West Ham confirm Arnautovic departure… too little, too late

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United have confirmed that Marko Arnautovic has completed his transfer to Shanghai SIPG.

What’s the word?

Arnautovic requested last week that a bid for him from the Chinese club be accepted, per Football FanCast sources.

That offer totalled around £19.7m and was rejected, with the club viewing it as derisory.

However, a new bid was tabled of £22.5m over the last few days and, after the go-ahead from manager Manuel Pellegrini, per sources, the Hammers have done business.

One figure within the club confirmed to FFC that the club were aware of how poor the finances of the deal were but that, due to the Austria international’s behaviour, they wanted him gone.

The Irons confirmed the news in a particularly frosty statement, saying: “West Ham United can confirm that Marko Arnautovic has joined Chinese Super League champions Shanghai SIPG for an undisclosed fee.

“The 30-year-old Austrian departs after two seasons at London Stadium, during which he scored 22 goals in 65 appearances in Claret and Blue.”

A delayed decision

West Ham have made completely the right decision here but it may well have come six months too late.

Indeed, FFC reported in January that the club had rejected a £30m bid for the striker and they have now been forced to take a major hit on that valuation.

Nevertheless, the move is the right one; it is the second time Arnautovic has asked to leave the club and a club simply cannot keep a player who appears to actively poison the first-team as he does.

Shifting him out of the club, for a fee that can be reinvested, was always going to be the right move.

If only the Hammers had come to their senses in January.

How Ethan Ampadu can benefit Aston Villa’s reading of the game

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Aston Villa have done some particularly shrewd work in exploiting the loan market in the past year.

Signing Axel Tuanzebe and Anwar El Ghazi on loan last season, Dean Smith also added Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause to his squad on a temporary basis over the winter.

But they’re once again targeting another loan deal. Per The Guardian, they have an interest in Chelsea teenager Ethan Ampadu.

The Welshman was rarely afforded much game time last season, featuring just three times in the Europa League as he had to settle for a solitary start.

It was a disappointing campaign for the defensive-minded player but he could be set for a new lease of life on loan at the Villans.

On the chalkboard

Despite being the tender age of just 18, Ampadu is someone who plays like an individual beyond his years. He’s intelligent on the ball and calm in possession, boasting a pass success of 87.9%.

Yet, it’s his defensive contribution that can benefit Villa most next season if he joins.

Whether that be as a centre back or as a holding midfield player, two roles he’s featured in for the Blues, his reading of the game is exceptional and his ability to step out and intercept the play is impressive for someone so young.

In the Europa League he made 1.7 interceptions per game in 2018/19 whilst for Wales in the Nations League, that went up to 2.7 per match, completing eight interceptions in three outings.

If you compare that to the current Villa squad then his record at international level is streets ahead of anyone else in the side.

Mile Jedinak was top of their charts making 1.7, but he’s now been released. However, in terms of those who started regularly, Mings had the best stats with 1.2 interceptions on average per 90 minutes.

If Villa are looking for someone who can offer more protection then Ampadu could prove to be game-changing.

Despite still being incredibly inexperienced, his ability to break up the play could be crucial for a newly promoted team who quite possibly won’t see as much of the ball next term.

Having lost Jedinak and Glenn Whelan, you sense as though Villa will need to find someone capable of doing a similar job to make up for their departures. Ampadu could well be their answer.

Pundit View: Prutton’s view on why Leeds should sign Kent is ridiculous

[ad_pod ]

David Prutton’s most recent article in the Yorkshire Post sees him give an absolutely ridiculous reason as to why Leeds should sign Ryan Kent on loan from Liverpool next season.

What’s been said then?

The former midfielder wrote that Kent should be signed due to the performances his Liverpool teammate Harry Wilson put in for Derby last season.

“I don’t know too much about the kid Kent but you only have to look at the other Liverpool loanee in the Championship last season in Harry Wilson who did wonderfully well at Derby,” Prutton wrote.

“I’m not saying it’s an exact science but Kent will have worked under Jurgen Klopp, under Lee Johnson on loan at Bristol City and most recently under Steven Gerrard at Rangers and that’s three very good coaches.

“Kent is surely a player that would benefit from being under Bielsa and if he’s anything like Wilson then he would be a great addition.”

Makes no sense

Prutton does say that it isn’t an exact science, but that isn’t enough to justify such a mind-boggling opinion.

This argument that Kent should be signed because Wilson did well is so easily unravelled it’s laughable.

