Danny Rose: West Brom can finally replace Nathan Ferguson

West Brom could be about to bolster their defence, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

The Baggies are thought to be keen on signing Danny Rose this January transfer window, claims talkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook, who told the ‘White and Jordan‘ show on Wednesday:

“I was told there was a big chance he could follow Jack Wilshere in the sense that Tottenham could cancel his contract in this window.

“We know he’s not part of Jose Mourinho’s plans.

“West Brom and Sam Allardyce would be very keen to take him to the Hawthorns.”

Ferguson successor

If Spurs do indeed cancel the 30-year-old’s reported £65k-per-week contract, then Big Sam is right to target his signature this window as he’d be a huge addition to help boost Albion’s survival chances.

Not at least because he’s vastly-experienced at this level – and top-flight experience is something that this current Albion squad lacks in abundance. Indeed, Rose has racked up 214 appearances for Spurs, also featuring in both European competitions.

It is only really Branislav Ivanovic, who is ageing rapidly at centre-back at 36, and perhaps Kieran Gibbs, who can match such a feat – though the latter even appears to be on the chopping block this month.

According to The Athletic’s Steve Madeley, the Baggies will be in the market for a new left-back should they be able to move the former Gunners man on as Allardyce was left angry with his injury withdrawal prior to the Leeds match last month.

Without Gibbs, West Brom are short on options in the role as Conor Townsend is currently out through injury – evidently, they haven’t been able to replace the versatile Nathan Ferguson, who swapped the Hawthorns for Crystal Palace in the summer.

The young academy graduate stepped up to play left-back in 12 of 21 appearances last term as Gibbs’ own injury problems tormented his season – another reason why the Midlands outfit should definitely be looking to move him on.

He’s started only 19 games in the past 18 months, which is near enough just one game per month, as per WhoScored.

By adding Rose, Big Sam can solve his conundrum and at the same time, finally replace the void left behind by Ferguson.

It was a travesty that no one was brought in during the summer window to fill the void. As Marlon Harewood told Football FanCast back in November, Rose is a “top player” who “can do a job.”

Big Sam would be wise to sign him if given the chance.

Jairo Riedewald steals the show as Crystal Palace battle to draw with Brighton

It finished all square at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace battled to a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the first A23 derby of the Premier League season.

Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha scored his seventh goal against Brighton, the most he has scored against any opponent before Lewis Dunk received a red card in extra time after a reckless challenge on Gary Cahill, but one player stood out from the rest: Jairo Riedewald.

Much has been made of the 3-cap Dutch international’s time at Selhurst Park, as it is fair to say that he has struggled for consistency so far, as he averaged fewer than one tackle per game in the top flight last term, via WhoScored.

It seems like he played like he had a point to prove in an attempt to try and silence the critics – and boy, did he deliver.

Per SofaScore, the 24-year-old completed a staggering 23 out of 24 passes (96%), whilst he also won four out of seven ground duels, and made two tackles, four clearances, one interception and blocked one shot. Tellingly, he only lost possession five times, unlike Michy Batshuayi.

Playing in the middle of the pitch, the versatile player even picked out the perfect pass to send the Belgian striker through, only for his teammate to be flagged offside, which was checked by VAR.

The Dutchman demonstrated that not only is he capable of putting in a defensive shift but he can also be a useful asset in attack if and when required. It’s just a shame that Batshuayi was leaning offside when the ball was played, but the least said about that, the better.

Sky Sports awarded Riedewald with a high rating of 7/10, whilst football.london went one step further and gave him a grade of 8/10, claiming he “looked at home in the Premier League on his first start of the season, his passing and movement with the ball helping him out of some tight spots.”

It’s hard to argue otherwise at the very least, as Riedewald was perhaps unfortunate to miss out on the Man of the Match award, which went to Brighton striker Neal Maupay instead.

However, Hodgson will have been buoyed by his performance, especially when you consider the fact that James McCarthy picked up a hamstring injury whilst away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

The Palace boss has had plenty of faith in Riedewald’s ability on the pitch in the past, so it’s about time he was given a chance to build upon this impressive display.

West Ham fans react to transfer interest in Juventus’ Daniele Rugani

With a move for Burnley’s James Tarkowski seemingly all but collapsed, it’s no surprise to see West Ham in the market for another central defender before the end of the transfer window early next month.

According to Sportitalia (via Football Italia), the Hammers are in talks to sign Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani, and that whilst he has also been linked with a move to the likes of Fulham, Rennes and Sevilla, it’s David Moyes’ side who are in active negotiations for the Italy international.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report adds that the Bianconeri are demanding a fee in the region of €18-20m (£16.4-18.2m), and that instead of agreeing to a loan move, they want to let him go permanently in order to help their finances.

And after hearing about the reports of a move for Rugani, West Ham fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Hammers fans meanwhile pointed to how Angelo Ogbonna followed a similar path from Juventus to West Ham, and has since “worked out pretty well”.

