Club's Most Expensive Player Sale

January can be a difficult market for buying and selling players, purely because clubs done’t want to let go of their best players midway through a season while a lot of managers want to do all they can to improve their current crop of players.

This January doesn’t’ seem to be much different, with two Premier League clubs in particular slapping huge price-tags on their most wanted players.

West Ham have told clubs in China it’ll cost at least £45million to prise Marko Arnautovic away from Stratford while Bournemouth have insisted it will take a bid of around £75m to convince them to sell Callum Wilson.

If they managed to get those fees then they’ll represent club record player sales for both sides. But what about the rest of the Premier League? What would it take for other clubs to break their current record player sale?

Surely most of these will be broken very, very soon…

20. Brighton – Leonardo Ulloa – £9.09m

The Argentina is perhaps more known for his time at Leicester but before then he was a force in front of goal for Brighton.

Arriving for just £2m from Almeria in January 2013, Ulloa netted 23 goals in 50 league appearances for the Seagulls before Leicester came calling and made Brighton a huge profit by signing him for just over £9m 18 months later.

19. Cardiff City – Steven Caulker – £9.68m

Believe or not, there was a time when Steven Caulker was one of the most sought after English defenders playing in the Premier League.

It didn’t quite work out how everyone expected for him but having enjoyed an impressive season in the top-flight with Cardiff, after signing from Spurs in July 2013, he was sold to QPR just a year later for just short of £10m – which remains Cardiff’s most profitable player sale to date.

18. Huddersfield – Tom Ince – £10.08m

Another Englshman who has struggled to live up to expectation, Tom Ince joined newly promoted Huddersfield Town from Derby County in July 2017.

But just a year later, despite helping Huddersfield to Premier League safety, he was sold to relegated Stoke City for just over £10m, where he is hardly setting the Championship alight.

17. Bournemouth – Matt Ritchie – £10.80m

The Scotland international was instrumental in Bournemouth’s first ever season in England’s top-flight.

So it was a huge shock when they agreed to sell him to relegated Newcastle in July 2016 for £10.80m. At the time it seemed like a real bargain but it remains Bournemouth’s club-record player sale.

16. Wolves – Steven Fletcher – £13.68m

This probably won’t stand for much long, given the amount of top talent currently playing in the Premier League for Wolves, but as things stand Steven Fletcher’s £13.68m switch to Sunderland in August 2012 remains Wolves biggest player sale ever.

Not a bad coup for Sunderland at the time given Fletcher’s record of 22 goals in 61 league appearances for Wolves.

15. Fulham – Mousa Dembele – £17.10m

This will go down as one of the biggest bargains in Premier League history, as the Belgium international moved from West to North London in a £17.1m deal back in August 2010.

He went on to make almost 250 appearances in all competitions for Spurs over six-and-a-half seasons. Surely though, at some point, selling Ryan Sessegnon will break Fulham’s current record breaking player sale?

14. Burnley – Michael Keane – £25.65m

The former Man United academy graduate made a loan move to Burnley permanent in January 2015.

Two-and-a-half years later, in July 2017, he was sold to Everton for a club record player sale – £25..65m.

13. Crystal Palace – Yannick Bolasie – £26.01m

Another player who Everton splashed big money on, Bolasie spent four seasons at Selhurst park before making the £26.01m switch to the Blue half of Merseyside.

You’d like to think Wilfried Zaha and perhaps even Aaron Wan-Bissaka will eventually fetch more for Palace in today’s transfer market, though.

12. West Ham – Dimitri Payet – £26.37m

The Frenchman will go down as one of the bargains of the Premier League era, having signed from Marseille for just over £10m in June 2015.

Having almost fired the Hammers in to the Premier League he then forced his way back to Marseille by downing tools in East London in January 2017, and the French club bought their man back for more than double what they sold him at.

The potential sale of Arnautovic to China, though, will eclipse this current club record sale at West Ham.

Liverpool interested in Chilwell and Lewis as possible Moreno replacements, fans react

[ad_pod ]

It will be no surprise if Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno leaves the club at the end of the season.

The Spaniard is out of contract next summer and has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield.

According to The Mirror, 21-year-old Ben Chilwell is a target for the Reds after impressing at Leicester City.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also keen on bringing through youth player Adam Lewis, who has been putting in positive displays in the academy ranks.

At the moment, Andrew Robertson is the first-choice left-back at Anfield and it does not look as though that will change any time soon.

The Scotland international has been a stellar addition to Klopp’s team since his arrival from Hull City in 2017.

However, if Moreno does end up leaving then Liverpool will have to recruit a new back-up.

On Reddit, some supporters have been discussing whether Chilwell and Lewis are decent and realistic replacements.

Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.Comment from discussion Moreno doesn’t want to renew his contract after losing his place, but LFC will keep him until the summer, where they hope to line up a replacement, with Ben Chilwell a long term target, and Klopp a big admirer of the left back, but Klopp also likes Adam Lewis.

Joe Hart and Burnley are a match made in heaven

Burnley’s first European game in 51 years ended in a draw.

The Clarets earned a place in the Europa League qualifying rounds thanks to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League. Burnley travelled to Scotland to face Aberdeen in the first-leg. A late goal from Sam Vokes gave Sean Dyche a 1-1 draw to take home to Turf Moor.

Despite the result, a serious injury to goalkeeper Nick Pope overshadowed the occasion. The Englishman immediately sought assistance after a collision in the tenth minute and was later taken to hospital with a shoulder problem. With Tom Heaton also sidelined, Dyche may be forced into the transfer market for a new ‘keeper.

The solution to his problem could be Manchester City outcast – Joe Hart. Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the former England international spent last season on loan at West Ham where he made 19 appearances. Behind Ederson and Claudio Bravo in the pecking order, he will be allowed to leave the club this summer.

With his career stuttering in recent years, Hart would jump at the chance of a fresh start at Turf Moor. The 31-year-old remains a decent shot stopper and represents an upgrade on Anders Lindegaard. Hart has a point to prove, and Burnley could be the side to benefit.

The former Birmingham stopper has just one-year remaining on his contract so the Clarets would be able to pick up him on the cheap. If Pope is sidelined for the foreseeable future, this might be a move Dyche simply has to make.