It would be a partially decent point if Liverpool had an excellent track record with their loanees in the Championship, but they don’t.

Ben Woodburn and Ovie Ejaria spent parts of last season in the second tier and made next to no impact, while previous seasons have seen Sheyi Ojo and even Kent himself flop in this division.

Wilson is very much the exception to the rule here, and his performances at Hull before he joined Derby indicated that he would be brilliant in this division. Indeed, the winger has had a good season at Rangers, but his previous stints in the Championship have been less than impressive.

Manchester City’s social media team cause a storm on Twitter

[ad_pod ]On Friday afternoon, Manchester City’s official Twitter account posted a tweet reminding their fans of Frank Lampard’s last goal for the club back in 2014 on the 24th of May.The tweet describes Lampard as a ‘City legend’ in a tongue-in-cheek way, but Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law did not pick up on the joke.

Credit to him, though, he quickly realised he had missed the point and taken the bait from City’s Twitter account.

Lampard spent one season at City, and though it was quite successful as he scored eight goals in 38 appearances, the term legend cannot be applied to his spell in Manchester.

Matt Law was not the only person to bite, however, as numerous people on Twitter responded with the same sort of puzzlement.

The endeavours of the social media team at Man City to wind up Chelsea fans clearly worked. Law, who covers Chelsea on a regular basis for the Daily Telegraph, was one of many to express bemusement at the tweet.

Perhaps the team behind the tweet are looking to get their kicks from Twitter in the absence of title-winning football to gloat about.

Either way, they managed to catch out plenty of social media users including the well-respected journalist.

Lampard himself probably had a chuckle as he prepares to try and take Derby County back up to the Premier League on Monday.

James Benge reveals Arsenal’s expected summer transfer budget, Gunners fans react

[ad_pod ]

Football.London’s Arsenal correspondent James Benge has revealed what he believes the north London outfit’s budget will be this summer with and without Champions League football, and Gunners fans have been quick to react on Twitter.

Unai Emery’s side are in real danger of missing out on a top-four finish in the Premier League following a dreadful run of recent form that has seen them lose three consecutive top-flight fixtures.

It is getting to a point where winning the Europa League may well be their best chance of appearing in Europe’s elite club competition again next term, considering they are in the semi-finals.

Benge believes that the Spanish manager will have less than £50m to spend should Arsenal miss out, but around £70m should they make their long-awaited Champions League return – all before player sales.

Gunners supporters have been quick to reply to the story via the afcstuff fan account on Twitter, and it’s fair to say that they are fuming.

One fan is happy (but very confused) after Wolves beat Arsenal in the video below…

While one said “with £50m it will be a miracle if we make top 6 next year”, another simply said “Kroenke out” to show how they are feeling right now.

It isn’t an enjoyable time to be a fan of the team from the capital as the moment, but Europa League success may change that.

Here is just a selection of the reaction…

Opinion: Everton fans should be very worried if they sign Kieran Trippier

[ad_pod ]

Everton are reportedly eyeing a deal for Kieran Trippier, but the Toffees would be repeating a grave error by signing the Tottenham right-back.

What’s the story?

According to The Daily Mail, Everton are eyeing a £20m swoop for Trippier, with the north Londoners expected to pursue Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.

The arrival of Wan-Bissaka would effectively end Trippier’s time as a starter for the Lilywhites, and the report claims the Toffees are ready to offer him a way out.

Seamus Coleman has not been at his best for quite some time now, but Trippier is hardly even an upgrade.

Not even an upgrade

The first mistake the Toffees would be making is assuming Trippier is actually better than Coleman, because they both present the exact same problem.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Both full-backs are excellent in attacking positions, but lack the engine, positional awareness and speed to fulfil those attacking requirements without sacrificing defensive responsibilities.

Coleman is just not athletic enough anymore to bomb up and down the wing for 90 minutes, as is required from modern full-backs, so why pursue another player with the exact same issue?

Brands repeating the old guard’s mistakes

This move should also worry Everton fans as regards to the operations off the pitch, as it shows a complete lack of understanding of past mistakes.

Believe it or not, the Toffees actually have a bigger net spend since the 2014 summer transfer window than arch-rivals Liverpool, and most of their signings have underwhelmed.

Splashing out £20m on a 28 year-old who is getting progressively worse rather than better would be yet another incredibly short-sighted move from the club.

If these are the types of signings Marcel Brands intends to make, he may not be the transfer guru fans hoped he was after all.