With 62 goals conceded last season in the Premier League (only the teams that finished below them let in more), a new centre-back at the London Stadium has to be a priority before the close of the window.

Moyes has got numerous players further forward who of course need to start clicking in front of goal, but without a more resilient back-line, it will be another tough season ahead for the Hammers.

A move for Rugani would be a step in the right direction.

Aston Villa ace John McGinn outshone Jack Grealish in Scotland masterclass

With Aston Villa’s man of the hour Jack Grealish making a well-deserved start for England on Thursday night, fans of the Midlands side may not have been paying too close of an attention on how John McGinn was faring north of the border.

The midfielder was lining up for Scotland in a crucial play-off game in the race to qualify for the European Championships next summer, with the Tartan Army’s clash against Israel going all the way to the wire and into penalties.

And whilst Grealish may be the one to pick up all the headlines on Friday morning, McGinn arguably outshone his Villa teammate with a man of the match display in his country’s shoot-out victory.

Despite not getting on the score-sheet, the 25-year-old helped lead the charge for Steve Clarke’s side, playing in a number ten role just behind Oliver McBurnie and Lyndon Dykes.

Even though he played the full 120 minutes, McGinn was a bundle of energy all throughout, and was a constant danger for the Israeli defence with his ability to get in and around the box and fire away shots – his four attempts on goal were the most of any Scot.

As well as trying to find a breakthrough himself, the Villa ace showed his more creative side too, providing two key passes and boasting an impressive 91% passing accuracy.

Then, when the shoot-out came around, McGinn proved his nerves of steel by stepping up to take the first penalty, which he emphatically dispatched.

Whilst Grealish picked up his own man of the match award for England, it does come with the slight caveat that it was in a friendly game. McGinn’s performance on the other hand was in a pressure-cooker elimination game.

Dean Smith would surely have been left raving at his Scottish dynamo’s magic display.

And in other news, this Villa summer signing could spell bad news for Dean Smith favourite.

Rangers fans rave about Leon Balogun’s debut against Aberdeen

Rangers kicked off the new season in style as they ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Aberdeen on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard’s side took home all three points thanks to a first-half strike from Ryan Kent, and earned an impressive clean sheet in large part down to Leon Balogun.

The 32-year-old made his debut for the Gers after joining the club from Wigan earlier this summer, and looked every inch a smart signing by Ross Wilson and co.

Are you a massive Rangers fan? Know everything about the club? Well do you know your Gary Stevens from your Michael Ball? This quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He won 100% of the duels that he contested (three on the ground and six in the air), made three clearances and blocked one shot too – and that’s not to mention him clattering head-first into the post too.

And after seeing his display, Rangers fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Rangers fans thought Balogun’s performance reminded them of former powerhouse Madjid Bougherra.

Another Rangers supporter seemed to be even more impressed with the defender, even calling for him to be given the captain’s armband.

If his debut is anything to go by, then Rangers might have made one of the smartest signings of the summer.

Having been thrown into the deep end away at Pittodrie, Balogun dealt with everything with superbly, not shirking a challenge and putting his head where it hurts – quite literally at times too when he knocked into that post.

Gerrard will have been delighted by his centre-back’s commanding performance.

Manchester United: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are world-class

Manchester United bounced back from a well-earned draw away to Tottenham with a 3-0 thrashing of Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba returned to the starting lineup after a lengthy absence and proved pivotal as Man United ran riot over the Blades.

His teammate Marcus Rashford succumbed to a back injury in January but started both games, having a hand in two of Anthony Martial’s goals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted the Red Devils duo are a couple of the “world-class players” at his disposal.

Solskjaer recently made the headlines after claiming David de Gea is still the best goalkeeper in the world, despite making several high-profile mistakes.

Writing in the matchday programme, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News, the club legend noted “With so many players back fit now, everybody can see the quality we have in our ranks.

“The players who came on at Spurs made a difference, which shows you the level of competition we’ve got in the squad now.

“Even before lockdown we were on a strong run of form. Now we’re able to call upon world-class players like Paul and Marcus returning from injury.

“Paul could tell you more than most about our evolution, because the team he’s re-joining now is a different team to the one that started the season. Our development is there for all to see.”

It is hard to argue with Solskjaer here, as Pogba and Rashford are two of United’s biggest attacking threats.

Indeed, Rashford is the club’s top scorer this season, scoring 19 goals and creating 7 assists in all competitions so far.

The French World Cup winner, who has been linked with a move away from the Theatre of Dreams, has made a full recovery, and although he has only managed 628 minutes of Premier League action up until now, has averaging 2.2 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

Earlier this month, January signing Bruno Fernandes admitted it would be “amazing” to play with Pogba when football returns.

Fernandes’ arrival coincided with the Frenchman’s rehabilitation, but the pair have shown glimpses of a formidable partnership in the making, as Pogba won the penalty that the Portuguese converted to equalise at Spurs.

To all intents and purposes, Solskjaer is in possession of a wealth of attacking talent, and his players will need to prove their worth if they are to reach the top four by the end of the season.
